I think it's sad that so many karate-ka's see the black belt as the end goal. Nono, 1. dan is the beginning of your karate journey, here you begin to master all the techniques you have learned, and you start to develop your own karate. Osu

Marcus Ganick For real. I'm a blue belt, and I had a female friend who entered at the same time as me in Karate, but she's 2 years younger. We both passed to blue the same day. Unfortunately, she left the country and migrated to the US. In there, 2 months after she passed to blue in my dojo, she became a brown belt. Which is sad, because, even if my kid were in a mcdojo (I would never let that, but if), I wouldn't let him pass belt per month, so quickly, it just isn't right. And now she has this mentality that its all about the belt, and not about the way, something my dojo supports. My sensei always quotes me "the belt simply holds your pants, nothing else".

I have the utmost respect for you and the way you run your dojo. It's so refreshing to see someone teaching the art the way it should be. Reminds me of my youth when I trained with Master Tadashi Yamashita. Times have changed, and I use to struggle with parents questioning when their kids were going to test. Finally I pointed out you are not training for a piece of colored cloth. You are training for the knowledge and all karate has to offer. If you are ever in the Boston area, reachout, first round of saki is on me. Osu!

In my society we only have a Graduation per year, in June, and a "closed" one in December, in case you lost the first one for any reason. If my sensei sees you're really good, and you put effort in what you do; you get access to the closed graduation, in order to "skip" an year, however he lets us do that only for one time. I've actually done that the last year. These kids are great, love how they put effort in what they do, and it seems they're really enjoying that! Great job.

Mr. Enkamp. The world keeps moving along because one person passes on, teaches, another what they know. They pass on the interpretation of what they know. The world gives awards and honors for inanities at times to people that masquerade as other than what they really are. If there is something after this world, and if there are rewards there, teaching/helping/caring for kids is surely a top honor there. Nothing is more precious than, nothing worth more as a persons time. To not only dedicate your time but, to enjoy teaching kiddos...I think gives a person to call themselves a “good guy.” Good for you guy.

I really appreciate the way you explain the differences between an adult and a Jr. Black Belt. I trained for 8 years prior to receiving my black belt. I trained for an additional 6 years for my 2nd degree black belt. I always explain to people that all of the training and testing preparing you for your black belt is basically teaching you how to control your body. Once you receive your black belt that's when your training truly begins and you learn to control your opponents body.

i trained 10 years karate and mma but we still focus on katas and karate especially kyokushin kumite! in my gym fighters must train something like 13 years to get to a black belt, of course in depends on how fast you learn but still you need that years to truley become a proffesional. in our gym the belts go like this : white yellow orange green brown black and then dan's. i am blue belt after 10 years, i had a chance to be brown belt and the test is very hard !! ohh i remember my blue belt test!! at the end you stand like a punching bag but the most important thing is that you keep standing and trying to do something like a hurt tiger! you need to have strong spirit in karate! i already have the brown belt papers and i need to do that : katas : Heian Shodan Heian Nidan Heian Sandan Heian Yondan Heian Godan Tekki Shodan Bassai Dai Kanku Dai Jion then i show my techniques: kicks : mae geri (slap and hold) mawashi geri mika zuki (out side,in side, spinning and scissored mika zuki) yoko geri oshiro geri ura mawashi geri (front, back and sppining) Gedan Mawashi Geri kakto geri then : shadow boxing (boxing)-including striking, blocks, foot work and Feints then : shadowboxing (karate)-including striking, blocks and Feints then : shadowboxing (muay thai)-including knees, elbows, blocks. ippon: 1-25 right side 1-25 left side self defense : street style choke with both hands straight from the back from and sides mma style choke with one of the hands griping the other from front side and back and the same choke to the floor street style hammer punches to the hand (you need to go for the takedown) and the last one i forgot the english word.... it looks like you hug someone from the front side or the back and you need to free yourself... knife attack pistol attack then BJJ Transitions from all positions freeing your self from bad positions, lucks or chokes. choke or luck from each position then JUDO take downs and all kinds of bringing down your opponent then the fights : boxing boxing muay thai bjj mma karate karate karate karate karate and then you get your brown belt !!!! (also in our gym the maximum number of tests that are dome at the same time is maximum 2 or 3(

The school I started with did gradings every 6 months for belts above Yellow. White and Red were done every 3 months and they were super easy. White to Red didn't really have any special requirements. It was more of a way to keep the kids coming. My style had the following belt order: White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Brown, Brown, Almost Black, Black (1st Dan). So minimum time to Black (provided you passed every grading) was: 3 + 3 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 5 years.

I love the fact you make a distinction between Junior Black Belt and a full Black Belt, we call it Provisional Black Belt. I am curious as how you grade them from then on. We start building the adult curriculum into their training. They grade once per year earning a white tip on their belt (we use the same as you) and at sixteen they are eligible to test for the full belt. Also, in regard to grading/testing as an additional income source, we only charge for the Junior Black Belt and full Black belt tests. They get a larger diploma, an embroidered belt, and the adults get a new uwagi.

Not all studios that allow Kids to earn plain Black Belts are McDojos. My instructor's instructor was as hardcore as they get, and if a junior student earned it, he would give it. But he would hold the kids to the same standards as the adults, and he NEVER guaranteed a Black Belt to anyone. He was the kind of instructor who would give someone a failing grade on a test for no other reason than that haven't failed a test in a while, to teach a "life lesson" or something like that. He was also borderline abusive to his kids by today's legal standards, and it's amazing that he was never sued. XD That's an extreme example, but there are studios that think 1st Dan is just about mastering the basics, and they believe a gifted, hardworking 9 or 10 year old is capable of that. Those studios progress the students more slowly from that point with incremental age limits for each Dan. Some of those studios are excellent studios with high quality training and kick-butt Martial Artists who have great values. Of course, some are not.

How do your junior black belts graduate to black belt? Do they have to start over or wait for a particular amount of time to elapse?

Hey bro, have you ever heard of Kajukenbo? What do you think of it? I’m an orange belt, and I really find it enjoyable. Also, something about Karate. I joined into a class or two and noticed that there is almost 0 sparring during training. And when there is, it’s usually limited to light taps above the belt. I looked it up and found out that most sparring is even done in slow motion. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed. You have no chance to apply what you learn. So I wanted to ask: are all Karate classes like this, or only some schools? Or maybe it’s about the Karate style?

You just got to love kids at a Karate Dojo. Congratulations to all of them, they can be very proud of themselves! It´s always, especially during a grading, full of tension, in kids´ classes: *roku, kyu [here it comes! all the tension is about to be released] JU!* and BOOM tons of kids go full _Saiyan-Mode_ HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so nice :D
