I absolutely and totally agree! I revisit this particular recording very often and it doesn't ever fail to amaze me and give me goosebumps. The very reason I took up to study music...

Haitink and the RCO what an excellent pair. A great performance of a great symphony. Mahler would be proud.

One of my favorite - if not most favorite - recordings of this piece. The seconds before he lifts his hands to conduct are already part of the symphony...

This is much more inspired than his somewhat generalised studio account with RCO. The power yet simultaneously pureness of execution, rarely matched. In top three or four of recorded performances of second. Thank you Mr. Haitink for the music.

Although the studio recording is not bad at all either. The more I listen to the old Concertgebouw recordings by Haitink the more I appreciate them.

Prachtig. Wonderful. One of the best Mahler 2's that I've ever heard. So intense. A perfect work for a christmas matinee. I was too young (5) to see it on television, but now that I watch it here, as a Mahler- and Haitink-fan, I am deeply impressed.

I often wonder about the off-stage performers. Are they off stage for the entire symphony or do they discretely slip away from the main orchestra and slip back in again later? That's an aside. What a truly wonderful performance! I was actually in tears - I know this symphony extremely well and Haitink didn't disappoint. What a guy! 😀

it depends on a few things, actually. first off, for pieces like Mahler's 8th, where off stage parts are incorporated in the entirety of the piece, they just stay off stage. for pieces like pines of rome, the offstage trumpet soloist usually steps away during the start of the second movement, plays the solo and rejoins the orchestra. (and for the offstage trumpet, buccine and trombone parts for pines of rome, ive seen it done both ways, also) for pieces like mahler's second, ive seen it done both ways; it might be a budget thing, im not too sure. either the ensemble stays with the main orchestra until they need to play (at the start of the fifth movement), and they go to the balcony, or they just stay off stage until they are supposed to play. hope this helps!
