And I thought Peg was ridiculous. Bass solo with Steely Dan accompanying him. Mr. Rainey's feel and phrasing are unbelievable. A master

I've got this somewhere.. ending up adding a muted guitar overdubbing the bass, sort of a Kid Charlemagne meets Peter Gunn (speaking of which you need to hear the arrangement of Peter Gunn on Mancini's 1975 album, Symphonic Soul ft. the great Abraham Laboriel). Back to this song though, I'd also like to separate the bass on the extended version - everyone just goes for it for another 3mins or so at the end :)

Perhaps his nails were long + low action. He uses the slap & pop technique in some parts, so he's not using a pick.

Interesting! In parts it does sound like a pick. It is possible to get a slap type sound with a pick if you pull up hard and down hard. I’m not sure.

Surely these lines weren’t written out for the session. No arranger would come up with this complexity. (Am I wrong?). I’m trying to learn this for a tribute band and the dots are insane.
