Recently my friend's father in law hit a tree with his 3 year old car (Honda amaze I guess), all passengers are safe ( that is an excellent safety rating) but the insurance company has declared the car totalled and he will have to purchase a new one.( This means build quality was not like Tata which can even handle the toppling of car). Safety ratings mean it will keep passengers safe but build quality is tested in day to day usage, it is not like every day you will have head on collision at 55kmph, build quality means how much durable is it bonnet, boot and doors etc, bumpers are any ways made of fibre. In above case, Had it been a Nexon or Tiago maybe the car was still repairable. Similarly my 7 year old ecosport has been on road ( literally) I don't have parking space but you won't see any major dent on it ( just small scratches)where as my sister's recently purchased i20 and brother in law's Baleno has lot of visible dents in them, some are from just a simple touch from tail gating bikers or cars. Mine even does not have airbag so I believe it is not even 1 star but build quality is good, it's metal sheet is durable, body is solid like tank, I have done spiti trip on same. It was hit under belly( water logged road) , shocker took a beating when I didn't saw a broken patch on road, touched a tata pick up truck while crossing narrow lane, hit pole from right side while reversing a slow speed at night, it was very dark, but there are just simple scratches on bumper and fender, nothing else. Also next day a drunkard biker hit my car from behind. He was on his royal Enfield. Still a negligible small dent
