1:04:00 The phenomenon being described is called the Mammalian Diving Reflex, it’s a body function that allows humans to survive for long periods of time in cold water by slowing the breathing and heart rate to nearly 0 and essentially putting the body into a state of stasis. In emergency medicine, rescuers and providers are taught to treat cold water drowning victims as if they are “alive” until their core temperature reaches normal. It’s often said “Nobody is dead until they are warm and dead.”

I used to drive truck through Wisconsin all the time. One of deliveries was in a small town and the place was closed,I was hungry, and there was a small bar like 50 ft away from where I was parked. So,bar pizza it is. I went in and ordered a pizza. Turns out it was a bunch of nam vets that got together once a year to talk. They decided to let me stay. I sat there and watched them show their videos they took and pictures they took and the things they went through. Nice guys. I was just a dirty grain hauler that was hungry surrounded by a bunch of combat vets. Anyway, that’s my Wisconsin bar story.

The plane crash in 2001 was an A300 taking off out of JFK. They encountered wake turbulence and the pilot flying responded poorly. He gave excessive rudder inputs in both directions, over-stressing the vertical stabilizer and causing it to snap off. 100% pilot error.

There was a video about it on National Geografic...At first it was believed it was terrorism, than they wondered if an error in productionnof the composite vertical stabiliser, ended up that the Airline trained the pilots improperly and the pilot turnind the rudder from 1 extreme setting to another instead gently a few degres and that caused too much force on the rudder and it broke off.

My grandfather was a knight of Columbus through the Catholic church. I myself am not of the faith, but you certainly have the organization pinned. They do a great deal of charity work, community building, and have a few social events. It always made me proud seeing the things my grandfather would do. He is an amazing man. Marine, law enforcement, and a full knight. It's rare I hear anyone mention them. Happy to see someone knows about them.

During Lent at the church I went to as a kid the Knights would put on a free fish fry every Friday for anyone who needed a meal or wanted to go, member of the congregation or not, and just asked for donations if you were able to give. They would also dress up and do the flags and things for any kind of ceremony being held at the church such as Boy Scouts.

My APGOV teacher foamed at the mouth for AMERICA (this was in 08-09). The dude loved justice, he loved the American system of government (far from perfect, but better than anything else we've got), and he introduced us to soooo much of the writing of the founding fathers. He made us memorize the entire Consitution, as well as what it means, too. It was an amazing class, and I think my first year voting I wrote him in as Sheriff for my county because I didn't like any of the provided options.

My grandmother drove the Killdozer before Marv bough it. Ritchie Bros auctions is 12 miles from my house ( I work right next to the place ), and whenever they have one of their big biannual auctions they hire on a lot of extra people to move the vehicles and tractors...etc around because they're selling so much stuff. My grandmother used to hire on for that job every year, and she drove that Komatsu dozer onto the auction block before it was sold.

"he was a relative of arguably the greatest president we've ever had" THANK YOU. Theodore Roosevelt was fucking BASED beyond comparison. So many history teachers foam at the mouth over FDR but leave out Teddy's contributions. Also, Marvin just straight up built a whole ass tank and the only major thing he forgot was an armored radiator. That is honestly pretty damn impressive. Talk about pride in your craft.

The progressive period saw a re-alliance of church and state - secularized extreme Pietism (Protestant sects) with government as savior by intervening in markets. Meat packing regulations and the Sugar Trust under Teddy Roosevelt, passed in June 1906. The myth was that the meat was diseased and people were dying of it. That was false. The big meat packers were asking for regulations because they wanted to sue their small competitors. The Pure Food and Drug Act was a prototype for the whole progressive movement toward purity of body, mind and soul. Adulteration only meant any change in the name of the sugar chemistry. those are not based beyond comparsion at all TR threatened to use troops to seize the mines and run them as a federal operation the history books likes to make you think hes based or that hes aa great guy hes not at all Another controversial aspect of Roosevelt 's presidency was his treatment of Native Americans . While he did establish national parks and protect some tribal lands , he also advocated for forced assimilation and the breaking up of reservations . This policy , known as the Dawes Act , had detrimental effects on Native American communities and their way of life .

1:06:30 I don't have to imagine. Last week I was at the bar, talking to some people. Was about 4 beers in, over the course of 5 hours. Then suddenly my memory jump cuts to me outside, walking down the side of the road, alone, covered in blood, with no memory of how I got there or what happened. I have a broken skull, memory loss, and cuts and bruises all over my body. It was like experiencing a movie jump cut. But in real life.

Glad Nick is working on a video about the 442/100th RCT. My late Grandparents and every Nisei relative were interned after 9066 was initiated. I hope he mentions the 100th from Hawaii. There was a great story about how the officers resolved the tensioned between the Hawaiians and Mainlanders. The 100th guys were upset at the 442 guys because they didn’t share their rations and other items with them, which was part of island culture and why they were sending a lot of stuff to their families. So the officers sent the 100th with the 442 guys to one of the internment camps. The Hawaiians were singing and playing instruments but once they arrived at the camp, saw the barbed wire, heavy machine guns pointed inward, and the harsh environment surrounding the camp that all stopped. It was then that they realized just what the mainlander 442 guys were fighting for. After that the unit immediately bonded. The rest was history. I’m always looking for more things to learn about them and learn from their actions that have my generation (Yonsei or 4th) the better life we had growing up. These guys are my heroes as an American. They weren’t Japanese Americans they were just Americans and that’s all they ever wanted and what they had to fight and die to earn back for everyone. A dark and great part of our American history.
