Kia's Un-Minivan | 2022 Kia Carnival First Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is "Carnival" an odd sounding name to the American ear? Yes. On the other hand, Kia's renamed minivan has a great deal to offer and might just be the best boxy people transporter in America. You'll be happy to know there's only one "Carnival" badge on the back and it looks easy to remove...

You might be right that it doesn't appeal to common buyers, but it is amazing to have that. The only other class of vehicle that has comparable seats would be full size luxury cars like S-class. I don't have kids but I do like to go places and take friends. I currently drive a Mazda 5 (no longer made) and really think that, although a bit larger, I could live with this vehicle.

    I'm glad a US based reviewer finally discussed that the sedona/carnival is not targeted primarily at US based consumers, but the ones in Asia. Asian markets see these big vans as VIP transportation and even status symbols of wealth (the owner rides in the 2nd row, you have a personal driver Ofc). I'm saying this because the design priorities will be different than something like a sienna or pacifica. That's why some of the interior appointments can seem more akin to a limo (adult comfort, interior quality, etc) rather than the 'family-oriented' vans (storage holes, on board vaccuum, cargo oriented to carrying children and their stuff).

Overall they have hit this one out of the ballpark. One ding is that it does not have wireless carplay. They could have easily added it. Not sure why the did not. The lane centering also works well on freeways including most curves. Stop and go works great as well. Great Job Kia.

    The middle seat sliding all the way back makes perfect sense. It improves comfort for 3 adults riding in the middle row as the shoulders aren't up against each other. Another logical reason would be having two adults outboard and an infant in the middle, with them back a little further they are easier to interact with, being able to face them.

  • @jimyoung648

    I see it as most flexible 2nd row seating for when you have 5 large passengers and want the 3rd row down for max luggage space. It seems the outer 2nd row seats can be spread wider apart leaving even more room in the middle for feet as all 3 have more shoulder room. What's not clear is if all 3 second row seats can be in line al the way back as far as the outer ones can travel. I love the idea of it doubling as a table for up to 5 people in the 2nd and 3rd rows when you are only taking 7 people, and it is removable (as are the other 2nd row seats, so you can have a more easily accessible 3rd row if you want to make different trade offs in passenger seats and luggage space ). Sometimes I just want seating for 2 (1st Row with 3nd row seats removed for maximum cargo space), sometimes I just want 1 extra seat so 3 people can leave the most luggage/cargo space (just 1 second row seat installed and third row folded down, which can easily be changed to 6 people as row 1 with 2, row 2 with 1 seat, and row 3 with 3 seats). I can't tell you how many times cars with only 5 seats meant we had to take two cars, or leave out a person (really frustrating when we have find an available bigger vehicle to rent for any longer trips) Great as a Plug-in Hybrid option since I hope to never again purchase a car that isn't at the very least a hybrid, and I am in favor of the electric AWD to get just a enough extra traction for Maine winters (especially if it has regenerative capability on the rear drive). Mechanical AWD may be better for some but is a seemingly a lot more expensive to repair (and more likely to need repair if you put on over 306,000 miles like I did on my Prius. Even just the FWD on my early Prius had enough regenerative capability to slow the car on long downhill runs letting the brake pads to last 275,000 miles. They would have lasted even longer if I had kept the sliders properly greased, since the right front inside pad took the full braking load on that wheel since the stuck slider kept the outer pad from making full contact. I hadn't noticed it since you can't see it from the outside and I only saw the inside when I replaced tires.

    What I don't understand is why the middle seat goes back so far but the 2nd row lounge seats in the top trim do not. I have the current gen Sedona with those lounge seats and they are very nice, but they only go back enough for someone I'd say 5'9" or under to be able to fully stretch out. If it went back another 6 to 9 inches a 6 footer would be able to fully stretch his legs. I had assumed the reason it didn't go back so far on my van is the seat belts are attached to the B-pillar so it is not safe for the seat to go back so far, but on the new van the belts are attached to the seat itself, so you'd think they could now make the seat go back even further.

    I keep coming back to the channel even though I'm not in the market for a car. I like your calm presentation style. As for this car, storage and fitting adults is important. This might be a good van for my parents. My dad had knee replacement surgery this year. He's tall, so not having to climb down into his sedan would be nice. He misses the towing capacity. Now that one of my three brothers is married, if we all go somewhere together, it would be nice to fit several adults comfortably.

    @mdunkman3 жыл бұрын

    For those with many kids in carseats, I saw lower anchors on all 3 middle row seats and the two outboard third row seats with rear tethers for all three third row seats. This would let you install up to 6 carseats if kids can magically teleport through the middle row. So far this is the only vehicle that I have seen with so many options for child seating. A family with four children could take out the passenger side middle seat and fit two children in the middle row and have two in the back with potentially enough room for an adult to join them if the carseats are narrow enough. This is remarkably uncommon in three row vehicles!

This makes it pretty much impossible to squeeze a third, non-car-seat person because the two car seats wind up taking most of the space. It's a weird design choice that bothers me a lot.

    I have to commend Kia for really thinking about what type of product they're putting into the market and how it correlates to their brand ethos. This Carnival is such a bold, stylish, and unique offering in the class. I would not be surprised if the SX Prestige becomes as sought after as the Telluride SX-L. Minivan buyers often spring for loaded versions, plus they're not always for young families. Seniors love them. The incandescent bulbs in the rear bumper are the only things spoiling the fun.

    Hi Alex! @10:20 something, I think the reason why the middle seat of 2nd row can go further back is because you can use that as a table. You can turn turn the 2nd row seat to face the back and have like a lounge where 2nd row faces 3rd row and use the middle seat as a table. Good review! Im looking for a minivan and im torn between the carnival and all its seating features or the sienna with AWD and hybrid. Hoping 2022 sienna will have seating like the carnival or 2023 carnival can offer AWD.

    IF this vehicle actually had "Stow-N-Go" 2nd row seating and a HIDDEN sliding door track, ala Chrysler minivans for decades, the Pacifica would be toast. Having owned several Chrysler minivans, I can't underestimate the value of Stow-N-Go seating. Not only practical for QUICK trips to the lumber yard, but also offering abundant "In Floor Storage" when used as a 7 passenger vehicle or vacationmobile. I've owned 2 Hyundai Sonatas and a Kia Niro and have been thoroughly impressed by the Korean engineering and amenities. BUT for a truly multipurpose functionality vehicle, the Chrysler balance in their minivan designs is hard to beat. Their patent/s on Stow-N-Go technology must be close to expiring soon.

    I think the minivan competitors don't implement stow and go not due to any patent, but rather they prioritize 2nd row seat comfort over stowability. Stow and go seats need to be thinly padded by design, and since most people don't carry cargo that often, Honda/Toyota and now Kia have continued to go with removable 2nd row seats over stow and go. My colleague did buy a Pacifica specifically for stow and go, but interestingly not for storage. He has 3 young children and the van is used for drop off and pick up from daycare. So he puts one child seat in the 2nd row and two seats in the third row, then stows the other 2nd row seat into the floor so it makes is super easy to get all 3 kids into their seats. Then when you do need to carry another passenger, it is easy to pop the seat out from below the floor.

    Alex, I'm surprised you didn't mention the other class-exclusive safety oriented feature, the blind view camera. Anything to differentiate minivans from one another would be very helpful, especially when it comes to convenience and safety. Might as well show the 360 cam too. And in the 8 passenger, just out of curiosity, can you mount the second row seats backwards so you can set up a lounge? Then you could push the middle seat way into the middle in it's down position to use as a table.

    Greetings from South Korea. To answer your question, the reason the 2nd row middle seat slides so far back is for its use as a drinks table. Stay with me. The left and right 2nd row middle seats are taken out during a car camping trip or beach party. You take the left seat around to the right side of the car, and the right seat around to the left side of the car and install the seats backwards. You will know when they are installed properly when you see the green light come on at the bottom of the seat. With the turned seats, and middle seat down as a table...you now have a drinks lounge or conversation booth in the back of the car. You're welcome!
