Kia Carnival (Sedona) review and buyer's guide | Auto Expert John Cadogan

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After two weeks test-driving the 2021 Kia Carnival (AKA Sedona) - the V6 petrol and the diesel - here’s everything I loved, and everything I hated about this vehicle.

My fortnight in Kia Carnival was split equally between the V6 petrol Platinum and the 2.2 turbodiesel Platinum. Kia supplied both vehicles - in the same way evaluation vehicles are typically supplied to other media outlets for reviews like these.
My default position on Carnival is: I always try to detest Carnival, overall, because it’s a people mover, and I always fail. I end up loving it. Especially the diesel (we’ll get to that). I look forward to driving a Carnival, and I hate giving it back. Despite my sincere efforts to the contrary.
In the context of what this vehicle purports to be, it’s a very faithful execution indeed.
Carnival’s not perfect - no car is - so the purpose for bringing you the hate, as as well as the love, is A) hate balances out love, and B) it alerts you to the things you might not ultimately like about the vehicle, which might matter more to you than they do to me. This is, of course, important to know - before you spend the big bucks.
Carnival is objectively better than an SUV in so many important ways - like accommodation, access, luggage space, versatility and convenience. And, frankly I think a lot of people who buy a typical seven-seat SUV would actually be better off in a Carnival. There’s a lot more to love than to hate about this vehicle, and none of the ‘hate’ items would be a deal-breaker for me.
It’s like any relationship - you embrace the things you love and learn to live with the things you hate. This goes for every relationship from that with your lovely wife to your job and even your smartphone.
So, don’t get me wrong here - I love the new Carnival, and I recommend it to you without reservation. I even tried hating it, and I failed. It’s just not perfect, and going into this, spending the big bucks while operating under the delusion that you’re finally procuring the perfect car is just paving the road to heartbreak. No car is perfect. No relationship - with a car or otherwise - is perfect.

Carnival is a very honest car. Pre -pandemic I had to deliver a training course to a group of people, we were driving in a rented one for 2.500 km all around rural NSW for a week, five adults plus full luggage. The perfect car for the job, strong enough, smooth driving, very convenient. I found even consumption very reasonable considering the size of the vehicle.

If I haven’t almost pissed myself halfway through most of your reviews there’s something wrong...... how you’ve made auto journalism so enjoyable I’ll never know😁 So the purchase has been made on the Platinum diesel and managed to avoid the “4 month” jargon with delivery in 3 weeks. I actually like that it isn't pretending to be an SUV - lower centre of gravity means less wallowing in the corners. I take your point that AWD would be a good option but for most people I wouldn't think that is necessary.

As I understand it, it is specifically the lack of AWD that allows for the deep tub that the third row folds in to. This is in comparison to the Hyundai Staria which is basically the same platform, it has AWD when paired with diesel, but you lose the fold down third row.

John, just on the false positives with the collision warning system... My 2019 Mazda 3 has gotten a lot better over time. I can't find any information on the system, but considering the changes to the way it drives semi-autonomously (start-stop + lane keep assist) and the false positives over the 24,000km I've done so far, I believe it to be a learning system. Now, it almost never gives a false positive and the semi-autonimous driving has become much more smooth and intuitive. Given the evidence presented to me, I think these systems learn over time. Thanks for the video!

JC, is it just the camera angle, or is the 20-20 FO logo printed on that shirt off centre? On another note, I carry a full size spare when towing the caravan with our CX-9. Not only is the space saver crap and limited for speed, it's also limited for distance and - wait for it - only to be used on the rear wheels! Add all those restrictions together, throw in a couple of public holidays with no tyre shops open (like we're blessed with this weekend) and it's a recipe for the kids setting new car-counting records at the roadside whilst you wait for whatever help you can muster.

  • @tspshilt

It is possible to remove the outboard centre row seats, but yeah the wiring harness is a pain, primarily due to the strain relief anchors (and I broke one of them). You are also at risk of squishing the wires when you are putting the seats back in because the seats are pretty heavy.

I appreciate your comments regarding the switch gear. As a geek, that's the sort of thing that I notice and often lament even in "premium products". I am curious about the decision to go with the rotary control for the transmission. Is this just for interior packaging efficiency? Does it allow for a common SKU for LHD and RHD variants? I am sure it is nice, but the shifter in the current model Kia Seltos feels and operates so well that I feel they could have just stuck with that formula.

Speaking of forward collision warning.... I was driving a Holden Caprice a few months ago, and it had that feature. I didn't have many false alarms on the front... but the REAR. Ever time i would overtake a car, when i pulled back into the left lane, a few car lengths ahead of the car I'd just passed, it's Rear collision warning would go apeshit. I'm guessing the rear sensor was just looking directly straight back. "No car in lane, No car in lane" then when you pull back in "HOLYSHIT A CAR! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!?"

My wife sensibly made me buy Kia Carnival Limiteds. They’ve been fantastic. Now with 4 kids, we’ve had diesels and found that the V6 Suited us best. I’m convinced that the best family wagon on the market. As much as I love range Rovers the practicality and comfort of the top spec `carnivals are much better value than the max 5 Seater Rangey.

"Club Seating" not available down under? I can't seem to find where it IS available. I looked at US spec'd (hope that passes punctuation muster) vehicles and see we get "lounge seating" with recline and large thigh support...irrelevant to hauling children. Might have to check what the poverty package 2022 Carnival offers here in America. Had there been "reversible" seats in row 2, I think that's a far superior design for small children as a safety offering and heck, in military aircraft we traditionally rode "backwards" as a practical arrangement. Maybe in 2023.

Re space saver spare on a Carnival. It cannot be used when heavily loaded nor can it be used on gravel roads. I had to take a Carnival wheel (In my Falcon) over 80km of gravel road, each way, to get it repaired and return it to the owner. Otherwise, they are a great vehicle and that V6 is a great engine.

If the rotating seats are available in Canada, it would just as helpful. Dude It links up with 2 phones (or tablet I bet). Go buy a cheap 2nd phone, pair both up, and sit back and smile. About the "you are going to crash" warning. I know of a software case where "they" demanded some "are you sure" thing in a lot of places that it didn't make sense. The result was, the software folks ended up having to add an "are you really really sure" thing to the one place it mattered. This did not amuse the users a whole lot but people stopped stomping on the important thing because they were trained to click the "OK" for the warnings.
