Welcome to Khartoum City, a beautiful, diverse, modern city with tree-lined avenues, futuristic skyscrapers and hub of commerce.
1. Basic Facts.
Khartoum is the executive capital of Sudan. With a population of 5,274,321, its metropolitan area is the largest in Sudan. Khartoum is located at the confluence of the White Nile.
2. Three Cities in One.
Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with an estimated overall population of over five million people, consisting of Khartoum proper and its sister cities of Khartoum North and Omdurman.
3. Economy.
Khartoum has the highest concentration of economic activity in the country. There is a strong retail presence as evidenced by the huge Souq al Arabi, the largest open air market in Sudan amongst other private and multinational commercial establishments. Also, among the city's industries are printing, glass manufacturing, food processing, and textiles. Petroleum products are now produced in the far north of Khartoum state, providing fuel and jobs for the city.
4. Climate.
Khartoum is one of the hottest major cities on Earth, with annual mean temperatures hovering around 30 °C. In no month does the average monthly high temperature fall below 30 °C and it can go as high as 50 degrees Celsius.
5. Etymology of the name.
The origin of the word Khartoum is uncertain but Dinka scholars argue that the name derives from the Dinka words khar-tuom translating to "place where rivers meet". This is supported by historical accounts which place the Dinka homeland in central Sudan, around present-day Khartoum, as recently as the 13th-17th centuries A.D
6. People.
Khartoum population consists of a large cultural diversity which is made up of a combination of original inhabitants of the Nile Valley and migrants from the Arab peninsula. There are 19 major ethnic groups and over 597 ethnic subgroups speaking more than 100 languages and dialects. Black and lighter skinned Arab speaking Muslims are considered the largest single ethnic group at about 70% of the total population, while other ethnicities such as Nubians, Copts and Beja and others make up the remainder. Almost 250,000 Syrians lived in Khartoum as of 2021, representing 5% of the total population of the city. Most are young men who have fled war in Syria. Sudan was the only country in the world to accept travelers carrying a Syrian passport who lacked a visa.
7. Architecture.
Architecture of Khartoum cannot be identified by one style or even two styles; it is as diverse as its culture, where 597 different cultural groups meet. Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. Sudan was once upon a time part of the ancient Egyptian civilization. This is evidenced by the many pyramids that adorn the place that speak of Sudans past glory.
8. Food Culture.
The day usually begins with a cup of tea. The meals consist of beans, salad, liver, and bread. Millet is the staple food, and is prepared as porridge called asida or a flat bread called kisra. Dura is a staple food in Sudan made of cooked maize and millet and can be served along with vegetables or as a stew. Generally speaking, Sudanese people are very welcoming to visitors and will go to great lengths to impress.
9. History.
In 1821, Khartoum was established 24 kilometers north of the ancient city of Soba, by Ismail Pasha, the third son of Egypt's ruler, Muhammad Ali Pasha, who had just incorporated Sudan into his realm. Originally, Khartoum served as an outpost for the Egyptian Army, but the settlement quickly grew into a regional center of trade. It also became a focal point for the slave trade. Later, it became the administrative center and official capital of Sudan.
10. Politics/Arab Spring.
In modern times, it has been a site of political unrest. This has been marked by a revolution of against an exploitative, non-inclusive central government leading to the ouster of Omar Al Bashir and the onset of a more democratic regime.
