Being in my 20s, trying desperately to find a way to forget the past because I didn't want it to define me...but it was. Working 8-10 hour days waiting tables, spending it all at a bar my friend worked at with my buddy (I apparently still owe him money), brass rails, black and white tile floor that would begin to spin after the first hour of drinking and laughing. Sitting in my car, having a smoke trying to sober up to go home knowing damn well I shouldn't drive. I'm ashamed of the times I did. Getting home still laughing about something stupid said. The laughter slowly dies down and I'm just left with deafening silence and nothingness. The dark still scares me. Bad things happen in the dark. You can arm yourself, stay hyper-vigilant, and try to prevent as much as you can, but they happen anyways. Lock the door, knees to chest crying. Beer I bought on the way home growing room temp. The tears yet to fall from my eyes make everything glitter. I look in the mirror- she's staring back at me again with her running mascara and wind-matted hair. This is who I am at night, this is the image of youth and fun. I'm just trying to have a good time. I'll worry about the consequences tomorrow. Nothing else matters in this moment except that I am happy- ecstatic even. I see her smile at me. Cheers, bitch.
