From Kim's website:
I began making my first guitar in 1991 at the age of thirteen. I was drawn to guitar making through my love of music and a keen interest in working with wood.
At fourteen I had the great fortune of meeting the luthier Peter Biffin who inspired me to really understand and experiment with new techniques for building instruments, to refine and develop all aspects of the guitar, to make them play and sound better, which I have continued to do.
Working in Melbourne for James Cargill after completing school, I refined my skills repairing and making electric and acoustic instruments for Cargill Custom Guitars.
These days I have a small workshop in Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, where I make a limited number of high quality guitars per year.
I have developed my own designs based on the 'Australian School' of guitar making. The guitar I have to offer you is a lattice-braced, arched back classical guitar, which has superb projection, clarity and sustain. Combining a full and rich tone, with bright trebles and warm basses.
My guitars are beautifully handcrafted, using the highest quality materials available. Anyone looking for a guitar with plenty of power and volume will find these qualities in a Lissarrague."

I owned one of Kim's guitars several years ago. While it was loud, it did not have a tone you could embrace. My new Cedar / Ziricote is even louder but has a beautiful resonant tone without a hint of lattice type artifacts. He has improved his instruments immensely. I love mine.

I love those Kim’s guitar. Interesting that even using nylon for the first string it still rings like crazy and doesn’t sound muddy. Spruce is looking great, and sounds awesome in this case.

That is one BIG sounding guitar. We Aussies can do some things well and Kim has obviously found his true calling in putting guitars together. I could hear that boom compared to the previous upload that I was watching and had to turn it down a bit. As always, great playing and guitar assessment and review. -Mark from Australia.

Wonderful guitar, it sounds like you're really enjoying it. Even through my phone I was able to hear how loud it is. What stands out the most is it's lyrical sound and precise intonation.

Are you using carbon strings on all your reviews or does each guitar have a different string setup?

  • @itstheguitarcollection

Hey Sal, in one way it makes sense to use the exact same strings in each video, but truthfully, some guitars work better with slightly different string setups. I usually have on whatever I think sounds best on that instrument. That being said, most videos, including this one is Daddario's EJ45ff set (carbon) but with a D'Addario high tension nylon 1st string.

@itstheguitarcollection I'm always curious of the strings during guitar reviews. I like the sound with those strings on this review! Cool new page too, I'm amazed you're coming across so many high end guitars

I wont speak for Kim, but I remember him saying the outside wood is a veneer, so it doesn't change the sound.

What a lovely sound! I’m considering getting my first lattice guitar having always played Traditional models but also want to keep playing my existing guitars. Is it possible/easy to regularly switch between Modern and Traditional guitars?

Hey Phil, I love to play all kind of guitars, and the real difference between modern and traditional is mostly in the tone color that is usually thicker on a lattice, and more sustain ( but not always) and maybe the feeling to have more dynamics. But the real feeling is for the audience, they receive a huge projection with lattice….. traditional has a tiny sound compared.

Really bad this one! Lots of clarity and strength but very stiff and nasal lattice sound and believe it or not someone will be interested in paying lots of money for it. We live in a crazy world!
