Public school parents to homeschool parents: They don’t get enough socialization! Teachers: You are not here to socialize, you here to learn. Now sit down and shut up or you will get silent lunch. Administration at schools: You must be silent in the hallway at all times. You only get 45 minutes of recess and lunch combined.

I'm not homeschooled and went to regular school and what's ironic is that the friends that I actually consider real friends are those I made outside of school, and aren't even my age. Instead in school I've had fake friends, been bullied, some crazy amounts of stress that was really bad for my health, and the constant pressure of 'fitting-in' and being 'normal'. Moreover school is a complete creativity killer and I never had time for my own projects, like art and game development. Anyways all of this to say that if I have kids I'm definitely considering home schooling them.

Same here I ll homeschool from the beginning.. To be honest 5-6 year olds don't need homework play base just learn 📕 math & language arts, crafts, music, getting dirty in the dirt, learn 📕 to ride a bike, play in the sand box, juice & snack break, going to the park be done by lunch time, coloring, sports, 4H scouts, co ups meeting other homeschooling groups, I ll stay away clquish families 👪 I ll not associate with them nope 🙅. My feature kids ll be autstict ADHD BUPOLAR OR OCD. Dyslexia or math disablity handwriting issues low muscle tone. I don't want their childhood taken from me like I had with me.

yes definitely. i strongly recommend looking into Montessori the approach developed over a 100 years is far more healthy in a class of mixed age kids walking around choosing prepared activities from the prepared environment according to their development with the extended amount of time they can use and resuse real materials on thier own or somtimes with others if it is something that naturally occurs and the peaceful reaward or punishments free approach without grading or at least without being told about any observations the guides make on you and adjust their difficulty as you progress naturally through mastering the skills gradually. its so cool its what i would have chosen if we had a Montessori school breast us but now I'm going to continue to implement it at home with my toddler instead of sending her into these damaging schools aound us. there's a forest school that does one or two days a week outside in nature for 5 to 11 year olds who are home educated too but those schools follow the Scandinavian approach and would definitely be a healthy fulfilling option if you had one near you too. there's a series on here called Montessori at home by Ashley from hapa family. that was how i found out about Maria Montessori who was nominated 3 times for a nobel prize for her research and most of the healthier parts of school are based on her findings. hope this helps anyone in the future or now.

My oldest two are in public school because their dad demanded it. I’m remarried and my youngest kids dad is fully supportive of homeschooling our three younger kids. The oldest two are not only BEHIND my youngest kids’ academically who are homeschooled, but they’re worse off socially. My youngest are more healthily socialized. My oldest two in public school can’t even so much as pass notes to other people in the seven hours they’re stuck behind four closed walls, or they get in big trouble. One teacher screams at the students if they “socialize.” They then make a beeline to the bus, where it’s so loud with screaming kids they still can’t “socialize.” A person asking about homeschoolers socializing are projecting, plain and simple. They have to ask that because they feel guilt and they are forcing their own insecurities about their public schooled kid on to us.

We also have a large family, so they hang out with cousins and meet friends of family members and other friends, as well. You know, the friend-of-a-friend thing. Not sure how old you are, but if you're struggling to meet new people and make new friends, I would suggest just practicing being outgoing (this coming from a natural introvert who was public schooled and had almost no real friends, just acquaintances), and finding a charity you like where you can meet like-minded people and volunteer there, or get a job (but like public school, you have no control over who you interact with there 😄).

I'm autistic. The forced socialization of going to a school, I believe, did a lot of damage. I never had any trouble with learning but I had a lot of other problems with the school environment. Having to deal with strangers and pretend to be "normal" every single day because I knew people there weren't familiar enough with my issues to understand me, having my anxiety misinterpreted as disobedience and/or manipulation, I was bullied by other kids AND by some of my teachers. I would have been much better off homeschooled and allowed to socialize at my church instead... I socialized better there because there were less kids and people who knew me and loved me as I was. I would have been just fine.

I agree. I was never homeschooled myself but my closest friends and the friendships I’ve maintained into my thirties were mostly with the neighbourhood kids. I also had a lot of homeschooled friends and they were fun to be around because they were very down to earth. Surprisingly, I’ve made this same point regarding “homeschooled socialization” with friends who are teachers. It should be said that when educators mention socialization they don’t mean social skills. They mean it in terms of the psychological term. Will your child know how to sit still in a desk, not talk unless they raise their hand, not talk when the teacher is talking etc. But they don’t understand that homeschooled children still do summer camps and a variety of classes where they can pick up on these norms rather quickly.

We’d rather our kids be “undersocialized” than poorly socialized. I’ve seen what the public schools are like. Too many of the kids are depressed, aggressive, self-centered and overall poor influences who no stable person who want to socialize with every day. Their issues spread like social contagion, too. Every homeschool family we’ve met has sweet, happy, well-spoken kids. It made a big impact on us choosing to homeschool in the future.

I d’ not come out for 15 min I didn't know my anxiety disorder & PTSD was going bonkers. That's nearing 13 years ago. My now boyfriend didn't know why the door was locked 🔑 he thought his boy cousins pranked him of doing that his girl cousin now 29 years old. Knocked on the door like u ok 👌? & her cousin now over 29/1/2 years old. I opened the door shaking & sobbbing like crazy I lost my grandad 4 months that time. I was actually throwing my phone on the floor. The memory of being yelled at. They told me it's ok Jessica we re” not the people from that school. They were still 16 at the time. My now boyfriend was like what's going on they explained to him I was having a really bad flash backs. That's was February 20th 2010. I was a public school student my entire life that wished I was homeschooled due to having a tough time. My High School and Middle School had a reputation of being unfriendlier than average. It was IMPOSSIBLE to make friends, I was alone all of the time for 4 years. I just knew public schooling wouldn't be the right option for me because I wouldn't be making friends anyways due to my "damaged" reputation. However, my homeschooled friends I've met at random places were always friendlier, more socially skilled, and mature than others. Now im a young adult who's social skills are probably stuck in 8th grade. Not bad, but not quite at an ideal proficient level for an adult. Nothing was ever wrong with me, completely normal child. I have a very active social life without even having to walk out the door, whereas some homeschooled people don't have that. As a former public school kid, now homeschool kid, I went from being an extroverted social butterfly to being an introverted kid with social anxiety. Sure, my best and last friend abandoning me last minute probably had something to do with that, but when it comes to a preteen/teenager, this stuff can be harder for them. For example, my cousin who is 8 is still thriving. She's young, and finds it easy to make friends her age. But when you get to the point of getting to my age, (currently 13,) it can be very hard to socialize. Even if kids this age don't have social anxiety like I do, we're awkward-- trying to 'be cool' and such. Although I don't believe that every homeschooled kid lacks socialization, some of them will, especially after experiencing a series of events that can lead to anxiety, social anxiety, and similar things, from switching lifestyles entirely. In my opinion, it's a fair assumption for people to make.

@@Auraliight This is why I'm adamant that my children speak for themselves whenever they want or need something from someone else. I taught them from about age 5 or 6 to order their own drinks and food from a restaurant (and of course to say please and thank you). If they need to go to the bathroom when we're out and I don't know where it is, I have them go ask someone who works there. If they have a problem with a friend or family member, I let them speak it. I tell them that these are their feelings and their needs, and they need to know how to speak them. I'll stand by their side if they need me to, but I always let them speak for themselves. My children are incredibly well adapted to all sorts of situations because of this. I am very proud of them for this, and so many other reasons.

May I ask, how long were you in public school? Also, do you think it would have been a different outcome if you had always been homeschooled and hadn't had the influence of public school on you? I ask because I have an 11 year old and an almost 8 year old. We've always homeschooled, and I don't see the slightest bit of the need to be "cool" coming from them. They don't worry at all about fitting in because they've never been in a world where people expected that. They are very comfortable with who they are and all of their friends are too. I went to public school my whole life, and I remember that need to feel "cool." I remember that it took a toll on me. But we've made it a point to let our kids know that there's no such thing as a "cool kid." I don't know if you've heard the song "Cool Kids" by Echosmith, but we play that often, and both of my kids know the meaning of it and can see right through the idea of "being cool."

I homeschool my 12 year old autistic son and have childhood friends who homeschooler their kids (all of widely varied ages) and I’ve noticed that they are WAY more observant, respectful to EVERYONE around them especially their elders, and seem to be more reserved and well behaved over all. I think this comes from the parents being with them a lot and being on top of their kids behavior so that they can put the kabash on any bad behavior on the spot. The parents and kids communicate with each other better, boost their child’s confidence, and have better relationships with them because of it as a family unit.

I don’t think homeschooling takes away your social skills but school with other kids teaches you how to regulate and deal with the cons of life. As someone who has never been homeschooled I have learned important skills. I became aware that in life you might not like your surroundings but if you want to get to where you wanna go then you have to deal with ups and downs. Like you said, your homeschooled child gets to choose where they wanna be because they’re not stuck in an actual school but the sometimes being STUCK is the key to learn how to make lemons into lemonade. School with other people teaches you that life won’t always benefit you in ways but if you can see your goal you can deal with obstacles.

Actually.... I was homeschooled and am now struggling with socialization in my adult life. Socializing with people who you DON'T choose is extremely important in that it teaches you to get along with folks who you wouldn't choose. Adults have to do this with coworkers, family, neighbors, etc., All the time! So please, if you're going to homeschool, still put your kids in consistent socialization similar to what public schooled kids experience. I constantly feel like an outsider because I had such a different childhood from my peers. Also having authority figures other than your parents (like teachers, coaches, guidance counselors) prepares you for working under people you're not related to i.e. your boss. It also gives a child someone to go to if their parents aren't providing all the emotional support they need, this is especially important for teenagers who often struggle to talk to their parents. Sorry for the long winded comment. I hope you consider what I had to say!

I’m sorry your experience caused you to struggle in adult life, Faith. Like I said in the video, the majority of the time my kids get to choose who they want to be with, but other times we are in situations where they interact with people we just come into contact with. This is a really short video, so it doesn’t explain that homeschooled kids still have opportunities to be with people they don’t choose, and work under coaches, other teachers, and authority figures other than their parents. I actually share a lot about our socialization journey as a family in my latest video on my channel if you care to watch.

Perhaps, you just think you've missed out on much, because you haven't experienced public schooling and early formal education. Public schools and formal education aren't all that when it comes to socializing. Even more, it can have a major negative effect on people ability to socialize. I've been to public school, and I've been through standard formal education. I still face difficulty socializing and I constantly feel like an outsider. In fact, I've become less social compared to how i was pre-school. It killed my vibe and my soul. I've also developed self esteem issues. I stopped having hobbies and the things i used to enjoy doing. That's why i think there's a personality and psychological component to socializing that is not related to going to public school. Also, people socialize better when they're not bored or it's something they enjoy. Formal education and public school is not fun, you're being taught by people who are apathetic to you, they're paid to care about you and can't even fake it. At least from my experience and the people i know. Public school is mighty boring and soul crushing. I think of a few things that could help socializing with results better than relying on public school. Such as attending events you enjoy, joining sports and activities of interest.

@@AAMM101 100% on point! I was never homeschooled, but always wished I could've been. I'm a social person & don't get me wrong, I made some of the best relationships while attending public school (including meeting my husband) but I honestly hated school so much. Once I graduated HS & went out on my own, I realized that I actually loved to learn new things. I discovered that I'm not as dumb as I thought I was... I was just miserable in the public school learning environment. I didn't learn well in that environment. Public school doesn't even teach you some of the most important life skills anyway. Our system seriously sucks & is only getting worse by each generation. I have researched a lot about homeschooling & I 100% plan on homeschooling our daughter. School is not just about socialising. The world is full of people we will not agree with, people we don't like and in school (with the help of you're patents) you can learn to deal with emotions that are not nice. It's not cool to have to just learn to cope with bullying when you start a job, by that time you should know how to handle such things. Also; when you're parents choose whom you can see, it opens the possibility of being manipulated like in a cult and so on.
