I know a lot of people think that kindle vs iPad is a weird comparison but this helps me so much! I’ve been wanting to get a kindle PW since I’ve gotten back into reading but I constantly use my IPad mini to read my Kindle books but also my Apple Books and also use reading apps to track what I’ve read and my reviews! Of course the blue screen isn’t so comfortable and neither is the size which is exactly why I’d like to get a PW but (even in these comments) I see others complain about the lagging while bringing up a book or turning a page which seems kind of useless when your being engaged in a book. So in the mean time till they are able to clearly fix the PW I’ll just stick to my mini for now :)

There's no lag in turning the pages. It might not be instant quick, but it's not a lag. It's certainly quicker than turning a page on a book. :). There are lags opening up a book or paging through your library. But seriously that's nothing of a price to pay for a reading experience that is so much closer to reading a book than an electronic device. A tablet like the mini (which is very nice device) is also distracting. Ever since I got a Kindle, I've read so much more books than I ever had with the tablets or phone or computers.

I agree this was a helpful video. I've had my iPad mini for a little over a year now, and I use it for EVERYTHING. I also have one of the older Kindle Paperwhites I recently dug out and used a little because I felt bad it was just sitting there! I've been reading books on my mini the whole time I've had it and not had any complaints. When you compare the features, Kindle does seem to win if you are ONLY reading and ONLY using Amazon books but I also use Apple books and Cloud Library and Hoopla from my library. With my iPad changing between those apps is no big deal. Thanks for making the decision easy...I will NOT be upgrading my Kindle paperwhite...in fact I'm going to rehome my older model to a family member.

To compare these devices head to head as the title of this video infers is an apples and oranges comparison (no pun intended). The two devices do not have the same audience in mind. If you want a tablet, get the tablet that makes the most sense for you (iOS, Android, or perhaps even an Amazon Fire). The beauty of the new Kindle Paperwhite (2021) is the form factor, the ease of readability in almost any location, the ability to read without blue-light eye strain, etc. And let's be clear, these aren't novel innovations from previous generations of the Paperwhite. Rather, these are just significant improvements. If you are pondering a Kindle of any sort, certain assumptions can likely be made upfront -- the most important of which being that you're already in the Amazon kindle book ecosystem or want to be in it and don't have content in other places. Here's the reality. If you are a serious reader who likes the convenience of not carrying books around, are already in the Amazon Kindle ecosystem for books, and want to be able to read anywhere, distraction-free, without battery or glare anxiety, then the 2021 Paperwhite may be an excellent upgrade for you. If you want a tablet that has the ability to read from multiple different book sources but may not be the best reader in all conditions but has other functionality, get the tablet. Or, you might opt for both. But again to view this video as a head-to-head comparison does neither device justice. They both CAN function as eReaders and give a great experience, the question is which experience is more important to you the consumer. The review **is fair and accurate** but the title is misleading as these devices are both excellent in their abilities but also have vastly different intended user bases.

I have been using first an iPad Mini, then an iPad Air, and latest an iPad Pro 11” for reading and studying. Two months ago I passed over my iPad Pro to my kid and got a Kindle Paperwhite 6.8”. I read 5 times more books than before - and I mostly read mathematical and statistical textbooks… the key reasons why a Kindle is better for me, are the better screen experience, and also the always-with-me form factor. I can still highlight texts on the Kindle, although I cannot scribble on the books any more, and also, reading PDFs are not so good (but also not so bad). My eyes appreciate the reading experience.

Have had an older Paperwhite for years, have a mini 5 and bought a new PW thinking surely they would have fixed the abysmally slow frustrating software. Nope-I like the size/weight but don’t like the nighttime dark theme for in bed reading-terrible, and just gave up and went back to my Mini 5 for in bed reading. I read a LOT-have tons of books on both my Kindle and my Ipads (or in cloud)- sometimes use my 12.9 to read also so have books downloaded to all devices, including phone. My Kindle app on Ipads knows my Amazon account also and gives me choice to which device I want downloaded-the major plus for the Kindle for me was size/weight (very occasionally outside reading but normally read under roof outside so not a problem) but I can’t read newspapers, other reading sources, no illustrations. Having both I can use both-but I tend to pick up the Mini much more often than the Paperwhite.

True. Biggest DOWNSIDES of iPad reading: -Weight -Sun glare -Distractions/Temptations from other apps Biggest UPSIDES of iPad reading: -Highlighting text is far superior than the Kindle -The screen ignores thumbs/inadvertent touches, whereas the Kindle will page turn if your skin even grazes the screen. This makes holding a Kindle a chore (which is why I put a PopSocket on the back of mine).

I'm not even much of a book reader, although that is about to change, and I know that book readers would not choose the tablet over the dedicated e-reader for just reading. They would only pick the tablet if they have to use it for something else, like for work or for school or something. Many book readers are still fighting about paperback vs hardback and physical books vs eBooks, so when it comes to the whole Kindle vs iPad debate, it is usually something only tech journalists cover, and many of them prefer the iPad/tablets because of their uses outside of reading. The thing is though, iPads have a lot of distractions. A lot of readers just want to read without being distracted, and a Kindle is just as good as a physical book in that regard, providing no distractions from the book you are reading. I've done a lot of research into buying my new Kindle for myself and most readers only use a phone or tablet to read for convenience, but they will more often than not take their Kindle everywhere with them because it doesn't add much weight to what they have to carry, it's a better experience for reading anywhere and is distraction free.

Been using my iPad for reading...but decided to dig out my super old Kindle Paperwhite. They both have their positives...one major thing I love about the ipad is how easy it is to look words up I don't understand. I'm re-reading the Game Of Thrones series and I'm constantly highlighting names and doing google searches directly from the book to find photos from the tv show of the person so I get a better idea of who they are...and I obviously can't do that on my Kindle. However...I find I'm reading a whole heck of a lot more now that I brought my Kindle back out. It just feels better to me. It's easier on my eyes and it's far more compact than my iPad (using an 11").

They make it look like night and day size difference, the actual primitre of the tablet it’s only about half inch difference bigger on the new model but they did a good job in making the screen bigger, so it would fit just as good. And it’s not heavy by much because it’s only they made an half inch difference on the dimension and they used every available space within the tablet to make the screen bigger so you will notice the screen difference good job.

Slow software on the Kindle and abysmal dark mode screen (black background with white letters, which pin kindle is actually gray background) are two of the main reason why I read mainly on my iPhone and soon on a iPad mini. Add to that the fact that I can write up reviews in notes and access Goodreads and multiple reading apps right from the ipad or iPhone makes them the much better reading device for me. Even for night reading (black background, white letters, and turn brightness way down) is far better and clearer than on the kindle.

Sure, kindle is cheaper and has a better display for reading, but iPad mini has more content sources, a larger number of books and audiobooks to choose from, not to mention Apple news with newspapers and magazines. It also has 5G connectivity to always get more content without requiring Wi-Fi and textbooks. So PURELY looking at eReader functionality, it is a tough call. Then there are all the other features of iPad mini like the camera, games, apps, etc.

The Kindle PaperWhite is lighter and smaller than an iPad mini, and it's not as slippery as the mini so it's a lot easier to handle when you are relaxing in a chair or in bed. But it's only best for "reading text". If your material contains charts or photographs, or if you do a lot of Wikipedia lookups, you will probably prefer the iPad because it is much more responsive.

My biggest beef with the PW is the lack of decent image support. It turns out this is a two-part problem. The hardware only does 16-level grayscale, so that's a limitation. However, I have loaded my own photographs onto my PW and they look fantastic. The images in Kindle e-books are terrible. I Googled my brains out trying to understand why. As far as I can tell, Amazon imposes an arbitrary size limit on Kindle e-books. So, even if the original e-book file contains awesome images, Amazon somehow filters them down to very low resolultion and somehow can't even do 16-level grayscale; it looks like 4-level to me. Maps are completely unreadable. I was really torn about switching to an iPad mini. I was willing to accept more frequent charging and a much higher price. And a much heavier device. But the bottom line was that I realized that Kindle e-book images would look just as terrible on an iPad as they do on the PW. Another data point: I downloaded a book from Gutenberg that was an 1896 non-fiction book about a bunch of train conductors who took a nine-week cross-country chartered train trip. The photographs were excellent. So, bottom line, IMO: if you read a lot of e-books that contain images, diagrams, maps, tables, etc., you are going to hate your kindle e-Books, on any device. I'm still looking for a solution.

The Kindle is a generic ereader. You can read books and documents from any source as long as they are available in a compatible file format, including PDF (but there are better formats). For example, I read tons of free ebooks that I have downloaded from the Project Gutenberg site. Also, I joined my local public library and I can download and read tons of free library ebooks on my Kindle. In addition, if I have a long Word document to read, I can load it on my Kindle and read it while I am traveling, or in bed. For "reading text" the Kindle Paperwhite is unsurpassed. However, as I have written elsewhere, I have two major complaints with the Kindle: first, while the Kindle itself has a semi-decent 16-level grayscale monochrome display for graphic material, Kindle books tend to have terrible graphics. My own charts, photographs, and diagrams looks terrific on a Kindle. Second, if you use the Kindle's Wikipedia lookup feature a lot, I think you will find that the Kindle is extremely slow and unresponsive compared to an iPad.

Here we compare two devices, just bought and taken out of the original box. And, of course, reading text will look better on a Kindle book. What the video doesn't say is that the iPad can be set up to read books in a way that won't tire you out. If you use a special, free, application for iPad, for reading books, then there are settings for long and not tiring reading.

That would be pretty interesting to watch Netflix in e-ink technology lol. Probably terrifying as well. Unfortunately, you can't have Netflix on a kindle without ruining the main draw of a kindle. The best you can do is apply night light filters on any tablet that supports it, but it will never be as easy on the eyes as an ebook reader.

QUESTION: I can't find anyone with answers at Amazon, so would appreciate your thoughts. I'm going to be traveling through Mexico, Ecuador, Panama, etc. I plan to load up the new Kindle Signature with books before I leave the US, but what if I want to download something in those other countries? My best guess is that I'll need to connect to my US Prime account on my iphone through a VPN so Amazon thinks I'm here and buy the book, then I'd be able to download the book on the Kindle... ? My point is that I don't know whether there's a way to connect the Kindle itself to US Amazon if I'm in another country. I sure don't want to join other country's Amazon Prime for just a few months, or even set up an Amazon account in every freaking country as I travel in order to buy books without Prime while I'm there. Whew, my brain is exploding. LOL I really appreciated this video as it helped me decide that the paperwhite is the right choice for me!

Depend on what you read, if you spend a lot of time reading text books, novel, books like self-help books, etc just buy kindle. But if you are an occasional reader and your reading mostly consist of lots of magazines, comic books, colorful books with graphics, browse through the internet, playing games and watch movies, buy ipad. In my opinion, It's not a competition, so if you are doing both, and have the money just buy it all..

I have Kindle Paperwhite and iPad Pro 11. What restrains me from reading on Kindle is the performance of the device when you read a book, when you want to flip a page and when highlight a paragraph, the device goes into seizure, with keeping in mind the nature of E-ink screen. Kindle is good for those who want to go to the beach and want to keep reading and have a bit of patency. To those who are worried about Eye straining, hear me out; in iPadOS setting you iBooks/Kindle Apps come with built-in options for improving the visuals when reading, something like using night shift, reduced the brightness when reading, and as you mentioned in the video, I applied a screen protection to avoid glare while reading.

I admit I bought the Mini 5 to replace an older Kindle PW with battery issues-and used it for that, especially in bed reading, until a really good one day deal appeared for the new Paperwhite. I, however, never used it JUST for reading-and my reading covers a lot of sources-newspapers, a few magazines, pdfs-which the PW can’t use. I also read a lot from NC digital library, Kindle format, but that is available to my Kindle as well as all my devices with Kindle app. My husband uses his older. PW for night reading but I notice he reads during the day on his 10.7 Ipad in Kindle app.

Yes, me. But not JUST for reading books, though that’s its primary use. When it comes to reading, an iPad makes reading graphics-heavy media a lot easier: graphic novels, magazines, documents and textbooks with lots of diagrams, art and art-heavy books like tabletop RPG manuals - the list goes on. Color e-ink is just, meh. I also listen to ambient music when I read, so being able stream music from KZread is an added bonus for me. Ive got plenty of graphics-heavy books and books outside the Kindle ecosystem. I never read outside, and don’t read for long enough periods to get eye strain. An iPad makes sense for my primary use case, with the added bonus of my secondary use cases: media consumption, note taking/referencing, and general browsing. I currently do all of the above on my 6th gen iPad, but I’m looking to downsize to the new iPad mini for the form factor.

Use an e-ink screen for reading, point blank. Literally nothing compares.
