Kidney Support - Homemade Dog Food Recipes by The Dog Nutritionist

Low protein diets are wrong, it's a way to sell terrible quality and generic "one size fits all" diet to an issue that requires quality fresh foods.
For more information on the topic, please read my blog article here:
www.thedognutritionist.com/bl...
The kidneys, along with all other areas of your dog's health requires protein, and restriction is not recommended unless your dog is late stage 3 and above.

Has anyone tried this diet and then monitored blood kidney function markers to see if they improve, stay the same or get worse? I took my cat off his prescription renal diet and put him on a whole food high quality meat diet but within 6 months his kidney disease had progressed and he wasn’t doing very well. My dog now has kidney disease as well as possible pancreatitis and Addison’s disease and as much as I would love her to have a fresh whole food diet I’m scared it’s going to get worse. I know the prescription kidney diets are highly processed but they really do seem to slow progression, I just want my dog to live as long as possible and feel as good as she can. It’s so confusing when there is so much conflicting information out there :(

A month and a half ago we were told our 14 yr old dog was in late stage 4 KD and probably wouldn’t make it thru the weekend, she had had two day treatments at vets of iv fluids, she’s always had issues with her numbers, about 7 yrs. Her numbers were thru the roof, but I believe it was due to the gabapentin they had us give her for a procedure she was supposed to have but never did, she’s always taken days to get over shots or certain downers she’s had to take, the wife and I weren’t ready to go “that” route, we took her home and decided we had to get food into her, she hadn’t eaten anything in about 5 days I blended up blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, cucumber, spinach and some sweet potatoes, with some water I fed her via a syringe, 80ml 3 times a day, along with her nausea meds and Entyce(evening only) I did the same thing with boiled chicken, low sodium chicken broth, tblsp of freeze dried green tripe She wasn’t eating anything on her own, she was weak, lethargic We did this for a month and a half, along with Subq fluids at home Her numbers have dropped drastically, (bun was at 144, now it’s 88) still a bit higher than they should be but nowhere near what they were She’s starting to actually eat on her own SOMETIMES, but not like she should be Originally our vet said she was late stage 2, then it turned into late stage 4 within days, were making another appointment for more blood work and I’ll be curious to know what stage their going to tell us now……I honestly don’t think they even know I’m just looking for the exact foods I should be giving her, so I’m really glad I found this channel

We got her tested Monday and are waiting on results We’ve started her on Phos-Bind to get phosphorus levels down, once that’s down we can start her on calcitriol to lower her calcium levels which had gone up a bit, but that’s only if they haven’t gone down in the latest bloodwork

Received bloodwork yesterday Bella’s Bun is down from 88 to 74 Still on high side but still an improvement, actually all of her numbers have lowered Creatine- 2.3(from 3.8) Phos- 5.3(from 10) So thankfully good improvements Again, we know KD is NOT reversible, but nevertheless we will continue to do everything possible to make whatever time we have left as amazing as possible She’s also starting to eat a bit more on her own, still syringe feeding any medications she needs though

I tried my Shih-tzu, who also has a bunch of bladder stones, on all the different prescription meds recommended by my vet, she snubbed her nose in disgust at all of them, even when I didn’t feed her anything else she would not eat it. I have done this recipe myself and she loves it. I also use some carrots and broccoli at times.

Just wanted to share that I've tried a variation of this recipe on my beagle with stage 1 kidney disease for 17 days. The variation includes just using pork liver instead of venison liver as well as mango instead of blueberries (as they are also a good source of antioxidants and are more readily available where I live). I kept all the ratios the same, though it is weird how they add up to >100%. I have also monitored my dog's Creatinine (CREA) levels with the vet at the start and end of this diet. The results are as follows: 3.3 mg/dL (day 0) and 5.48 mg/dL (day 17). At least for my dog, this diet was shown to make her kidney disease worse as indicated by a 66% increase in CREA levels over this short span of time. So I would advise to take this recipe/guide with a grain of salt (sorry for the pun) and consult with your vet before switching your dog's diet. Or at least just monitor your dog's CREA levels often when trying out a diet like this to make sure it doesn't have any negative impacts.

My dog's experience with the dog food is as follows: I transitioned my dog to the new diet over a few days. She loved the new dog food immediately. She ate every single bit we gave her at first. She definitely preferred it over Royal Canin Renal. This really made me happy because she is such a picky eater. Her stool was also pretty much normal. However, after a few days, she began picking out the meats from the veg, though I still made sure she ate everything she needed day-to-day. Nearer to the end of the 17 days I noticed that she became very lethargic. She also started vomiting and had blood in her stool. At that point, I knew something was wrong and decided to get her retested. I initially wanted to try out this diet for a month before testing again though I didn't expect her health to turn bad so quickly. I want to note though that the only variable I changed was her diet. Also that by the end of the 17 days, she did not want to even go near the new food anymore. Again this is just me sharing my experience with it so my intention is not to discredit anyone.

Hi there, results on a given day can vary due to many factors like levels of hydration and stress. We recommend two months on the diet for it to take effect. This diet has helped thousands of dogs, and whilst every dog is different, we still think you should give it a little longer. We'd recommend introducing something to increase hydration and give the diet another month. It's fantastic you're monitoring so closely.

My cat was 14 years and 9 months when he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, at 15.5 years he died peacefully. And of course the vet told me he *needed* to eat his kibble and put me on Hill's, I bought a bag not because I believed in the product but because I had nothing else I could do for him. But she couldn't tell me why corn meal kibble was going to be good for him, only that "it was specially formulated that way". It really alarmed me when I was told he got his disease "too late in life" after giving me the stink eye for having him on raw for the vast majority of his life, they even checked his age THREE TIMES because his teeth were too white and perfect for his age.

My old cat never ate the kibble and I was able to nurse him to the finish line of life, same for our previous animals (our other cat died at 19 years and our dog lived to double his expected age).
