Get a flashlight and small mirroe (compact or "dental" Move drivers's seat all the way back and recline it Stand on your head under steering wheel Begining at accelerator pedal linkage look toward where steering whhel shaft goes to forewall Between accelerator linkage and steerig shaft is a metal and plastic box attached to wiring harness. Put mirror behind thei (accelerator side if I remember right) and shine light on it. (if you wear bifocals even more fun) You should see a five digit code.

Also, do you have an owner's wallet card or an owner's guide packet in your glovebox? The code will be on those. In the owner's manual it tells you where to find the code on the car. It should be on the computer module to the left of the steering collumn under the driver's side dash board. Look in my video description for a link, go to it and scroll down to 1996-1999 and look at pictures, they might help.

No, it isn't under the hood. It is under the dash board on the driver's side. Find the gas pedal and look left and it is a box attached to a wiring harness. The code may me on the side or back so you might need a small mirror.

thanks, I recently got a used 2005 Sable. I was able to find the factory code using the pictures in the link. Unfortunately, I had to stand upside down on my head in the drivers seat, lol. only way I could get it clearly.

If you're lucky, the code will be on the inside of the trunk lid, but Ford stopped doing that sometime in the 90s so your 1998 sable might have it on the inside of the trunk lid, or it might not. Please let me know if you find the code, I'll be glad to help. Also, if worst comes to worst; just go to a ford dealer and they will find it for you.
