FINALLY someone gives the praises to Gold Key. I stopped going after all Marvel and most DC comics and started collected strictly Atlas, Gold Key and off brand gold/silver books.

I’ve been snapping up a fair number of Dells and Gold Keys in the past few years. I’m a big fan of the early Hanna-Barbera characters since those are the ones I watched as a child. I’m happy to have the Gold Key Jonny Quest and Space Ghost issues shown in your video.

Thankyou Jim for this video: unlike many other KZreadrs, you understand that the comics medium is much more than just Marvel and DC from the last two decades. Great overview of Dell and Gold Key/Western, and you chose some fantastic examples of these publishers' comics. Another aspect of Gold Key is that the titles often did not get into double digits, making it easy to collect entire series. GK also issued digest-size compilations of some titles (Boris Karloff I think may be one) which is a whole other area of GK collecting. I have a box of Dells which adapt my favourite movies of the 1950s and 1960s, I was lucky enough to find a dealer twenty years ago who let me buy his unwanted issues in ones and twos as my finances allowed for an excellent price; "Spartacus" is one one of these books. Love to see more videos like this Jim.

My favorite "Non-SuperHero" Key from my collection is Four Color #990. It's a "Mega Key" featuring 1st appearances of "Yogi Bear, BooBoo Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Pixie & Dixie and Mr. Jinks". CGC didn't bother to Notate any of these 1st appearances on the slab.

In the UK, there were 2 JQ hardcover annuals. One reprinted the one shot with several prose stories and the next year, the second annual had all prose stories with art. Then in the 70s, Australia reprinted it as well

Great video, the first comic book I ever bought was star trek #1 in 1977 for the monumental sum of 15 dollars and I still have it, I consequently found out that there were more and decided I had to have them all. (Gold keys) Now here it is 47 years later and about 4000 comics later and I'm still not there, don't worry though I've gone to far to stop now, there turned out to be more than I ever dreamed what with the Whitman variants and the Canadian and English price variants and not to mention the Canadian pin-up back variants, don't get me wrong I wouldn't trade them for anything. I still collect and read them to this day, and at my local flea market the comic dealers called me the gold key guy. I could think of worse things to be called. Anyway let's see some more gold key content.

Outstanding video, and very timely for me. Last week I found a Dell Giant #48 (first Flintsones) at a local estate sale for $2. Thought that was a good score! I'm purposely learning about these more obscure keys, and while everyone else competing for the Marvel keys, I'm scooping these lesser known books.

Gold Key and Dell are vastly underrated books. Can't say that I have any, but that kind of obscure stuff is what I love. I'm not a fan of slabbing as I believe comics are made to be read but I get the investment angle and why people do it.

Great video, nice work on the comparisons! In January 2021 I found a Scooby Doo 1 in a local antique store for $3, and despite the rough shape, I knew immediately this was a great find! It got a 3.0 from CGC, which I was very happy with. Then last June I bought a Star Trek 1 off ebay - it's a 4.0-5.0 - really happy with that. Another less known Gold Key I picked up is Boris Karloff Thriller 1 (1962), which became Boris Karloff's Tales of Mystery and ran for many years...

Bravo, Jim! This video was right up my alley! I love, love, love obscure comics. Gold Key, Dell, & Charlton comics are the best places to find them. Unfortunately, the grades tend to be low but that doesn’t bother me much; as long as it has a cover and all the pages are present. Every now and again I do find a gem of a comic, for example; I picked up a Battle of the Planets from Gold Key that looked like it could have been a 9.8. My most obscure pick up, so far, is an Adlai Stevenson from Gold Key #612. I am kicking myself for bailing early on your last auction; looks like I missed out on that Gold Key Monkees. 😢 Oh well , I will be back next time looking for more comic gold. Great video!

I certainly agree that those Hanna Barbera comics are very hard to find in high grade. I have a Scooby Doo #1 gold key and it's like a .5 to maybe a 1.0 if I'm lucky and I refuse to get rid of that book even in that grade.

Alright, who wants to know about Doctor Who? This will be a very short 14 hour dissertation on the TV series, movies, books, comics, and more. 🤣🤣 I've been hunting for a copy of that Dell Dr. Who, but I've not found it in the wild, and when I've come across it online it's been out of my price range. Same with that Star Trek book. I used to have some of the old Dell books, but they were all readers that I loved to death. The only Gold Key books I have now are a handful of Ripley's books and a couple of Boris Karloff books. Great video, Jim. I like seeing how these stack up to the more mainstream superhero books.

Great video. I only have one of the books you spotlight, Dell Giant 48 - probably in a 7-8, nice copy for sure. Bought it for maybe $40 back around 2000. I grew up on a lot of those same shows but the Flintstones was the only one I really liked even at the time (always thought Scooby Doo in particular was stupid and can't for the life of me understand the popularity it has continued to have). I have maybe 2 dozen Flintstones comics - Dell/GK, several Charltons, and a couple of the Marvels. Most are mid-grade but I do have an absolutely flawless - I'm talking 9.8-worthy - Bigger & Boulder #1. Which is probably worth not much more than it would cost to get graded, still. Oh well. No plans to sell them anytime soon unless they really do take off in price. I used to have a Star Trek 1 (traded, back in the 90s, for I don't remember what) and a Dr. Who and the Daleks (sold a long time ago). Johnny Quest is the one I'd really like - I have the whole Comico series and loved it, and would like to catch the TV show someday.

Great video. With these books you can’t look at cgc for real information. Grading comics is a comic collector thing. A monster kid would drop 300 for that Addams Family book, and never think about cgc. A Hanna-barbera collector I doubt would slab there books. I have all those comics except the Scoody, and unless I was selling, I would never slab.
