Beautifully done!! I love the touch of baby blue off to the right...and the marine blue with hints of the white. I was wondering...what do you mix your cold wax and oils on...a wooden pallet? Or Palette paper?? Thank you

BARBARA JANE Thanks Barbara! Thanks for watching! I use a paper palette. Sometimes I’ll work off more than one palette sheet at a time, so that works well for me. Big plus - easy clean up 😊

Love this! QUESTION: Does each layer need to dry before adding another?

my white swan No. I only edit out tool cleaning and paint mixing time. Otherwise, I’m working straight through. You can, of course, work on dry layers, but you don’t need to. The cold wax makes the paint dry much quicker, so it’s easier to work wet on wet than with oils alone. Use a very gentle hand to keep from muddying the colors. Dry layers do allow you to use pigment sticks, oil pastels, etc., but not necessary to have dry layers in general.

Tom Ward Thanks Tom! Sometimes I go into a painting with a rough idea of what I want, but generally I go with the flow and see where it takes me. That typically works best ☺️. Yes, after the paint has thoroughly dried (a couple weeks maybe?), you can buff to a shine. That works best if there isn’t extensive texture - so a smoother finish. Hi Kim, beautiful work. I see you have a little bottle of what looks like one of the Gamblin oil mediums on the table. Do you ever mix medium to your oil paint and cold wax mixture? If so, in what proportion?

Silvia Forrest Thanks Silvia! The bottle you see is Gambia’s Galkyd Light. It just happens to be in the shot though. I rarely use it with the cold wax and oil mediums. I typically use it to thin my oil paint when I paint my signature, as I paint it with a fine liner brush.

Kim Sobat , thank you for your response. I thought that adding the Galkyd medium might speed up the drying process but I’m not sure how it would change the consistency of the paint mix.

Silvia Forrest It would thin the paint a bit, but the CW will thicken it up again, so really no point. CW doesn’t need other mediums and dries much faster than oils alone.

Hi Kim. I have not tried cold wax and oil paint yet.....two questions. ...is there a finish coat of some type you put in your pieces like to keep them light fast etc? Also does cold wax mix with water soluble oil paints?

Pam Stefanik Actually, cold wax medium itself is the protectorate. When your painting is fully dried or cured, you can buff it to a shiny surface. A thin coat of cold wax medium can also be used as a protectorate surface on fully dried oil paintings and water based mediums such as acrylics and watercolors. I’m not sure about it’s lightfastness, and haven’t been able to find much info on that. I can’t think of any finishes that will completely protect a painting from direct sun. Varnishes and such are more to protect oil paintings from dust and dirt. Cold wax will do the same. This medium is really durable when dry - I know that much, and I haven’t experienced any fading. Yes, you can use water soluble oils, but cold wax does contain solvents itself. The scent is very mild though and the fumes are minimal. You don’t need mineral spirits at all. I only use it to clean dried on paint off my tools, but they can easily be swiped clean with a rag or paper towel while still wet.

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and new to cold wax applications. One question. With all your colors did you blend with cold wax before putting it down on the canvas, or is it straight oil paint? Thank you.

Joanne Maioli Hi Joanne - thanks for watching and subscribing to my channel. All oil paint used here is mixed 50/50 with cold wax on a palette before applying it to the panel. I mix them together with a palette knife. I will mix colors together before adding the cold wax.

Overlook Goldens Thanks for watching! The only time I use straight paint is for my signature. I always use close to a 50/50 ratio of paint to cold wax medium.

Hi, may I ask if cold wax could be used with acrylics? (I cannot stand the smell of oil paints.) Or maybe with oil pastels? By the way, I love Your work!

Nena Tirkkonen Thank you! The short answer is “no”. There is actually a bit of solvent in cold wax, so if you’re sensitive to oils you may also be a bit sensitive to cold wax (although I find the scent very mild). You can use water soluble oils with cold wax, if you find the scent less offensive. No acrylics though, I’m afraid.

Kim Sobat , thank You for answering! I was afraid that it would be the case. I have used Dorland’s wax as a final protective layer for gelli prints and other mixed media work and it seems to work ok.

Nena Tirkkonen M graham oils doesn’t have a scent, That’s what ripple have said because they use a different oil than other brands but I think the drying time is longer

Clean with Murphy’s oil soap. No lie. It will change your life 😉. -Anne Goggans KY

Bluegrass Arts Anne Yes! I do when I painted with brushes, but I mostly use scrapers and squeegees now. I don’t use anything other than a paper towel to wipe them off. 😊
