Im from CANADA. My Grandfathers, father were both members of the L.O.L and played in L.O.L. Bands.I myself am a Retired Canadian Armed Forces drummer/bugler. I enjoy watching videos of Flute Bands but am curious why some bass drummers beat the bejesus out of the drum almost to point of busting out the head!! Is this a tradition in Flute Bands? Ive seen videos of some bands where a guy marching beside the bass drummer carrying a replacement just in case it does burst. Not a criticism just curious to know. CHEERS from the Colonies lol

Yes that is a tradition among the 'Blood & Thunder' genre of Flute Bands here in Northern Ireland and to answer your question the sides do 'go in' on many occasions during parades and they have to replace them on the side of the street and then reform and carry on. Sometimes more than one side can 'go in' on a night and the band would then borrow a spare side from another band at that parade (or on occasions borrow their bass drum if they have already finished parading)

It's when you see the bloodstained drumskins at the end o a parade you realise they really are making a statement with the big drum and they mean it ...... Still the best band IV ever seen on the road. They blew my mind in Southport a few years ago . No surrender FGAU
