Having just found the original, and subsequently this, I can say with confidence the original is one of the greatest folks ballads ever.

This, to me, is the much cleaner, harmonious, diverse, more interesting version. The duet also adds a brand new layer of life to the lyrics. I feel like Songs: Ohia walked so the Morbster could run

This is just a fantastic cover... it not only pays homage to the original (which is wonderful, obviously), but it has a beauty of it's own with the duet performance of Morby and Crutchfield. They're both terrific vocalists/musicians and they really outdid themselves on this cover. Love it.

@@TrashBettyBoop The original is by Songs: Ohia on the album "The Magnolia Electric Co." released in 2003 (not to be confused with the band becoming renamed Magnolia Electric Company.) The singer and artist behind the song is Jason Molina, who passed away in 2013 from complications related to alcoholism.

I appreciate this cover but nobody can bring the magic Jason brought. It’s a palpable absence in every cover version of his music. I was in the other room when KZread auto suggested this tune and I heard Jason’ chords before his words. I will say that the lyrics stand out as exceptional when you hear the song by someone else. when listening to Jason sing it I’m so caught up in the way he emotes that the actual lyrics become secondary.

I spent a bit of time trying to find this cover to re-listen. Its a good try, but missed the mark. I think its because the whole thing is rushed. this cover becomes good-ish if you slow it down to 0.75x the speed

This is like covering a day in the life. You will never add anything, just don't do it.

Brings recognition to the song to people who otherwise wouldn't have heard it. It's a tribute to something great. Adds a lot actually. 👍

Singer songwriter Kevin Morby. Not Moby. But somewhat agree, this is a bit tepid compared to Jason's version.

To be fair they don't have the crippling alcoholism and mental health issues to drive it like he did. Its tepid but a nice tribute.

The whole place is dark Every light on this side of the town Suddenly it all went down Now we'll all be brothers of the fossil fire of the sun Now we will all be sisters of the fossil blood of the moon Someone must have set 'em up Now they'll be working in the cold grey rock Now they'll be working in the hot mill steam Now they'll be working in the concrete In the sirens and the silences now All the great set up hearts All at once start to beat After tonight if you don't want this to be A secret out of the past I will resurrect it, I'll have a good go at it I'll streak his blood across my beak And dust my feathers with his ash I can feel his ghost breathing down my back I will try and know whatever I try I will be gone but not forever I will try and know whatever I try I will be gone but not forever Real truth about it is No one gets it right Real truth about it is We're all supposed to try There ain't no end to the sands I've been trying to cross The real truth about it is My kind of life's no better off It's got the maps or if it's lost We will try and know whatever we try We will be gone but not forever Come on let's try and know whatever we try We will be gone but not forever The real truth about it is There ain't no end to the desert I'll cross I've really known it all along Mama here comes midnight With the dead moon in its jaws Must be the big star about to fall Mama here comes midnight With the dead moon in its jaws Must be the big star about to fall Mama here comes midnight With the dead moon in its jaws Must be the big star about to fall Long dark blues Will-o'-the-wisp Long dark blues The big star is falling Long dark blues Will-o'-the-wisp The big star is falling Long dark blues Through the static and distance Long dark blues A farewell transmission Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen Long dark blues Listen
