All musicians have that "Know" thing ,a non player might say like "yeah he's ok" than your like no man you don't understand
Alex doesn't get enough credit, he's a brilliant drummer.
Excellent narrative and playing. "Outta Love Again" was legendary. I wish they had recorded more songs in that vein.
Alex was such a hip drummer. Lot of big band influence there!

Yeah they always liked to talk about "Swinging." Definitely some old school swag, and swing - inspired from that Big-Band Era. Their Father being a Jazz musician probably had something to do with that. But yeah - what Van Halen really was, at the core, was a hot-rodded Blues Band. In my opinion, the greatest Rock N' Roll Band in history!

Around 1:53 Alex gets some funky rhythms going. Love how he shines in the midst of an iconic guitar solo. The brothers were so locked into each other. It's other worldly.

@@CribNotes Agreed. There's an energy between the brothers while Eddie solos. Alex is raising it up and pushing it forward. ZZ Top has the same transitional energy when their songs change direction. "Im Bad, I'm Nationwide" is a good example of groove taking over in the latter part of a song.

@@D_Tuned well said! ZZ Top and Van Halen definitely share some DNA. The brothers were fans of their groove, no doubt about it. There are a few bootlegs of VH covering them floating around

Nicely done! Outta Love Again is my all-time favorite performance by the criminally underrated Alex Van Halen.
Man, you NAILED that! That is, arguably, one of the best - if not THE best - drum parts of any VH song. It's so funky. So groovy. So jazzy. The choruses are like little mini-solos. The fill @00:54 is one I've tried to master for years. My very favorite, though, is the fill right before the second chorus that even throws in some humor (which has always been one of my favorite aspects of VH and certainly AVH's playing): "DING - BOOM!".😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂AVH forever!=vH=

Thanks Eric, Yes Alex really came into the forefront on this tune. I feel that Eddie was such a revolutionary player that folks didn't notice how great Alex was as well until VH 2. This song and Light up the sky are simply fire! thanks for watching brother!

Excellent playing! I mean, really excellent! Love that you pay homage to one of the greatest living drummers, AVH.

Wonderful video, playing, and commentary....this is absolutely wonderful. I am obviously biased but always felt Alex was such an underrated drummer.....Love this!
Holy hell this is good! Great playing! IMO Alex has been SO underrated!
I remember watching them play drums together after the "Light Up The Sky" guitar solo.😊
You are a beast man!!! This is by far the best Alex Van Halen drum cover I have ever heard!! Kudos to you. 🤘🥁 🤘
Nice drumming! That song is quite challenging on any instrument, Van Halen was always ahead of their time, and thank you for the video.
Nice hi hat work.. killer rolls.... this is a somg that the drums are obviously front n center and really cooks! Love everything about the wrist work in this. Plus alex has his own massive sound that i can detect in 1 or 2 notes right from the start. Its that recognizable! John b. and vinny appice are they same, they got a sound no one else does n i really dig that in a great drummer.

Hey Aubrey - What a killer video!! Lots of fun. I am a Van Halen freak! This is such a killer song, and the drumming is absolutely amazing. I have always thought that Alex was so under-rated. Probably in large part due to the fact that he is "Edward's Brother." LOL There aren't / weren't many guys on this Planet that could upstage AVH, or put him in the shadows. But..... Edward. LOL Anyway - man this is fun. I'm subbing you, and glad I found you! Rock on, Brother! EDIT: Watching this now, a second time. Man Aubrey -You are absolutely AMAZING!!! What a killer drummer you are. Rock on!
Gr8 Stuff Aubrey....Alex Played AMAZING Rhythms 4 Van Halen and is quite-often overlooked, as being A Big Part of The Sound....Eddie and He Gelled and it was Incredible To Listen To.....Cheers from Damo.😊👍

Awesome! One of the greatest drum tracks of all-time.
Your wrist technique looks so much like Alex. His sound is so much based off how he strikes the drums and cymbals and I think you have it nailed.
I believe the formal musical training helped to create a really musical style. He knew abou melody concepts and applied them on VH compositions. My humble opinion. Great video.

Outstanding!
yep Alex is a musician. his drum playing from the earliest album released, VH1 recorded in 9/77, he was 24 .. and was already very very good. the dynamics, the groove and attn to detail, the speed of the fills etc on "I'm the one" for example is stellar. there are all these videos and opinions from smf's across the fruited plain saying ridiculous things about the band members, ie questioning their talent etc.. I'm in my 50's now. here's a newsflash : the members of VH are each terrific musicians. it was common knowledge, while it was happening, (late 70's/80's) they were extremely talented guys who can play with anybody. done. they didn't select Mike 'anthony' Sobelesky bc he was adequate. these were driven, hungry, ambitious guys who wanted to play music for a living. compete and kick ass, make a lot of money, 'sieze the American dream'. you don't become that good, or be considered the biggest band in America, by accident. how many bands, ever, have members who perform solos in their concerts? much less on their first f'ing tour!? these guys could play very impressively, by themselves, on stage from the beginning. highly unusual. also from VH2 the same album "outta love" is on is "lighting up the sky".. AVH has a drum solo in it.. very good. the jazz, big band influence on him/them is obvious. *Notice old VH fans, how much tighter and even more pro-sounding they were on the recording of VH2 (that they recorded in a week in early '79), after a year of touring, than they were on VH1..and each subsequent album for that matter. by WACF in '80 they sound like one instrument imo. I got it as an adolescent when these albums were released. other kids i knew were listening to what ever rock bands they liked at the time.. I would introduce them to VH and to a person, unless they were musicians, (or becoming young musicians) all they heard was Roth..smh

I hear you! I remember hearing that incredible cover of the kinks tune and couldn't believe what I heard. "You really got me" is a good tune but VH's version was like from another planet! Everything you just wrote. Bingo. Ditto. I was right there with you, while growing up. The first 10 seconds I ever heard Van Halen.... it was over. Game-changer. My life was changed forever. I went back and got the first few albums after that.... and all I did for a year was listen to Van Halen! Sure - other rock and roll too. But it was all about VH for me. Still is! Greatest Rock Band in history! Period. There will never be another Edward Van Halen. Never. And Al was / is unbelievable as well. I am sure you've already read Ted Templeman's book. But just in case.. if not... you gotta read it. It's amazing. Especially the Van Halen stuff. It's just absolutely insane to think about how the guys changed so many of our lives. We are so lucky.... to have what he gave us. Compare it to the garbage crap of today.... and all I can say is... Wow!
Very cool watching a drummer read music
