The record of a trip to the Amami Islands in late March 2024 is now available.
In this fifth edition, we report on our journey from Naze Port on Amami Oshima to Kikai Island, where we visited Aden village, famous for its coral stone walls, and other places.
● Kikai Island belongs to Kikai-cho, Oshima-gun, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is home to just under 7,000 people.
The island is said to have emerged from the seabed an estimated 120,000 years ago due to the uplift of coral reefs, and even now, due to the influence of the Philippine Sea Plate, it is said to continue to rise by about 2 mm per year.
In the Amami Islands, along with Yoronjima and Okinoerabujima, it is known as an island where poisonous habu (habu) do not live, and in Amami Oshima and other islands, the stone walls are being removed as a measure against habu, but in Kikaijima, it is common to see them remaining as they were.
The trip to the Amami Archipelago was coming to an end and we decided to cross over to Kikai Island, our final destination. The original plan was to take the ferry from Koniya, but due to a mistake in the booking date, we had to return to Nase and board the ferry from Nase Port.
Also, we were only supposed to stay on Kikai Island for one day, but due to equipment problems on the ferry, we had to stay another night, which was an ideal itinerary for me personally. We bought our meals at a local supermarket, but there were signs posted all over the shop saying 'No ferry service today', which was an impressive sight and made us realise that we were on an isolated island far from the mainland.
