Fascinating interview. I just thought that she grew out of the part of "Jemima". Patricia Blair was so gorgeous. How silly of her to worry about a teen like Veronica. Having read the real history of Daniel Boone, the real Jemima got married young and moved on, so I didn't think much of her leaving. Thanks Rob.

DB was best its first two seasons. It really holds up as historic fiction in the 1st season where things are gritty and the stories were elaborations on real life frontier events in the mid 1770s. By season three it became fantasy adventure with travels from Detroit to Florida and New Orleans...comedy sidekicks, Rosie Greer and Jimmy Dean....conquistadors, Indian princesses, Prince of France....more like Zorro, Robin Hood and the 3 Musketeers TV shows. Fun for kids but they lost the adult audience completely by 1967.

I was just a young kid when I first saw Daniel Boone. And the first time I saw the character Jemima I fell in love with her. But I think I also fell in love with Angela Cartwright when she was on the Danny Thomas Show. And I also watched The Sound of Music I loved her in that one as well. There's just something about the Cartwright girls that turns a young man's eyes

I never made the connection between Angela and Veronica Cartwright until much later. I remembered seeing Angela when she was on Make Room for Daddy. It was either Daddy or Danny but it was the Danny Thomas show. I watched Daniel Boone every week and remembered Darby Hinton as a very small boy. Watching these kids grow up before my eyes was amazing. It also makes me feel very old, LOL.

So glad to hear her say that about my favorite director Hitchcock. Her sister's co-star in LIS Billy Mumy says disparaging things because he had a bad experience, but I always think of him as that bratty kid in The Twilight Zone anyway. Veronica always did wonderful work, she was superb at highly strung characters and break-down scenes, like Children's Hour, The Birds, Alien, Witches of Eastwick, Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake, Inserts. Terrific actress. Critics singled her out for special praise. Always a favorite of mine. She deserved a much bigger career.

The bird scenes, especially the beginning’s,of the bird attack as seen from above with a “bird’s eye” view of the action. Some of Hitchcock’s settings are indelibly etched into our minds. People loved the TV Waltons but they watered it down and made it so sugary sweet it made you want to gag at times. Thanks for some more fun back stories, Rob. They could have said she went to school in the East because after all Daniel Boone was an educated man so I think that could have been believable. You know it's not easy to get jobs in Hollywood and for Patricia Blair to do that to her was very Egocentric kudos To Veronica Cartwright for having a great career wonder if Patricia Blair ever felt jealous of her success Because after Daniel Boone Patricia Blair faded off to never neverland . Which couldn't have happen to a nicer person

I loved her on screen mom, but now that I know why Jemima just disappeared from the show, I'm very disappointed. To think , you barely a teenager could lose a job over a grown woman's jealous pettiness. I've heard that Disney blacklisted Fess Parker & this turned me sour on Disney! I've always enjoyed The Birds, but I was a fan of the Daniel Boone show because my ancestors followed Daniel Boone into the Eastern Kentucky area through the Cumberland Gap. I've watched both Cartwright sisters in several projects. It felt so familiar to see them, like the sisters that might live down the street. Very relatable. But thank you so much, Darby, for mentioning A MINOR CONSIDERATION. The work done by its membership is always behind the scenes, but effective and deserving of all the contributions people can send them. Paul (Petersen) never forgets my birthday, and even though I was just a stage actress, he offered to help me while I was homeless. Fortunately I was able to get housing on my own--well, truth be told it was a miracle of God--and Paul was among the first to congratulate me. I pray for him and Rana every night. When the movie, Elvis, came out, Austin's manager contacted me (I think she might have been related to Frank McGrath of WAGON TRAIN) because I had posted something about his demeanor on the red carpet that raised some concern. I mentioned A MINOR CONSIDERATION, knowing he had been a former child star--well, she wanted me to forward Paul's contact information, and with his permission, I did--but Paul was already on the case. He's so dedicated to the work of helping former child performers. Tom Hanks was already involved as well, helping Austin preserve his mental health. Paul needs more helpers. So if any of you former child performers out there are interested, please reach out to Paul or Darby or Alison Arngrim or any of the people involved in this worthy service organization--if you can't do the leg work, perhaps you can pull out your wallets and credit cards to help.

Wow when I was a kid when I was watching Daniel Boone I thought her character was married off even though that we didn't see too much of Daniel Boone but the parents had control the TV back then so that's what happened that's crazy

Most of us imagined she married Jericho Jones and moved away, since this was a frontier show. It is odd the writers didn't hang a lantern on it in Season 3 with a letter or conversation...but sometimes when an actor leaves they don't mention them again. Eugene Barkley was like that after Season 1. The actor got drafted so he was written out. College was the excuse as he came back for one episode about anthrax, bringing a professor with a Pasteur inoculation....but after that the show pretended he NEVER EXISTED. Same with Stephen Douglas's oldest son Mike and Chuck Cunningham.

Delightful interview, Rob. I, like many others, had a major crush on the Cartwright sisters. Veronica was so good in Alien, receiving a Saturn Award for best supporting actress, but was also worthy of an Oscar consideration IMO

"Spencer's Mountain" and "The Homecoming" were two different literary families with different names....but both were compilations of his short story journals of Hamner's boyhood. One novel took the name of his maternal grandparents. One took the family name of his father's mother's line. The Baldwins were inspired by his elegant once wealthy aunts (mother's side) he boarded with in Richmond during college before the war. They weren't bootleggers. Hamner didn't like Spencer's Mountain as he said the people in the movie were too glamorous and Hollywood as was the setting (it was also filmed contemporary and not a period piece). Therefore HE controlled The Waltons with Lorimar to cast people that really looked the part of his real life family and capture the poverty.

I’ve heard the old actors adage “Never work with animals or children”, but that’s both ridiculous and mean to do to a teenager. Funny that I never put the two sisters together as being related. Very cool video Ward!

I grew up watching Daniel Boone when I was a kid and I still occasionally watch it to this day. As an adult I read in multiple places that the real life Boone was especially fond of his daughter Jemima. Being an adult I realized that TV is entertainment so I didn't naively believe everything I heard or saw but it is disappointing to hear (and believe) that Patricia Blair is the reason Jamima was no longer on the show.
