Kick it - 11 Bass Drums for eurorack

Here it is: The big bass drum module comparison - this one goes to eleven. In just under 20 minutes we play 11 bass drum modules, all with the same sequence, no frills. This is just about listening to all modules in the same setup to be able to compare them. Just what people do when they come to SchneidersLaden showroom to compare modules.
Deciding on a new module is often a lengthy process of weighing pros and cons, gathering opinions, and watching videos. There are product descriptions and feature lists, but ultimately it comes down to sound - does the sound of the module fit the aesthetic I want?
We put all the bass drum modules from our showroom into a rack - 102hp - to pit them against each other: Tiptop Audio - BD909 & BD808, Hexinverter - Mutant BD09 & Mutant Bassdrum, WMD - Crater, Noise Engineering - Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Erica Synths - Bass Drum, Jomox - ModBase 09 Mk II, 2hp - Kick, L.E.P. - Cassa, Befaco - Kickall.
They all have their own character, very different concepts and features. We are not interested in whether one module has three CV inputs more than another, but only in the basic sound - some of the presented modules are quite capable to function as a stand-alone synthesizer voice, but that's not what we want to talk about here. We hope the video can help you in your search for your next kick. At the beginning of the video there is a timeline to help you find your favorites.

    Thanks for this comparison! My favorites are Mutant BD and BIA. The L.E.P. Cassa sounds kind of weird but i guess this is what you have to expect from a L.E.P. Module :D

    Thanks and this was helpful. My fav is the Tiptop BD09. Tones are great. Easy to dial in a solid fundamental kick. If I want more, I can add to the sound. I cant add to a heavy transient or noisy sound. While I enjoy just playing with the BIA...its a pain to add in a mix where the other sounds are clean or more clean. All this said, I just ordered the SSF Ultra Kick. Hoping its fundamental is solid and when I want to add more, I can do that all in one place. Plus I want to use it for sub bass texture.

    Jomox sounds the best to me in terms of weight and the variety of tones you can get out of a module. But its "click" part feels separate from the body/sub. I think it's a must to run it through some saturation and/or compression to "glue" all the components together. Awesome comparison video btw.

    @@nym053 Kind of a pain to dial that in with modular gear though. I reckon it's feasible with the ER-301 although I'm not 100% sure how I'd go about that. A lot of eurorack users don't seem to be using EQ, or are running something pretty basic.

    Great, Can you buy all those modules in one? I like that you focussed on the sounds, Rather than what each can do =) There are A LOT of producers out there making music for the wrong reasons, Forgetting that at its core, Sound is what it is all about. great video

    It does for sure, vaguely regret selling mine. It's just takes up so much rack space lol, can be quite slow to dial in the right sound as well. I might get one in the future and keep it outside the rack next time.

    Yeah, any collection of more traditional modules wired up the right way and dialed in just perfectly, but like the other replies said that takes up a lot more space than any of these modules. That's just the trade-off

  • @final_animal

    @final_animal

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@stinkymart3173 Takes up space and you lose the immediacy of a dedicated module that way. Some people are into modular because they want to design everything from scratch, others want to design an instrument that does exactly what they want, how they want it, and that can include being able to dial in a kick without interrupting your workflow. Both approaches are totally valid, and I think most modular users probably fall into the middle there somewhere with a lot of sound design capabilities but dedicated modules with a niche/specific range as well.
