Kikyo Meets Saint Hakushin

Фильм және анимация

This scene is from episode 120 of the anime Inuyasha, and its English dub name is "Fare Thee Well: Jakotsu's Requiem".
I do not own Inuyasha. This is for others' viewing pleasure only.

“Everyone wishes to be saved” … Buddha taught that we are our own salvation. Often times, compassion is hardest to give onto ourselves. So simple, but at the same time the hardest truth to grasp, and accept. Thank you Kikyo for reminding me of the Dharma.

This scene illustrates that no matter how far one falls , no natter what lies we tell ourselves , no matter how far or fast one runs , there lay buried to our very core what it is to be human. A willing heart to make a single choice that could save or destroy. To make a conscious decision that effects an outcome.

She is the one character whom I truly felt sorry for. She had come to love, only to have it stripped form her. She had come to accept a demon as a lover, only to be killed by one. She had come to accept herself as a woman, only to be destroyed. She had been truly been alive only to die. Now she was resurrected and forced to travel to all places, a person who is neither living or dead. Unable to love, unable to live a life of a woman, unable to live. She knows what she has lost...and goes through lengths to ensure others don't lose it....yet she does not try to regain what she has lost. A tragic woman...........

Kikyo was only 18 years old when she died, but she was so wise. Has she ever been truly happy? Since she was young her priority was to protect the jewel, to be a pure miko. She never lived a normal life, but finally she fell in love with Inuyasha, a hanyo who was detested by both humans and demons. She wanted to use the jewel so she could live a normal life with Inuyasha, but she was killed by Naraku, the sinner whom she saved, and believed that Inuyasha was her murderer. Years later she was forcefully resurrected as an impure being. She, who sacrificed the privilege to live a normal life, was resurrected as a walking corpse with vengeance. Not only that, but she also found out that her love rival was her own reincarnation and Inuyasha wasn't her murderer. But despite all the shits she went through, Kikyo forgives. She doesn't hold any grudge and was finally able to be in peace, with death. Shikonotama never granted Kikyo's wish. Inuyasha didn't end up with her. But that was enough.

One of Kikyo's best scenes tbh. She doesn't come to Hakushin holier than thou--she comes with empathy and compassion--and awareness that no one can truly save your souk--except yourself. Her character is fantastic...more than any other of the characters in this anime, she evolves again and again...a pure hearted but naive and lonely miko, to bitter angry vengeful spirit, to neutral ally for both Naraku and the Inutachi, to compassionate woman aiming to still do good in the world, to once again, connecting to who she once was, the pure hearted--but now much wiser miko once in Inuyasha's arms. Her true death was beautiful in so many ways--she literally transcended her pain--as she dies, she even passes over Kagome as if to return the part of their shared soul she was resurrected with.

Although she herself is a side character with limited screentime, not everything about her is directly tied to Inuyasha.

Mazin It’s not true that his story didn’t exist until their interaction. His story was exposed through Miroku and Sango, not Kikyo, and therefore existed before this scene. I do agree that his character added development to Kikyo. However the more important purpose was to display background on his character and add depth to Naraku. Through this scene viewers can finally understand what caused a pure powerful priest like him to turn completely evil. They can further understand the extent Naraku will go to manipulate others and brainwash even powerful pure priests such as this living Buddha, as well as how powerful Naraku actually is. Most importantly, it shows the tragedy the priest went through despite devoting himself to other humans, and this is critical because he was a central antagonist for the past few episodes. This scene was supposed to be about Hakushin, not Kikyo.

Child of The Moon (Official Channel),why? Kagome has helped by protecting Inuyasha with her life as he always did for Kagome. I believe, though Kagome was always sad from her own jealousy;she soon realized that she was just as good,as an ally that she had considered herself,as much as they both loved Inuyasha.Refer to the next series,in The Final Act;when Kikyo accepted the after-life,and died in Inuyasha's arms.I believe those were tears of joy, coming from Kikyo, knowing he did change, but in a very good way.And not only Inuyasha, but also Kagome cried for Kikyo.A Cherokee-Indian proverb says;"If humanity wasn't capable to shed tears, there would also be no Rainbow."

I get Kagome, but she’s still frustrating. Kikyō purposely distances herself and refused to get back together with Inuyasha after her revival because she is merely a clay body surviving off dead souls, but Kagome is so insecure about her relationship with Inuyasha that she whines about Kikyo constantly when it is almost always Inuyasha that goes to her. These feels are normal, but Kikyo is a beautiful, complex soul and she wasn’t a threat to their relationship. Kikyo is so strong that she realized shortly after her revival that her existence is only temporary and that she has lost Inuyasha. It breaks my heart that Kikyo goes through so much anguish and heartbreak and just keeps it to herself for the most part.

Only matured people can love kikyo. Sure, After rewatch inuyasha from episode 1 to end. I came to a conclusion. Kikyo life is very tragic. Since, first time i watch inuyasha. i was like 9 Years old. And i always hate kikyo back before. i thinks she likes a villain.. But after like 10 years. i rewatch inuyasha. and get a different perspective. After become matured person. I came to a conclusion and i like kikyo more than ever. No hate to kagome though. I like she also. but kikyo is different level for me. For 18 years old women. I see kikyo is one of the most matured women in anime. And after seeing her death in Final Act Eps. 8. I shred tears for the first fucking time. Never before i crying for watching Anime/TV Series/Movies and so on. Her death is so tragic. So sad. And for you guys thinks she is villain. Remember she is already died. Her soul was just part of kagome soul. with only hatred and vegeance. but she still can get the job done. He care inuyasha too. never abuse him like kagome. i am talking before kikyo dead. My favorite kikyo qoutes is. "At last i become an ordinary woman"... She is human after all. and in her life, she cant act like a normal women. Kikyo character complexcity is for matured people. Because after we matured enough. we can see things from different perspective. No hate to kagome though. i like her too. But my favorite is kikyo. Sorry for my bad english. I totally agree. As a kid, I used to prefer Kagome over Kikyo, since I was at the age when I could relate with Kagome's personality and lifestyle. Years later, I rewatched the entire show, and now I come to love Kikyo as a character. I understand her on a different level and appreciate her better. Also, off topic. Naraku at some point is curious why Kikyo gave him the jewel shards, instead of getting her revenge. It might just be me, but I think she got her best revenge just from doing that. So she proves not only to be wise, but also very cunning and smart. Which is what I really like about her. Have a great day!

So was it kagoma being mean or kikyo??? Both?? You say only mature people can love kikyo?? But people can love Kagome just as well. SHe gave kikyo peace at the end and Kikyo help her with her own evil. It was perfect. But that my opinion. BTW I hated kikyo in the beginning. But after rewatching it. I see she was just a woman trying to fight for the life she always. wanted. BUT I also saw kagome grow into a Kind and pure woman. It all came full circle.

@4EverGamer X Well you gotta remember that the Kikyo who came back was a ghost imbued with hatred and anger as that was the hanyo witch's plan when she brought her back which is why the spirit hated Inuyasha. But the longer the ghost walked the plane of the living, she started regaining bits and pieces of her life and the hatred/anger started to subside because at the end of the day, that was not who Kikyo was.

  • @dangokissu
    @dangokissu3 жыл бұрын

She’s died 3 times and Inuyasha had to watch her die 3 times. Honestly, Kikyo’s story is the most tragic so I understand why she was full of hatred in the beginning and everyone thinks she’s toxic. Personally, I sympathize with Kikyo. She was in love. She was “betrayed”. She died still consumed in hatred. She’s resurrected against her will and sees the man who “betrayed” her with a new girl. I’d be bitter as hell too. The reason why we see Kikyo being torn between a villain and a good person is because: she’s a complex character. Probably the most complex character in the series. And I appreciate complex characters. I know her jealousy was dragged on a lot but nobody ever attacks Inuyasha for literally running after her all the time. They just attack the woman and not the man who is pursuing her. Not saying Inuyasha is a cheater but he too, was struggling with his feelings. Just like Kikyo. So that double standard always bothered me. Nonetheless, if you watch other scenes where it’s just her interacting with other villagers, she can be very kind hearted. The Mt. Hakurei arc really showed us how kind she is. There’s a scene where Kikyo meets Monk Hakushin for the first time and it’s so beautiful. Her speech to him, the way she ended his long suffering, and helped him pass in peace?? Underrated. I think a lot of ppl gloss over that scene. Not to mention, she really redeemed herself in The Final Act. Even after her death, she was able to save Kohaku and literally everyone. She’s the reason why Kohaku is alive. She gave up the only way to kill Naraku because she knew, the right choice was to save Kohaku. Truly a unique, complex character I had the pleasure of growing up with. I truly miss her. Even though I don’t ship her with Inuyasha, they were still each other’s first love. I could feel the years of pain through that last kiss. I’m just glad they were able to have closure and she was sent off with love. This is why I don’t like Kikyo slander. I just have a soft spot for her. I hope ppl can understand her a bit more.

Well, it wouldn’t also make sense for people to attack the man in this situation. I don’t think anyone should be attacking inuyasha as well since most of the time inuyasha wanted to make sure if kikyo was okay. Unless people had an issue with sango leaving in the middle of the battle (or before a battle) to catch up to kohaku, then people shouldn’t shit on inuyasha for doing the same. If anything, it seems like people who mainly attack kikyo, and to an extent inuyasha, are a) projecting their insecurities from failed relationships onto him so they empathize with kagome b) kagome and inuyasha shippers and c) bandwagon hate/ or just purely dislike kikyo.

I can't imagine why Kikyo has so many haters. I think only children hate her. When you are matured you start to understand the depth of her character. She was so pure. But sometimes pure is impure. Yes she did some bad things after being resurrected. Everything had a reason. She always tried to be that pure & perfect woman. But when she met Inuyasha she tried to have a normal life. But her own goodness killed her eventually. (Saving Onigumo). Her dying wish was to meet Inuyasha one more time. I think the jewel granted her wish but through Kagome. Kagome's life was the one that Kikyo always wished for. A woman who can live happily & love freely. They are two different people but they share the same soul. Inuyasha fell for that soul once again. He always loved Kagome as a person. Not because she's Kikyo's reincarnation. That is the point where Kikyo thinks that the jewel didn't granted her wish. Actually the jewel is made of good and evil equally. Even the human heart is so. The wish was granted in two ways. One was resurrection of Kikyo and meeting Inuyasha once again & the other was her reincarnation coming from the future to fall in love with Inuyasha from step one so they can live happily without making the same old mistakes.

Ahhwww Man.. I was sobbing so deeply when I first saw this segment. It had such an effect with me, because I had lost my brother to himself, but he was such a genuine good guy. Somehow, I had connected the situations together. But the statement of how she said, "Everyone has felt lost. And everybody wants to be saved.. Both the good and the bad folks within society. --- AND THEN, here the trick to letting "His Soul Free" was merely to ALLOW himself to stop 'Damning' himself' so to speak. ..."Is that alright?" he says. I cried and cried.. idk... still, with what I said, I STILL don't hit the magnitude of how I felt it.. (Please avoid any negative comments towards; the loss of my brother. Please. thx) (K.I.T.Y. -Keep It To Yourself..lol... thx)

Kikyo's whole character is tragic and this scene exemplifies that perfectly. From meeting another of the living dead, and resting the soul, we can see that is something that Kikyo does not offer to herself. She's done more than enough good in the world, yet she continues to walk the Earth. It isn't until we get into the Final Act that she finally sees Kagome's and Inuyasha's strength and resolve to finally leave everything up to them and become an ordinary woman. To be honest, sometimes I think Kikyo's character is a bit forced...for the sake of developing the story (giving the jewel fragments to Naraku or encountering the discarded part of Naraku and not realizing he's trying to get rid of his heart when he suddenly vanishes, or heck missing an arrow on a person who is not even moving LOL), but her overall story is so beautiful and tragic.

Reading your comment made me realize that the reason Kagome feels like Kikyo is always trying to test her is because she is, in a way. She wants Kagome’s heart and spiritual powers to become stronger so she can leave it up to her and Inuyasha, and she can rest in peace. She was never fighting to have Inuyasha to herself (except at the beginning, before she knew about Naraku) even if she felt jealousy, because she didn’t want to be revived to begin with. She always knew she had to return to the land of the dead. When Kagome was able to overcome her illusion of Kikyo on Mt. Azusa and obtain the bow to save her, and when Kikyo saw the strength of her heart, she felt like she could die as an ordinary woman and leave it up to them. That’s why she said to Kagome “don’t cry, my soul was saved.” That’s probably also when she decided to save Kohaku’s life over using the light in his shard to destroy Naraku, too. I feel like in an alternate universe, Kikyo could be Kagome’s mentor - like that one time she had a vision of Kikyo being her senpai at archery club. Because once you see it outside of the love triangle, that’s really what their relationship is. I would love to see an AU like that.

I will admit that Kikyo is an amazing woman, but since she was born with spiritual powers it would have been difficult for her to be a normal woman and even if the shinkon jewel wasn't around and she never met InuYasha she would have stayed a priestess and not go through all that torment. And I think for Kikyo once a priestess always a priestess, but I could be wrong.

Aaahh the absolute tragedy that is kikyo and the people she met on her far too short journey are really worth of its own show tbh. She is my absolute fave, and the fact that she got so much hate by kagome fans, childish hate if I might add, even though kagome is the one that's alive and with inuyasha, while kikyo is just a walking tragedy, is just adding to her tragic story. Aaahhh my heart aches for her ever since I first saw the anime. Even though my three year younger brother and I were just kids, we could sense the absolute sadness surrounding kikyo, everyone else that was just focussed on the love triangle really missed the point of the anime and quite frankly of life itself, not everything only revolves around love stories and ships, I feel sorry for those people. Now speaking of those ships, everyone that is a true kikyo fan will want kagome and inuyasha to end up together, it just shows that inuyasha and kagome are the definition of SOULmates. Be this soul within kikyo or kagome or maybe even a third person or if inuyasha would have been reborn a completely new couple, doesn't really matter, their souls find each other; soulmates. What an absolut masterpiece. And people still out there thinking you have to be rooting for one or the other, again missing the point...
