IKR? Starting in the late 1970s, he developed a tumor-like growth on the back of his neck which was a calcium deposit. Its location near his brain and spinal cord made it inoperable. Because of its ugly appearance, North Korean reporters always shot and filmed Kim Il Sung from his same slight left angle to hide the tumor, which became a difficult task as the growth reached the size of a baseball by the late 1980s. The tumor is still visible on his embalmed body.

You can still quote defectors, but if you're gonna do that, give me stuff from defectors who haven't fallen to the well-documented South Korean incentivization to create sensationalist stories about North Korea. You can argue that North Korea is poor and the people are malnourished because that's true, and the reasons have more nuance to it than "North Korea bad". But give me unbiased proof (i.e; not by RFA or incentivized people, nor by North Korean state media or its perceived allies) that the leaders of North Korea have taken control of people's freedoms

I would definitely concure here. This man sure has quite a story to tell. He's seen Imperial Japanese occupation, and then Western bombing just a few years later, barely any time to recover from fighting off the Japanese. Years later was basically rebuilding as best as they could whilst standing firm beside the Soviet Union and all it's ups and downs until it collapsed.

Tbh, if Kim il Sung didn't pick his son as his successor, he might've then be seen as a benevolent dictator. He did good for his country on the whole, much better than his son and grandson, but imposing dynastic family rule out of greed is his biggest mistake. He would be praised even better if he allowed the dissolution of communist North Korea and the unification of the Korean penisula in 1989, following the trend in Eastern Europe at the time. Then he would become a hero because at least he raised his country to decent standards at the time (80s).
