Way back then a black lady and two white children weren't even allowed to look at each other or sit down to have a conversation like this one. Now thanks to them we can live next to who we want, talk to who we want, play with who we want without any consequences. Change. Something that can only occur if you truly want it to. This was amazing

@Provocateur this is true. However i feel the real reason black people can't rise together is because we are so quick to test one another down first. The black Panthers weren't the only ones who fought for the freedom of black people but they sure did play a massive roll

@@sassybelle8599 Yeah, but in the US, if you make under a certain amount that would consider you to be even lower middle class, you still get financial aid. It differs by state, but it works the same way. For example, Medicaid is free healthcare for people who _really_ can't afford it, but PeachCare (has different names for every state, that's the one for Georgia) gives healthcare to children who are in the predicament you described exactly. “PeachCare for Kids provides comprehensive health care to children through the age of 18 who do not qualify for Medicaid and live in households with incomes at or below 235% of the federal poverty level. This means a family of three can earn $43,029 a year and a family of four can earn $51,818 a year.” They just discount it for adults, I'm sure.

The FBI agent was in black panther territory so he most definitely had to pretend to be friendly at least lol, but he was playing a role to get inside information. So he probably pretended to be the most loyal person ever but everything that the Black Panther did the FBI agent knew about. That’s scary because how many targets and arrest and death scares were because of this body guard. Crazy thing is he got away with it.

Chicago Panther Fred Hampton got killed partially because one of his bodyguards worked for the FBI. As far as I’m aware they never suspected him to be a traitor. In the 80s or 90s that guy committed suicide, because he couldn’t cope with it.

The education system should broaden their horizons about black leaders other than MLK and X. There should especially be more conversation about the female race leaders. The Black Panther Party was monumental for black communities and it should also be noted that a lot of made the Party what is was and what we know of it today was because of the work of Panther women. BPP was generally not gender inclusive.

tia griffin I completely agree. My daughters school hasn’t even recognized black history month. She had the chance to do a slide show in any subject so she decided to do it on the BPP. It’s disappointing to me that still in 2019 we still are not being brought up enough in history.

Really wierd to see people say they didn't get taught about black panthers. I'm from the UK and we learnt about MLK, Malcolm X and the black panthers all in the same term. In fairly sure we had to write an opinion piece about the methods of the different approaches to institutionalised racism and civil rights.

American here! This is really interesting to see the contrast of what and how we were taught. In pre-college school the only time I was taught about the BPP was in 11th grade, I think that's the equivalent to year 12 for y'all but I'm not sure. We didn't learn very much about it, I had absolutely no idea about any of the social work/reform that BPP did-- what I remember being taught was a few paragraphs of information about it. I was first taught about Dr. MLK I think in first grade (year 2 for y'all? idk) and he was mentioned and we learned about him multiple times throughout the years. Interestingly, we learned about him mainly in the context of the civil rights movement directly related to racial inequality -- the "I Have A Dream" speech, circumstances around that, "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" (which I highly recommend reading). I had no idea until recently that Dr. King was also involved in marching against poverty! It's only been recently that I've realized how little I know about Dr. King and the work he did, and the different facets of the Civil Rights Movement. I learned briefly about Malcom X in 11th grade, but due to the way the content was structured (not the teacher's fault) we couldn't spend very much time on him at all. I'm starting to educate myself, but honestly I think that the public school system (at least where I live, I think content and requirements can vary from state to state unless it's a AP/IB/Cambridge/etc class) needs to do a better job. Black history is history, and should be taught in schools, not as an afterthought or only in February, but as the important history it is.

In the comments I often read that students never learned about the black panthers at school. I’m shocked. In Germany, this is part of 9th grade English classes. We learn about Dr. King, the civil rights movement, Rosa parks etc.

Okay so some people say that they hadn’t known the Black Panthers before because it wasn’t talked about in school...but can’t you get informed about your history on your own? Yes, schools should teach it, still you have to have some interest as well and don’t just blame it on school education. I’m from Germany and we talked about it in 11th grade but most students already knew sth about it. You have to know these things about your country especially when already being an adult.

VeganQueen read books, watch movies just gain knowledge and I promise you well- informed people do know about the Black Panthers. You don’t have to particularly search for that but just generally at least get to know your country‘s history and everything around it. I feel like there are many Americans that only know about their own sub- groups and not about other countries or the past.
