Ketchikan, Alaska, U.S.A. Alaska's first city

Ketchikan is a city of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough of Alaska. It is the state's southeasternmost major settlement. Ketchikan has the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, found throughout the city and at four major locations. Ketchikan has a mild maritime or oceanic climate, characterized by heavy cloud cover and high humidity through much of the year and abundant rainfall throughout the year (even in the driest month).

My Dad was stationed at the Coast Guard Base there in the 1950's & I and my sister & two brothers lived there as little kids! We loved it & hated to move away from there. We missed living there when the earthquakes hit, thankfully! We moved to crappy Texas in 1959! Hated that state & I still do!! Ketchikan was wonderful to explore in the woods & river & I was a 'pain' to the Game Warden for 'messing' with the Salmon when they were racing thru the shallows of Ketchikan Creek to get to their spawning ponds in the upper reaches. I learned QUICKLY to leave the wildlife alone as my Dad's BELT will tell you!!! The heavy rainfalls these days are TERRIBLY destructive to the hillsides & my Heart goes out to the Natives & locals who have to live with these Earth changes! I love Ya' Ketchikan!!!

In the 70S (my early teen years)I was running the "mean street's" of Ketchikan! Sneaking in to the Marine Bar's( totally nude) back door to watch the dancers from the men's bathroom, I would sneak into the movie theater, I would take boats for "joy rides" until my buddies and I got caught with the boat of the principle of Schoebar middle school(Markshuffle) thankfully I had baseball in the summer to keep me out of trouble! Then moved to the lower 48 and then back to Ketchikan for 12 more years (85 to 97) and believe it or not? I pretty much stayed out of trouble! I believe I need to get back to the 1st city and visit some old friends!👍✌❤🙏

Been there, did that back in the 80s. Was a little less commercial now most of the tourist places are owned flat out by tour ship companies, place is like a weird company town. Back then the big tour ships had to anchor out in the bay, could not come in to shore to dock like they do now the stink from the diesel must be horrific. The tourists back then were transported on smaller boats to shore. The real eyesore though is the rotting, falling apart, barely habitable housing stock in the Ketchikan neighborhood up on the hills, especially the junk built in the 1950s that is still standing and not a single owner put a penny in it to upgrade. Now housing prices have gone up everywhere, so naturally the AK greed has kicked in and minimum list price in mid 2022 is like $450k and up for non habitable dumps. Good luck with that, only a fool would pay that for a dump. And all that free spirit bs, forget about it, they have hefty property taxes like anywhere else.

@@dorene5313 they sometimes have condos for sale in the rotting, unsafe, probably bug infested 1960s high rises - the ones with no balconies, no amenities, on-line couple years ago they were around $150k for 980sq ft; occassionally they sell two that are opened up and combined into one larger condo but they go for more. Other than that if you are buying be prepared to start at around $450k for a fixer upper dump. Hope this helps and good luck. Best is to talk with a professsional realtor.
