There are at least three shots in the color version where it's obviously water, may be where that rumour came from. I think they were gunna be cut completely but when the decision was made to go black and white, the water shots were added back to improve the flow of the scene.

The animated segment might be my favorite single scene from a movie. It's so brutally sad, but the beautiful music and fantastic animation makes it so moving and beautiful. It's like its own little short film that was set into the movie. The overall narrative doesn't really need it, but it's so fantastic nonetheless. It's funny you mention the song reminds you of Once upon a time in the West, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Same guy who made the music: Ennio Morricone.

But they're talking about a certain kind of sword and a real sword not a fake sword. Samurai swords are limited in the number that can be produced each year and even more limited to the number that's allowed to leave the country. I think there's a 10 year waiting list for swords allowed to leave Japan.

Kimono actually works well for Japanese swordfighting. You want to take small steps not lunging ones so youre always balanced. In films theres always these long battles with lots of sword clashing but in reality theres rarely more than a few strikes. They move thier feet until an opening is presented, then strike. Aposed to western sword fighting that makes lots of strikes to force an opening.

Wow...this disappeared so fast yesterday...I hope it stays up. LOL Also...in case nobody commented about it, the "son number one" bit 9:29 is an homage to Charlie Chan and that series of movies centered on the character, who often referred to his son and assistant that way. Also...any real katana would have a full tang...so the metal of the blade would go all the way to the end of the grip.

Yes you can buy a real samurai sword in Japan. Theyre at least $10k. But each sword maker is limited by the government in how many they can make each year and how many can be taken out of the country. I dont remember how many but I think theyre each limited to like maybe 10-15 made each year and maybe 10-15 total allowed to leave the country.

I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out, but this was meant to be one like 5 hour movie. Harvey Weinstein took a break from assaulting women just long enough to tell Tarantino he couldn't. These came out really close to each other, because they were already done and were split into two just for the release. Then I assume Weinstein resumed assaulting some woman who wanted to be in a Kevin Smith movie.

Actors can renegotiate their deals if the movie is split into multiple parts, regardless of when the decision is made. SAG contracts have a "Salkind clause", which was named for the Salkind brothers after they did not inform the actors and crew who signed for _The Three Musketeers_ (1973) that they intended to split the movie into _The Four Musketeers_ (1974) as well, leading to a number of lawsuits. One of my uni friends, V., knew Daryl Hannah from high school and synagogue. Hannah's step-uncle was a cinematographer, but she told V. that had nothing to do with being cast in Brian de Palma's _The Fury_ (1978) when she was 17. V. thought that was a bit fishy; she may not have asked, but she attended Hollywood parties and everyone knew she had connections in the biz. Who knows?
