What’s the movie Kindergarten Cop about?
After apprehending drug dealer Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), Detective John Kimble (Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator and Junior) and his new partner Phoebe O'Hara (Pamela Reed from Bean) are sent on a mission to Astoria, Oregon. They must find Cullen's ex-wife Rachel (Penelope Ann Miller from Carlito's Way) and their child, so that she can testify against her former husband. While Phoebe has to go undercover at the elementary school, she falls ill and Kimble fills in at a moment's notice to manage the kindergarten class. The inspector's nightmare is just beginning...

    I was one of those well-behaved, "learns quickly" kids, and nothing annoyed me more than a pushover teacher who let the bad kids run the classroom. Nothing would ever get done and it makes you (as a kid) feel really bad for the teacher. All my best/favorite teachers ran "no-nonsense" classrooms at first, and lightened up to "some nonsense" after the rules were established.

    I hated gym class. Im not the most athletic guy there is, but all the teachers there had been in middle school and high school made me hate it even more. This one time gym teacher wanted to fail me because I just couldnt lift the weights he wanted me to. He didnt because a guy from our class who had lots of boxing and weight lifting training stood up to the teacher for me, It wasnt far from the guy punching the teacher in the face. It really boggles the mind that in gym class everyone is graded the same. I mean. Ive never been interested in basketball or volleyball, while others had been training for years, and im supposed to pass the same tests as those guys?

  • @eggeggy4743

    @eggeggy4743

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@plavins1 Mhhh... I think it's about passing a sufficient level. Tests are not made for those who are very trained, as they outclass everyone else by far; they could exceed the max mark. One thing is being very good and getting top marks, another thing is being acceptable. I remember being decently good at rope jumping, and to obtain 10/10 we had to do stuff like double front, double back, crossed, maybe others which i don't remember. I was the only one in my class who could get 10/10 and even perform multiple doubles, instead of the single one that was requested, but that "overkill" number of consecutive jumps was not rewarded more than the 10/10 mark. Therefore i assume a really good rope jumper or athlete of the same age could pass that test with max points easily, and this proves that tests are conceived for the average student who may not be very trained. Of course that doesn't mean you can pass it as a couch potato (talking to an indefinite "you" here, of course). Lastly, any subject needs a decent teacher. You may detest or love something just by having good or bad times in class. Sometimes i feel it would be great to rank teachers quality not only by their competences, but also by the passion they put in their job. It's such a delicate and powerful role that can literally change lives for the good or bad. :)

So if I were to interpret these contradicting sentiments: maybe Schwarzenegger feels that there is a place for drills and discipline, but that it shouldn't take over everything in life.

    As an Austrian I can say that we are very weary of anything that has to do with military culture, drills etc, obviously because of our history. I think that's a big difference compared to american culture: rather than respecting the military, we're actually very suspicious of it, because we know how much suffering it can create when you take mindless discipline too far. So i can definitly relate to Arnold! But the big difference here is his positivity and encouragement towards all the children, which is wonderful and inspiring.

    Funnily enough, this is an actual teaching technique. Some teachers I know used whistles, others used instruments. During my very short teaching stint I used a tambourine, shake it to a rhythm to get the kids attention - they stop where they are and clap the rhythm back, then you give them instructions re. whatever you want them to do. It always worked. I was always in awe of the teachers who just held a hand up in the air and somehow, 30 kids who are busy playing noticed, stopped what they were doing and went silent. That was the aspirational level, lol.

Teachers that knew how to teach by controlling the classroom and creating an effective learning environment through discipline and respect. The only way these teachers could come off as "mean" was if you were one of the troublemakers. I know this is just a character in a movie, but I feel like many kids could benefit from having teachers like him.

And I love it how he was no nonsense with the little girl, male gym teachers are often lenient towards girls in class, and many girls misused it. I loved our gym teacher in third year of HS because she always kept two options, ball sports but also exercises. Most teachers would just unlock the volleyball gym and leave, half the students weren't even doing anything. There was maybe three of us in like pilates class with her but those were the best parts of my school day.

    Not only that, but since the kids only get one toy there's a good chance they won't get the one they want so it helps the kids uderstand the concept of "doing what you can with what you can get". I imagine it would also encourage the kids to trade toys with each other.

  • @TheAlorra

    ..... It worked one time. Do you really think that this technique would work every time with no flaws. No it wouldn't. Kids are smart. They would work out how to fudge the system after a while. Like smuggling two toys onto the carpet, forcing another child to swap with them when they get bored or sneaking off the carpet to get a toy. Plus this entire thing is more about them tidying up the toys after they play. And Arnold isn't having to do any observations, dealing with misbehaviour, assessments, cleaning or toileting for those who are still in nappies. It is a fantasy of what people think being a kindergarten or preschool teacher is like.

    I like the military mentality where everyone is equal. There’s no special princess or college jock. Everyone is treated the same in terms of respect and punishment. Our society now believes we should empower everyone to be whatever they want which is a good concept in and of itself, but it creates teenagers and young adults who think they’re the center of the universe and all their needs need to be attended to. Popular girls think they’re better than anyone and the nerds and geeks feel like outcasts and end up falling into depression. This is a system more if not all our schools need. Not a military boot camp, but a more controlled unified system.

But here in Florida half the teachers are male and have close relationships with their students. We are a A school and the best in the county. I don't believe there has been any sexual harassment claims against any teacher. Again, this is just my experience. I've lived in a 'privileged' as the schools are good and the town is experiencing a economic boom, so more education spending from the county. I am sure that in some terrible schools there are piece of shots that would claim the teacher is a pedophile, but in the 7 different schools I've been in my life, the male teachers are always the most beloved and never accused of pedophilia.

He’s engaging the kids, using his police training to help him engage the kids in a game that will use their energy in a positive way and encourage them to accomplish things. If he was toxic, he’d be telling the kids that the girls are wimps and they aren’t part of this or that all the girls have to do chores for the boys while they do the “police school” thing (or something like that idk). Or he’d treat his partner (the woman cop) disrespectfully while she’s sick (or try to make a move on her when she’s sick or something). I know what you’re trying to insinuate and how hard you’re trying to be the victim here, but this holds up and no one even said this was toxic masculinity. Nice straw man, though.
