Kindergarten curriculum (Heart of Dakota)

This year we will be homeschooling our third child through kindergarten. We are using the Heart of Dakota curriculum Little Hearts for His Glory. We have really enjoyed this curriculum with our older two children because of its flexibility and versatility.
This is not a sponsored video, we have purchased all of this curriculum on our own.

I would love to see how you use heart of Dakota with multiple ages. I’m interim using them but I have 4 children and am not sure how that would look in our home.

Currently we are running three guides. We have a 5th grader in creation to Christ, 3rd grader in bigger hearts, and 1st grader in beyond and a preschooler. I read the history to each kid individually and we do science all together from The creation to Christ guide. While I am doing history with one, the others are either doing independent school or on a break. We also have dropped a few HOD subjects all together, such as Bible study, poetry, and we pick and choose which rotating boxes we use. It is definitely a lot to juggle! In the creation to Christ guide the child becomes much more independent. If I did this guide as it was written, I would only be doing science, and geography with her. But she asked that I continue to do history with her That being said, we have decided to try mystery of history this next year. I am wanting something that has more family style learning and more hands on. This will also free up some time to focus on more important subjects. I don’t know what next year will completely look like because I am still researching all subject late except history and reading.

Yes we have continue using Heart of Dakota with our older kids. Our second-grader is using Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory and our fourth-grader is using Preparing Hearts for His Glory. Are you considering or are you using Heart of Dakota?

Yes, we have tried a few different curricula and switched over to HOD this year! It seems to be a great fit so far (finally!) it’s nice to see families like it and continue on with it in older years! Thanks again for sharing :)

Are there tests or evaluations with HOD? How do you evaluate your students?

There are not formal evaluations in heart of Dakota.(at least the levelsI’ve done) The curriculum relies more on oral and written narration to check for understanding of history and science topics. The older grades have note booking pages that are great for checking that also. The Singapore math that heart of Dakota recommends does reviews every so often and I try to use those as our “tests”. The review assignments I typically make them do without any help so I can really see where they’re at. Where we’re located does not require any sort of reporting of progress so I don’t worry about formal evaluation much at all. One of the great things about homeschooling is it’s so much easier to evaluate on a daily basis where the kids are. When you’re teaching one on one or in such a small group you have a chance to see every little thing the kids struggle with.

The first time we used little hearts for his glory I took “The world God made“ that the curriculum mentions and found supplemental material to go with that book. We used the book front to back instead of the pages in random order like heart of Dakota suggests. The second time we used it I ordered magic school bus science kits and went through those. We enjoyed the electricity one, and the human body one the best. The third time we went through little hearts for his glory we were going through apologia’s Exploring creation with zoology one and two.
