I really like this system, working with a small group of teachers. Often kids need some 1-1 but I can't give it to them while being there for the rest of my class. This is a cool solution for situations that don't merit a trip to the office. Thanks so much for sharing this CJ

This makes me wish I could have watched this earlier before walking into the building today. I was going over the classroom expectations/routines again with my students, and at one point all I said was: Classroom expectations: 1. Respect. I would like for all of us to continue to be respectful in this class so we can continue to do what we do in a space that is safe, fun, and comfortable for all. However, if I hear any comments that are hurtful in any form to another student, racist, sexist, homophobic in any way (because I've had at least 3-4 patterns of these comments happening either towards another student or about another teacher outside of my class) then I will put you outside for a one-on-one conversation. But if it becomes something extreme, then I will kindly direct you to the dean or guidance counselor. I maybe said too much.... I also wish we had this system. I might want to try it out with some other teachers or faculty who are available at certain periods!

I really wish the contact home would work. I have a student who’s father is on the school board and refuses to acknowledge his child’s misbehavior. She meows, barks, yells students names, mimics me, interrupts every lesson every day. Admin will not support me because dad is on the school board and they refuse to address the child’s behavior. I don’t know what else to do. She is on a behavior plan, she refuses to bring it home. I don’t want to send it to dad because he just screams at me on the phone or doesn’t reply to emails.

@jessmll I understand exactly what you're going through as I was in a similar situation my very first year of teaching in which I had a SBM's kid. It sounds like you're doing everything right, but maybe here are some points to consider: 1. Would it be possible if the student could be placed into another section with a different teacher? This would be something you and your colleagues / team would have to be on board with...and Admin. Have SOLID reasoning ahead of meeting, ESPECIALLY if behavior is noted in additional classes. 2. Do you have a camera in your classroom? Perhaps you could record yourself teaching trying all the redirect / strategies with said student (and how they're STILL a disruption) and share with your Admin asking for their input on additional strategies/suggestions....ASK FIRST about this and consult handbook/union. 3. Regarding the behavior plan and how dad is doing nothing to support you or his own child, could a staff member do this with the student at the beginning and end of the day? Especially if it is a staff member this kid really respects and likes. Not sure how helpful any of these are, but just wanted to offer. You are NOT the problem!!! You are doing the best you can in trying circumstances! Have faith!

I am the paraprofessional for ISS in High School. I have grades 9 through 12. My classroom's soul pupose is for the "bad" kids. The kids that have already been kicked out of class and the teachers don't want to deal with anymore. Alot of them have undiagnosed disorders like ADHD and ODD. Most of the time, I have skippers, who don't cause any trouble. But occasionally, I get the ones that don't care about rules, work, staying quiet, or staying in thier seats. I don't yell at them, I don't believe that is respectful or productive. Their parents also do not care about what they are in trouble for as long as they aren't the ones dealing with them so contacting the parents would do nothing for me. What would you suggest for this kind of classroom setting?
