    Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do the show this year. Everything is choreographed and I have all of the fireworks, but we had to cancel the show due to COVID. I was hopeful that I’d be able to do it at the end of the summer, but it isn’t looking good. If lot, I guess that means I’m ready that much earlier for next year.

    Hi Rich, I have been researching and learning about getting into pyromusical fireworks myself. (Your videos are fantastic! And some of the best I have found anywhere.) Something I haven’t been able to figure out is how you get your larger shells to hit so well in the beat. So could you answer two questions for me: 1. What igniter setup do you use on your shells? 2. What is the timing delay you try and lead by on the shells to hit the beat on explosion? Or maybe a better way of phrasing it, how do you figure out/estimate the time it takes from launch to bang so you can lead the launch ahead of the music by that. Any other advice would be plenty welcome, Thank you!

  • @richhagemeyer

    @richhagemeyer

    3 жыл бұрын

    I use eMatch/MJG Firewire initiators plugged directly into the 1st tube of the cakes. For timing, I mostly use the defaults in Finale 3D. The software has pre-fire times built into the simulations. I hit a lot of the beats with mines and comets, which are even easier to time since the effect starts at the beginning.

Also, I have looked at Pyroland to order some stuff, but they seem to be quite a bit more expensive than Spirit of 76 or WFBOOM, have you found that to be accurate and are there any places you think give pretty good bang for the buck? Thanks!

    Thanks! I use Home Depot buckets for the cremoras, and I stick a pie tin in the bottom. I know other folks who have taken old propane tanks and cut the tops off. For Pyroland, I've found them to be competitive, and their quality is really good. I'm fortunate that they're local, and I've been able to get in on group buys. If you can get other folks near you together, they might be open to do a group buy.

  • @richhagemeyer

    Thanks! My friend has been taking care of this for me for the past few years. Here are the settings he used: Camera: Sony A7RII Lens: 15mm Nikon (with adapter) - manual focus ISO: 800 F stop: F4.5 Shutter: 1/30 Distance: ~200 feet back Camera placement: ~10 feet in front of the PA system Don't forget that video aspect ratio is different than picture aspect ratio, so line up/angle your camera while it is in video mode The far left & right firing stations are about 160 feet apart. At the beginning of this video, you may notice the camera moving. My friend needed to get a little further back because some of the breaks were going off the top of the screen. This year I'm planning to use some of the Dominator 62mm single shot pro shells, so we may need to move even further back. I know other folks that have multiple cameras, drones, etc. We had footage from a friend's drone in 2014, but not since. All of this would be great, but I'm too busy on the day-of to deal with all of that. TX Pyro (kzread.info/dron/TLhXyq_WZ6noCbiLJW36gA.html) always has great video, including incorporating pictures from during prep & setup. Maybe this year I'll remember to take those types of pictures... One of the challenges I've had in the past is the audio mix. I like to hear both the music and the sound of the fireworks without dropouts, etc. I've tried mixing the original source music & the camera audio (which had both the fireworks sound & the music), but could never get it to line up right and always ended up with an echo. The only time it really did work is when I had a directional mic on a 2nd camera really close to the fireworks, so everything was pretty isolated. I'll probably continue to tinker, but the last few years have been ok with the placement above.

    Holy crap that was awesome. I'm thinking about doing something like this next year, but about 1/2 the time. My issue is the Cues. I only have 72 cues. Is everything wired to individual cues? I wonder if I could pull of something like this with a mix of cues, and fusing.

  • @richhagemeyer

    @richhagemeyer

    3 жыл бұрын

    For my show, everything is wired to individual cues (or wired together and then into a single cue). I know some folks use fusing for things that don't need specific timing, and that could be an approach you take. Save your cues for single shots like mines, comets, and shells (so you can be sure to hit the beats you want), and then use fusing between cakes to space out the background stuff.

I like it, but I'll probably stick with more 18M if I expand my system more. I like the additional flexibility individual boxes provide. That being said, the 36M/72M option means less batteries to worry about, and you still get good flexibility (as long as your cables are long enough). You'll be able to do a lot with 5 72Ms!

    I try not to think about how much time I spend on this hobby . It's a little hard to arrive at a time, and I've definitely gotten faster as I've done this year after year. I I use Finale Fireworks (the old one, not 3d) to script. Here's my process for scripting: 1: Update inventory in Excel. I've got a workbook with lots of formulas so I can see what I have in inventory, what I've used for the current year, what's left, etc. (as well as basic metadata on timing, effect, etc.). 2: Create simulations in Finale for anything new (cakes, shells, etc.). I do this up front so it doesn't interrupt my flow. I've found getting things right in Finale (especially timing) really helps me when it comes to mapping out the show. I probably go overboard on trying to get the simulations accurate, especially since the old version of the software won't be supported next year and I can't justify the Finale 3D cost. This part probably isn't as critical, but I love being able to see my show. 3: Edit song(s) for time using Audacity or Adobe Audition. I try to always start with FLAC files as source, and I output mp3 & FLAC versions of the edited songs. Audition is a lot more powerful in how edits work, but it's expensive. I add 10 seconds of silence to the beginning of each song. 4: Script each song one at a time as their own "show" in Finale. I do separate "shows" for several reasons, including the fact that Finale got unstable for me as my show got bigger, I like to play with song order, and if a song isn't working for me, I can swap something else in. I update inventory in Excel with what I use as I go. As I work on additional songs I will sometimes over-use my inventory, but I don't worry too much about that in this first phase. I watch, tweak, repeat a bunch of times until I feel like I'm 90% there with what I want. Some song are really easy (30 min - 1 hour). Others are not (1-5 hours). It really depends on how complex the song is. 5: Merge the songs into a single file using Audacity. This is why I output FLAC versions during the editing step, so my final output is of highest possible quality. 6: Merge the "shows" into a single show in Finale. This part is probably the clunkiest since copy/paste doesn't work quite how I'd like it to in Finale, but I make it work. 7: Clean up the show. Now that everything is in one place I spend 5-8 hours tweaking various things like resolving inventory issues, shift things around, add/remove effects, etc. The super high level answer to "how many people" is that I spend the week before the 4th getting everything ready, and on the day-of I have ~10 people across 2 shifts. We finish by mid-afternoon. I'm happy to share more about that but this has gotten long enough as it is. Hit me up on pyrocommunity.com or pyrouniverse.info. Username is Crispy Pyro

    Thanks! I use Finale Fireworks, but I'm definitely worried about it going end-of-life next year. I can't justify the cost of the hobbyist version of Finale 3D for one show a year, so I'm going to have to figure something out. I DO really like the visual aspect of designing the firework simulations in Finale, which is why I've avoided some of the other options until now.

    @@alexuppal1003 I realized I hadn't responded to this. If you're in the UK, you probably won't have the exact same fireworks available. Most everything is consumer effects, so you can look at different manufacturers/distributors for similar effects. The mines, comets, and fan slices aren't "display" fireworks, but you have to have some level of documented proficiency in order to get them (at least in the US). If you're just getting started, I recommend finding a club or a company that offers training. The only forum I'm familiar with in the UK is www.fireworks-forum.org.uk/.
