    I served in that part of the world in the mid 80's and I think that would be a amazing if peace could actually be pulled off. Back then, it was literally 2 armed to the teeth country's facing off against each other. Every Friday at noon a nation wide air raid drill would happen. The city around the base I was at would fully participate in every way. It was always just one terrifying tick away from igniting. Beautiful country in South Korea. The people and the food were amazing! I got to say, they were just ordinary people, folks just like you and me. I for one would love to see them truly united in peace.

I should also add I do love Simons videos, but this one seemed lacking to me. What about Kim still allowing the prison camps to operate? What about the exploitation of his people, how his administration basically treats them as slaves? His brother's assasination? But instead of that we get a detailed explanation of his relationship with Denis Rodman. We all already know about that, who cares? He seemed to be going verrrry light on the bad stuff.

For anyone interested, there's a great book out there on what happened called "All the Shah's Men". It provides context as to why Iran and the West have had a very sour relationship.

Of course the Western oil companies didnt like that they would loose all that big fat profit. My Dad used to talk about it and how wronged the Iranian people were by the greed of the Western Oil companies specifically the US the UK and The Netherlands but mainly the US and UK.

    William Roberts Yup, I kinda feel bad for Un. His father and grandfather have put him in an awful situation. If he tries to open the eyes of the public he will lose power; but if he doesn’t do that, then they live in isolation, but his aim is to remove that. I think the best course of action to do, is slowly and steadily open the eyes of the people, and thus not risking revolution and bloodshed, which would not only remove Un from power, but also ruin the already worse economy even more making it far beyond hope for mending. My guess is in a 20-30 years, NK should be the first dictatorship globalised country, should everything go according to plan. Still, I would never want to be in Un’s place, the level of stress that guy is facing with this issue, would likely make me insane lol.

    This was very good! There were several things that I had learned from this that I did not know previously. But there were other things that I wish you had addressed in more detail. Like how he executed an ex-girlfriend of his (the reason for which varies depending on the source) and assassinated his own brother. Also, I wish you had talked about the cyber attack on Sony believed to have originated from North Korea over the political satire film "The Interview" (which is about his assassination). I wish you had mentioned that while his father did also have concentration camps, Kim Jong Un has DRAMATICALLY increased the number of camps and thus, the number of people (including entire families) in those camps has also skyrocketed. You also stated how North Koreans are better fed now but you didn't mention how there was another famine in North Korea back in 2014 (though while not as large as the one in the 90s, was still big) that Kim had to contend with and it was another one of his struggles early on and many had predicted it could bring his downfall, but almost miraculously, it wasn't. Finally, you didn't talk about how Kim is basically exporting North Koreans for cheap labor in countries like Russia and elsewhere and in those countries the North Korean laborers are paid so little it's regarded as an example of human trafficking. These are just some of the things you missed, but otherwise this was good :)

    Excellent video, excellent job portraying him as human as opposed to vilifying him solely as the devil incarnate we are all so used to seeing. This makes me wonder if he realizes his unique position on the scrolls of time so to speak. He can be as revered or more as his grandfather, and all he has to do is open the doors; that one simple gesture could endear him for the right reasons to the citizens of not only North Korea but of the world as a whole. Whether he uses his family's regime and indoctrination as an excuse or as the legitimate reason why he acted the way he did, either way it would go a considerable distance in explaining-though still not justifying- his actions and policies. It would be time for the Christians of the world to put their money where their collective mouths are and start handing out some forgiveness...... Remember, every saint has a past, and every sinner a future.

    Mike Hartley Okay, so I’m a Christian, and I believe very strongly in forgiveness and redemption for every human. My Christian values (and also my basic humanity) teach me to value *all* human beings. It is precisely because of those values that I won’t let him off the hook at this point. Absolutely not. I normally love biographics, it’s typically pretty unbiased and reliable. But this one downplayed the human rights aspects, of which Kim Jong Un is, as Supreme Leader, more than complicit in. The famine where people “struggled to survive,” which Simon mentioned in passing, killed millions. People were resorting to cannibalism. You can read many first hand accounts by North Korean Refugees (Under the Same Sky by Joseph Kim is one). In the mines (they do coal mining too), not only are the conditions *extremely bad,* resulting in many deaths from poor attention to safety, the government also often neglects to pay workers in return for their ridiculously long hours literally slaving away in those conditions. The concentration camps are awful. Google them and you’ll find tons of first hand accounts of guards training their dogs to attack the prisoners, little girls beaten to death over a grain of corn, various forms of unfathomably cruel torture, forced abortions, etc. If kids are caught skipping school (which many of them have to do if they don’t want to starve), they are sent to a juvenile concentration camp. Joseph Kim talks about his experience there, where they had to listen to the girls being raped in the other room nightly. This video paints Kim Jong Un as some kind of passive observer who somehow wants what’s best for his country. He is a whorish fiend not worthy of being roasted on a spit like a pig. He’s a sickening human being. I refuse to support such a sick man or his regime in any capacity. If there’s anyone on this planet I’d like to send to Hell and have done with, it’s him. Instead, I’ll stick to helping the organization that helps North Korean refugees reach and adjust to freedom, LINK (Liberty in North Korea), and praying for those people to be released from the clutches of that earthly demon. It’s all we can do right now without going to war. My gosh, I hate this guy. -.- Sorry, I feel like he was given waay too much credit in these videos, and the human rights problem was just glossed over like it barely existed. And I feel like it’s unfair to place all the responsibility on Christians. Why does it seem like people think Christians are the only ones who should care about this stuff?? You’re human, too - Christians don’t and shouldn’t have a monopoly on compassion. Especially considering how poorly many of them have been doing on that front lately.

    @@emilypaxton5601 I am a very proud Christian as well, Protestant Lutheran to be exact, just for the record. Thank you for the well worded reply and for taking the time to answer me. I hope you don't feel I singled out Christians for anything other than to practice forgiveness, and I picked Christians based only on the fact that as a Christian, I know the religion preaches forgiveness. I also hope you don't consider my short reply as anything other than sincere. In this case, I'm referring to our discussion, it does not matter what the atrocity, nor how high the body count, we are only discussing sin. It is our job as Christians to practice forgiveness, not to pass judgment. We are not giving the ability nor the right to compare, to measure, or to weigh any sin against another. Judgment rests solely with the Lord. I am not discounting any of the undoubtedly countless number of unspeakable acts committed bye the North Korean governing regime, but again my job is to forgive not to judge. I honestly feel the issue at hand is a common one, one I often find myself stuck in the middle of. Simply put, the issue is our own morals against our own ethics. It is confusing, but this is how I explain it when I bring it up: my ethics allow me to act professional and polite while I arrest and jail a murderer or a child predator but my morals keep me from having him over for dinner and introducing my family. The atrocities and events which have occurred in North Korea during the rule of the Kim's would probably keep me from having Christmas with the Kim family, but I would still be delighted and happy to find out the rulers of North Korea lifted the curtain and truly sought forgiveness.

    I understand what you're getting at. I'd be thrilled if he y'know, stopped torturing and killing people and decided to try his hand at acting like a real live human being. In that hypothetical scenario, I would be willing to forgive the past. But when the sin is active, continuous, and deliberate - especially when it involves the subjugation and destruction of irreplaceable and indescribably valuable human lives, he hasn't fulfilled the precedent to forgiveness, which is repentance. While Jesus is willing to forgive everything, he always first required repentance and for his people to devote their lives to serving him and doing better by others. Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, continues to oppress and murder others. So yeah, I feel absolutely no obligation to forgive him. In my opinion, that's part and parcel of the commitment to love people and defend the weak which the Bible so consistently demands. How are we supposed to end oppression as the Bible exhorts us to if we're unwilling to even call it out for the evil it is? But again... I understand where you're coming from. xD I generally try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I simply don't think there's any room for doubt with this guy. He is completely aware of what he is doing, and he is doing it deliberately and without any apparent remorse. He's one of the few people whose trajectory to Hell I see little reason to lament.

    Four years on the evidence is mixed. Some economic improvements and signs of limited market enterprise but also even harder repression. It’s basically impossible to escape the country now. It’s was actually easiest during the famine because guards were so easily bribed. It’s partly a sign of improving living conditions that it’s hard to defect but that’s because the improved conditions make the oppression apparatus more effective.

    The meeting between the leadership of the US and the DPRK is one of the greatest pieces of diplomacy in recent history. The Kim played a blinder in getting the US to come to the table and the leadership of the US too could have rejected the offer but instead accepted it. You’re wrong a number of points though: The DPRK didn’t “break off” from the South, the US forcibly dissolved the unified democratic government the PRK and installed a military dictatorship in the South. They also weren’t “fighting on the side of democracy” as South Korea was a brutal tyranny which massacred scores of it’s political opposition and was made up of Japanese collaborators.

    Keating McFarland Journalism inevitably involves selectivity in the presentation of facts. No one but God has access to all the facts concerning an individual person, a complete understanding of what influences and motivates him/her. And even God Himself has a 'point of view'. Not only is 'neutral objectivity' unattainable; I am not even sure that it is desirable. One of the goals of journalism, in some well-established traditions, is to persuade. There are times, and this is once such time, when pretense to 'neutrality' is really an abdication of moral discernment and responsibility. I am NOT however an advocate of 'Western' interests in Korea. Rather, I would point out the importance of KOREAN perspectives on this subject, especially those of North Koreans who have fled the Kim regime at immense personal risk to receive a fraternal welcome in the South. (Psalm 9:12) 'For He Who requires blood remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.' (Proverbs 17:15) 'He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord.' We need to be very cautious in offering support to vicious and tyrannical regimes, regardless of their ideological underpinnings.

  • @KtangMC

    @KtangMC

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@jesusislordsavior6343 No it doesn’t. Modern journalism does but that’s because it has been turned into a partisan political tool. Journalism serves to inform, not to persuade. That’s what opinion columns are for. And facts are facts. They themselves are incapable of choosing a side. They are, at their essence, neutral. People are of the mindset that lack of condemnation is the same as support. That couldn’t be farther from true. Especially when speaking in a biographical sense. You present the facts as they are and allow the reader to make up their mind. And for the record, I’m not a Christian so your sermon does absolutely nothing for me when it comes to making your point any more valid.

  • @jesusislordsavior6343

    @jesusislordsavior6343

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@KtangMC I certainly did NOT expect you to be a Christian, given your initial remarks. I had no expectation either of approval or of changing your mind. But I got from you as much civility as could be expected under the circumstances. I abhor partisanship myself; but for me, uncritical approval of the ideals and practices of 'modern' journalism (as opposed to the bad old kind of muckraking) is somewhat akin to partisanship. Also let's be realistic in our assessment of human nature. Journalists simply cannot refrain from giving their opinion, and as I have observed, they are often requested to do so. I get easy access to CBC and CNN, and I see this happening all the time. Both news outlets have a 'point of view' which is easily recognizable, although neither is the organ of a political party. And I don't mind pontification so long as it admits to being pontification, so long as I am able to change the channel. Certain media 'stars' are paid to offer their two cents' worth. 'Facts are facts'. This sounds patently obvious. I certainly agree in principle, although I prefer the word 'truth' to 'fact', because 'truth' accommodates more than just physical data. Yet when different people speak of 'facts', they do not always mean the same thing. Typically they mean, 'whatever I believe to be true'. All this business about subjectivity vs. objectivity often turns out to be a farce, a cover for hubris and a know-it-all attitude. Hence 'alternative facts'. Sorry if this sounds a bit cynical. Also we must beware the artificiality of placing 'fact' and 'belief' in binary opposition. Some beliefs are indeed fact-based, and it requires a measure of 'faith' to believe yet other facts. The Resurrection of Christ would be an excellent case in point, because while it is very well documented historically, it challenges 'a priori' assumptions which many hold about the physical universe. At one point I had to deal with that challenge myself, and I chose to ignore my presuppositions in order to give the text its due AS historical narrative. I have never regretted that choice, although I do not take credit for it in any way. Anyway, claiming to remove 'value judgments' from the news bespeaks value judgment---------------the judgment that value judgments have no value. Yes, let's stay cold as ice when hearing about the misfortunes of others. What a great way to advance social justice.

    This smooths over a great deal of nuance and the differences between the circumstances of the three are important to remember. Trump is a celebrity president elected by the last racist gasp of the baby boomer generation as they grow increasingly senile, while trying to cling to their power over culture and try to recreate the world they remember from their childhoods with increasingly rose-tinted glasses. Putin, on the other hand, is the Marxian farce-echo of Hitler, trying to blame the loss of Russian power on Bolshevism and its early feminism and modernism, as well as trying to destroy the LGBT community with the church as a weapon. Returning to Stalinist natalist and male-dominated policies while rejecting Communism and trying to restart the Russian Empire where it left off. His annexation of the Crimea and invasion of Ukraine remind me of the Munich Agreement and his nationalism is highly worrying. Kim Jong-un is unlike both of them. He inherited a mess like Putin did, but unlike Yeltsin who obliterated much of the USSR's social services, abandoning rural areas as the heroin-addicted people waited to die, and leaving rust-belts where an economy had once been, Kim Jong-il was a recluse who resembled Big Brother in the nakedly totalitarian vision he had for a prison state as a means to deal with the pressures of the food crisis brought on by the loss of the DPRK's superpower ally and let the people die of starvation. Kim Jong-un is doing everything he can to clear out the old generations of military leaders to bring in new, younger minds to the WPK and to improve the conditions of women in the DPRK.

    I personally think he might have been forced to kill his brother thanks to pressure/plans from other powerfull figures in North Korea. It might not have been on his orders at all as his brother would be far more of a help to modernize North Korea then a threat to his power.

    Late to the party but I wanted to applaud you on this excellent biographics video. It's so refreshing to see someone even attempt an unbiased assessment of anything these days let alone do so successfully with such a difficult subject. Well done, and thank you. "He is the enemy and therefore he is a bad man" is just not good enough. With understanding comes the possibility of dialogue. With dialogue comes the possibility of a better world for all of us. Maybe it's because this video is four years old already but I do agree with many comments here that this video painted him with way more of a positive light than he deserves. I think there is a lot of truth to what was said here but I really think that in addition to protecting his life and his family, he really does love living with his level of privilege. My understanding is that he eats and drinks a lot which is why he has serious heart conditions at his age. While that is in itself not a crime, it does seem to indicate to me that he is not that concerned with the well being of the North Korean people but he wants to continue to be able to do what he wants, when he wants, and how much he wants. Better than his dad? Sure. This level of altruistic? No way.

    phenomenom9 Surely you are being sarcastic. Or else you have never heard any information that has leaked out from 30,000 North Korean defectors in South Korea (and that figure is getting old already). When did you last pick up a history book? Why was Pyongyang considered the 'capital of Asian Christianity' before the Kim family took over, with the protection of Stalin and Mao? Why has Seoul become that instead? It has to do with the Korean War, which the communists started, and with communist persecution of Christians. In North Korea, being caught while Christian means internment in a concentration camp or death. Would you like to be treated similarly for YOUR beliefs, whatever those may be?

And it is about time that you started listening to Him. You do not know how long you may live, but as it says, 'it is appointed for men to die once, then judgment'. Jesus is the only One able to spare you from judgment. Of course, if you don't KNOW or CARE about the suffering of the North Korean people, it might seem 'silly' to you when someone comments adversely on the regime. But how would YOU like to scrounge around in the countryside, collecting tree bark from which to make tea? How would YOU like to be put in a concentration camp upon mere SUSPICION of disrespect for your great Leader? How would YOU like to do 10 years' compulsory military service? How would YOU, even as a relatively prosperous citizen in your capital city, like to have electricity supplied for only TWO hours a day? These goings-on are only the tip of the iceberg that is North Korea. Get some real information. There are more than 30,000 North Korean defectors from all ranks of society, living in South Korea. Too bad you have no access to their stories. Or will you just write these people off as 'traitors', because they took risks to improve their lot in life?
