I was considering this but landed on the Casio PRO TREK PRW-3400-1JF. To me, I think a superior choice, aesthetically and dial layout - not to mention a rotating bezel. I should add that with all the Mudman hype lately, I started looking into the past and the significance of the line in the history of G-Shock. So, I just had to add one, lol - an older one which I think is better - GW-9300CM-1JR (incoming from Japan) and a bit more collectable, imo. Great review and agree with many of your points.

I do like that one. It was originally released in Japan a good 6 months (if not more) ahead of the US, at the time we weren't sure if it was going to come to the North American market, so myself and a few folks on Watchuseek sent funds to a Japanese retailer that extended themselves to forum members (I think this was in 2012, it was a lot trickier to browse Japanese sites I recall). I got the grey one. After all this time it finally indicated low battery just last week, crazy battery life on this one.

This is my early birthday present for myself. My 9400 has a negative display, but I'm going for the positive display this time around.

The dual layer LCD is neat. One of the very few G shocks with one.

Had a Rangeman for 10 yrs. Works great, but eyes are going and negative display is killing me. I just went to a 9500-1 positive display and set the light for 3 sec. Love it. Can read time in the dark as long as my glasses are worn.

I recently got a Mudman 9500 and it has replaced Rangeman 9400, which I sold to a work mate. I like the bigger digits on 9500, but the biggest advantage with it is the good fitting on the wrist. The extremely long flat backside of 9400 may work good for those with 20+ cm wrists, but for normal and smaller wrists 9500 is awesome!

This looks like it might just be the ultimate survival watch! I like it.

It does everything the Rangeman does, I wouldn’t be surprised if a new version on the Rangeman come out with a new design and features.

Had to order one of these. We have similar taste in watches. Thanks for sharing. ONLY channel I sub to anymore related to watches.

Seems like a bargain of a watch, great review. I have a 7.5 inch wrist, it should suit, but it will be chunky. I am more used to squares.

Yeah. Casio makes a regular Casio model with the same screen for like $50 Canadian and it looks like they used the same one for this g shock. I like the screens sharper.

@@67kikki same. My negative display 9300 is over 10 years old and going strong. I always wanted a positive display, but this does not seem like it.

guess light pusher is intended to angle that way since you may "accidentally" press it and drain the battery. goes to more of a intentional lightning

The details shown on the dial doesn’t look dark enough for normal reading, I foresee it will be even worse under the sunlight.

why don't they launch a version of this watch with the MIP display?

Kinda reminds me of my old Casio pathfinder watch.

Seemed like the pushers were a little difficult or unresponsive. I wish it had the new MIP display. Other than that it’s pretty awesome.

The pushers were a bit hard but I was also dealing with a brand new watch and wasn't familiar with their location.

Awesome review! I'd rather just get a Protrek PRG-30. Cheaper, smaller, and has a better watch face. Although might be less though than GW9500

Thanks for your great review, waiting to order the same model up here in Canada. Just 2 concerns that I have with this watch....the screen looks too shallow ( wish they had bullbars for this bad boy) and the light button seems to be too exposed.

I agree! The crystal is not protected like with Rangeman 9400 which has substantial edges around.

Why did the blue line come on the screen during the barometer screen? Also, why in the heck didn’t they add moon and tide graph. Would have been perfect if they would have added that.

From the Video,s I have seen so far.....The upper Duplex Screen is making the Display less sharp than it could be......It,s noticeable on the Positive Model.....And even more so on the Negative Display Models.....Still prefer the Green one though....Negative Display or not. Be interesting to see what variants of the new Mudman appear in the next 12 Months....If only Casio could fit a MIP Module to this.....That would be awesome.

I have to admit that the negative display on the green model is a little MORE legible than that of the green Rangeman without duplex in most angles, and the LED light is also brighter! Very surprised indeed.

do you suggest new one or the old one? for special forces. I dont want a watch that needs getting charged. I prefer long distance watches atleast 5 years. if this is not good I will buy old rangeman(with no bluetooth, from 2010)

Reminds me of my rangeman. I like how the time display is much larger or appears larger than on my rangeman 9400-1 makes it worse because my rangeman always has that foggy appearance which worsens when temperatures drop below 50°F. Im strongly considering ordering this madman. Does this watch display date and day at same time as the time? Or time only?

Lets take today's example (Thursday, 25th of April): In time mode you have the choice to toggle between [4.25[, [TH25], and the [barometric graph] in the upper field in addition to the time (always on in the middle).

Auto recieve is fine during the day, you just need L3 otherwise it will fail.

24h time format and screen will be not so empty ;)

Actually The protrek PRW-3500 it's water resistant to 200 meters (660 feet),,,,with the same function of GW9500,,, for less of half of the price.

So you found ONE Pro Trek that's 200m WR. This is a G-Shock so it's tougher and of course a brand new model so yeah it'll be more expensive. Thanks for watching.

Pro treks aren't even available in certain regions.

Mudman needs a led torch light build in....Would be easy to do like Garmin does in some of their watches.....C'mon Casio keep up the pace....Oh while your @ it trackback function on models with GPS and build GPS into cheaper Mudman models..

Gosh i have been getting emails about this for a couple weeks and i am on the fence. Lets see which way i sway

Nope not for me, it reminds me of my suunto vector from 2002. On the hard pass express the display seems so light too.

I haven't stopped wearing mine since FedEx delivered it a few weeks ago!!

In time mode, press the upper left button for 2 sec., then lower left button 10 times, chose between 1 and 3 for the duration by pressing the lower right button. Hope that helps.

How long without exposing to Sun the battery last?

It's always a matter of preference. J wear a 49mm Suunto and a GPW-2000 on a 6,25in wrist. I also do wear 38mm mechanical watches.

I prefer the Rangeman GW-9400 way more than this. There is far too much unused space on the face of the watch and the duplex LCD isn't as clear as I'd want it in this case.

I feel it's expensive for a recycled movement. Protrek are just as durable.

When was this watch released? How many years old is a watch?

I ordered 2 gshock tough solars recently one was manufactured late 2021 and the other late 2022(i bought 2 g5600ue, it was released in 2021) , so if you are buying a watch thats released recently you can get a fresh watch that hasn't been sitting in a box for years like the older models. I want to buy gw-9400 later this year but that watch was released in 2013 so im not sure which years stock i will get. Gw-9400y is newly released but i dont like the color. Yes, gw-9500(the model in the video) is released recently (mid 2023 i think )

This watch is complete garbage. The screen is an absolute failure.... especially when they have significantly better displays on far cheaper models😅 Maybe this is a warning for the future...

Which cheaper models do you recommend? I'm not too bothered about the ABC functions, just interested in a solar + atomic digital G-Shock.

Display is a piece of .... It is a cheap crap not a watch you can use daily. I had it 2 days and returned. Author must be well paid by Casio....

@@sennamontea1380 The display almost looks the same as the ProTrek PRW-3510Y i have, which is tough solar and multiband 6 atomic timekeeping. Best to do your own research instead of taking someone's word for it.

Is it me, or does the display look washed out?

People are knocking but, having seen this black positive display model in the flesh, I think it's one of the best models currently for sale. The LCD screen is clear and the larger numerals are very legible. Also, it doesn't have the segmented dial like my old Rangeman, which to me, makes the display much cleaner and easier to read. Having tried it on it's also more comfortable on the wrist. The neg display model wasn't good at all IMHO, more style over function.

GW-9500-1JF Japan version

The thing I hate ONLY about Gshock is that whenever they release a thing of a beauty model, I am still stuck with my current one coz it still functions like new!

So far, Mudman has had an interesting and really specific design. Both g-9000 and g-9300 stood out in this respect. Unfortunately, the new one looks like a hybrid of g-squat with GPRB 10001. In addition, after taking it into your hands, it strikes with the performance of a watch from the lower price shelf. It disappointed me greatly. I have two previously mentioned watches, but I will definitely not buy the latest in this series. Casio took the damn easy way this time...👎

Umm, excuse me (sliding my glasses back into place) it's a Star-nosed mole (or scientifically known as a Condylura cristata) holding a magnetic needle of the compass. Please know it was said in jest but my information is accurate.

I have had a g shock watch from sportsman's warehouse since 2018 and amazingly it is still running strong without a battery change . For the last year I keep thinking the battery will die . Great watch for 120 buck's. That's a pretty nice watch I like the compass. Enjoy

G-shock needs to start making all watches with MIP displays. This old LCD tech is just not cutting it anymore. Maybe since the watch is a Mudman, they decided to make the display muddy. 😂 Seriously though, they need to get with the times.

If you live in Colorado and you are a couple thousand feet above sea level, you are about a thousand feet underground. In the lowest spot in Colorado. Just saying.....

Should have just made it the updated rangeman since it looks just like a GPS rangeman cuz this does not say mudman to me.

Same batery life, i dont think so, the 2000 you have to charge, this watch no, its not even an option...Way better batery life, no smart funktions like heart rate and stuff,no bluetooth, they are diferent,cheers ....

I go out for long week trips. Don’t want my watch running out of battery. Don’t want to worry that I disabled features so my watch won’t run out of battery.

i think Casio better slap Protrek style bold number fonts there. for it is now is cheapish. really bad viewing angles only to make it worse.

I bought first the MUDMAN GW-9500-1A4ER with negative display. After a few minutes of testing, I packed the watch back up and immediately returned the watch to the retailer. The negative display is so difficult to read, that the compass cannot be used at all. If you don't hold this Mudman with negative display at a very specific reading angle, it's not usable at all. A day later I ordered the Mudman GW-9500-1 with positive display and have now received it and …I am happy now. What's the matter with you Casio? You produce also negative display watches with STN-LCD (super twisted nematic) which gives a much better contrast (even on solar powered watches) and is so much easier to read in lower light. Why didn’t you implement this display-type in the Mudman? Wouldn't the nice compass animation then have been possible and or would the watch then have become too expensive? I can only advise against buying the Mudman with a negative display. You will regret it...definitely.
