Kick Drum Mic Shootout - Shure Beta 52A vs Sennheiser e602 MKII
The Sennheiser e602 MKII can be bought for under $200 AU while the Sure Beta 52A is approximately $375 AU. For almost double the price I'm a bit disappointed with the sound of the Shure. Maybe it will work better on different kick drums in different situations. Time will tell.

Thank you. Which do you prefer? Do you mic up different drum kits or just the one?
Thank you for this nice comparison. I also have both mics and a also prefer the sennheiser. And I like the placement toward the edge... very good idea. That gives more the punch I was looking for. I always placed it out of center towards the beater but this technique gives more the sound that i like. The shure gives more the basketball kind of sound which I prefer less... but it serves me well for recording some types of bass cabinets... but not all of them.

ENGLISH: After listening carefully, it is clear to me that Beta52 is more adaptable, because e602 has a very evident coloration, as you mentioned at the end, I personally liked both, but it is important to note that Beta52 is "chameleonic" and live this is an advantage. The Senheiser, being more resonant, may be more useful in more subtle situations: Jazz festivals, studio recordings, or where the bass drum is very dry.

Very valid points. The Beta can certainly be treated with EQ to sound how you like it. I think it would be a better choice for certain bass drums especially very resonant and deep drums. For this kit on this day, I prefer the Senheiser as it was much easier to mix. Thank you for your insights.
Fantastic video Matt. The Sennheiser reproduces the exact tone of my bass drum, where as The Shure sounds dull.. Love ya work… Chris. :)

hard to tell when soloed bc can hear the snare a lot.. but few seconds at end reveals the cardioid pattern is much tighter on the 602 as it’s not picking up the unwanted basketball type sounds caused i think by reflections inside the shell of drum

Sennheiser seems much more natural sounding to me. Nice attack with warm bottom and less “thuddy”. I know a different drum/head/damper/beater can change the game - so always good to compare if you can. And for the purpose of this video demo, your drumming was great!

I have a Shure Beta 52. But, have used AKG D112 and really liked it. But hearing the Sennheiser, I think that maybe it's a better choice.

I used the sennheiser and switched back to the shure. It seemed the shure had more lows (like can be heard in this video) which I needed. Im now thinking of either going back the sennheiser or the 91a beta for more attack/less lows.
@hachewie

One person in the comments talked about using both in unison. Interesting idea. Maybe get the best of both worlds. I think the Shure would sound great on really big kick drums. For my ear the Sennheiser just works with far less EQ. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@hachewie I never use eq anyway, so I just compared them next to eachother in my studio (22x16 kick) I would love to check out the Beta 91A too. From what I heard on youtube it has even more attack than the sennheiser.

They certainly do. I’ve got two different sennheiser headphones.
Your EQ curve seems to match what I was hearing. The Beta 52A sounds very mid-rangey and undefined. Listening on phone speakers (I know, I know), I couldn't distinguish what was going on in the low end, but the Beta 52A is like this big wobble while with the e602, there's a lot of definition out the box. The kick drum with the e602 sounds like what a kick drum should sound like: defined and punchy. With the 52A in the whole beat, there's the drums that sound like actual drums, with a defined attack creating a beat, and then there's the kick off to the side doing its own thing creating some sort of low and mid thing that sort of comes in and out. Not the sound I'm looking for. You can get a nice kick sound out of a 52A, but I prefer getting things right at the source and avoiding EQ use, because in a soundcheck, that's one more thing you have to spend time on.

Same. The Sennheiser is awesome.
To do your video justice I put my studio beats wired headphones on, not the shitty wireless units that tarnish the sound somewhat by the micro preamp module they have in them and frankly both are very fair in the overall delivery and expression. Out of the two I think the Sennheiser has the edge though.
@hachewie
Жыл бұрын
I agree. With a little EQ, they both sound great in a mix. The Sennheiser only needs a subtle tweak. Sometimes the more I mix, the worse it gets. Adding too much Low frequency (especially when mixing in the bass and distorted guitars) the bottom end can get mushy and muddy. I think the Shure is a bit punchier in the midrange so would be great in certain situations and on bigger kick drums. This is only a 16' kick so the Sennheiser enhances the low end well (Al in my opinion). Thanks for the effort and feedback mate.

The Shure is very much a boxy sound on this kick drum. With some EQ it sounds great. I do like the Sennheiser a lot though.
I'm a Rode and Sennheiser guy. I find that Shure will likely outlast nuclear fallout, but while we're alive, in my opinion, the Senny sounded better. Back to back, the Shure sounded like it was in a wet blanket. At the end of the day the most musical microphone wins. Because, ya know... You're recording music.
