    Some facts. Khabib is from Sildi, population ~208. At the Rio Olympics, Dagestani wrestlers won five freestyle medals. At the 2017 Russian Freestyle National Championships, 9 of 16 finalists were Dagestani. Dagestanis often transfer to and wrestle for other countries. Dagestan is famous for its "Legionaries". In Rio at 86 kilos, half the medalists from the USA's Jorden Cox's weight class were from Dagestan, the other was from the nearby Republic of Ingushetia. Wrestling is part of Dagestani culture. Every kid in Dagestan grows up surrounded by wrestling. It's part of the fabric of daily life.

    if I remember right, people from Dagestan do not even call themselves Dagestani, as the Dagestan is merely a territory that has a lot of small nations within, Khabib in particular is an Avar, the largest nation of Dagestan. There are also Lezgins, Dargins, Laks, Tabasarans and many more, they all have their own languages and cultures. As to why they do not consider themselves Russians, there are multiple reasons. Majority of North Caucasus nations were conquered by Russia in 19th century or some, and are mostly Muslim, as opposed to mostly orthodox Christian Russians. They tend to stick more to their religion and their traditions and do not respect Russians for their habits such as drinking and other matters that Muslim own religious laws forbid. In general, Caucasians have stereotypes for Russians as a drunkard lowlifes with no regard to traditions such as respect for elders etc, while Russians have their own stereotypes about Caucasians as savages and criminals.

  • @pg5137

    Not quite. Orthodoxy does not forbid drinking nearly as severe as Islam. I do not think that Fedor is admired significantly more in North Caucasus than other notable fighters, evident by the case with children MMA tournaments when Fedor's criticizm of children MMA fights (under 12 y.o, according to laws they cannot be even present at MMA events, let alone fight in one) earned him hostile reaction from Chechnya, Dagestan etc.

While it's been well known for years it's now becoming a complete topic via broadcast like Sonnen's and Rogan's channels. I think Chael has lots of good points, but when he went on about Khabib, where he's from, about being Russian, etc...I just thought it got cringeworthy. To be that ignorant is actually embarrasing. It's as dumb as if I should claim that Americans from the Lone star state of Texas comes from the "texasian village", and that they are in fact Mexican... Stupid. Yet, Americans and Mexicans have W-A-Y more in common than what Russians and people from Dagestan (or from the Caucasus-region) have.

    Lol I wasn't primarily taking issue with his morphology, though you're wrong, it does present an ambiguity which needs to be resolved from contextual inference, which in that sentence pointed toward him referring to Dagestan as a whole. I know English pretty well. My comment was about the very clear ignorance/uncertainty he has about what Dagestan is and how it came to be, yet he professes as if he's educating listeners about exactly that. It doesn't really take away from his point about wrestling credentials, he could have just left out any "history lesson" and said Khabib is from a tiny village with a lot of champions. Chael just seems to like flaunting his ignorance. I think he does it to get reactions sometimes like with the "Anderson Silva playing in the mud in Brazil" thing, but sometimes it seems genuine, like here.

    @jay jay So? Burroughs has lost more recently and in a lesser stage. Sadulaev's loss came right after he moved up in weight in the world championship finals. And he lost by one point and pinned the same guy later. In contrast, Burroughs couldn't even make it to the last world championship finals.

  • @alfarabi73

    @alfarabi73

    5 жыл бұрын

    @jay jay That's an irrelevant issue. Both Zabeast and me were talking about current wrestlers. More specifically, the issue people are debating here is Burroughs v. Sadulaev. I think Sadulaev is superior: He is technically more diverse; and his resume is at least arguably as good - and far superior considering age. Frankly, I think the claim that Burroughs is better than Sadulaev as borderline silly, because Burroughs is currently neither the Olympic Champion nor the world champion. You usually need to be at least one of the two - and really both - to be considered the best wrestler in the world now. As for all-time, Karelin has a strong claim, but he's a Greco-Roman wrestler - and competition is less deep in Greco-Roman, simply because fewer athletes. So it's difficult to compare a Greco-Roman wrestler v. a free-style wrestler.
