Great clip Gezza. I always loved this quote. “I pay the tax I am required to pay, not a penny more, not a penny less. If anybody in this country doesn’t minimize their tax, they want their heads read because, as a Government, I can tell you they’re not spending it that well that we should be donating extra.” - Kerry Packer

Whatever business Kerry Packer went into he made money on it. Sold the 9 network to Alan Bond for a billion dollars and then bought it back a couple of years later for $300 million. The guy had the golden touch.

I've just been watching "Howzat", the two part series about World Series Cricket, and it emerges that Packer was totally committed to the concept and the players, and still kept spending when it was clear he might lose the lot, and there was a very rocky road ahead. In the end, he made very good money from it, but that was never guarenteed. He backed a hunch, and could have lost a lot of money and his reputationn. Great admiration from me! Also, Lachy Hulme nails the Kerry Packer role!

Eddie : I believe that the attitude you talk about is actually harming this country. Many youngsters aspire to being tradies (nothing wrong with that) but often do so because being a doctor, lawyer, accountant or business owner is frowned upon by many. I am from a working class background but grew my own business up over 30 years and became quite well off. I have encountered this negative attitude towards successful people many, many times in Australia. Is it only coincidence that my Jaguar car gets far more scrapes and bumps in malls from supermarket trollies etc than my much bigger Holden did, when I had one?

Kerry Packer became Parkinson's boss in 1984 when he bought a controlling stake in TV-am, ITV's breakfast television service which launched on February 1st 1983 and without Packer's financial help, would have gone down the toilet as a financial disaster.

We don’t have wealthy business men, like Kerry Packer, in Australia any more. The wealthy one’s are to preoccupied serving different masters, pleasing different groups, and don’t have the flare, tenacity or power of Kerry Packer. Which is a bloody shame. We need someone who can give it back to politicians, when the politicians are getting too uppity. Look for the video of Mr Packer serving it up to a young Peter Costello. That’s how you deal with the politicians who have forgotten who they’re supposed to serve.

The sentiment of Parkinson here is utter bullshit. Australia is built on opportunity for those who come from well to do backgrounds. The wealth of Australia has been founded upon some luck, the Gold rush, but mainly through religious institutions and large landholdings from a bygone era. Even to this day Private educational institutions garner much higher finding than public. The private health care system is propped up through tax write offs and government funding. The mining boom has been underwritten by the public purse and less than 20% returned to the fundees. I could go on but very few in Australia, let alone the world, care about fairness and a 'realistic futire for all'. Most folk are super selfish and happy within their modern cave. Sniffing their own farts.

Ita you are also a fine example benefitting from his wisdom, you are moulding the ONLY Australian owned media with honour and a purpose that I admire as an Australian taxpayer....if my taxes could be solely directed to fund the ABC presentations of Australia's human voice, I am sure Kerry would be fully supportive and proud to counter the culture of demonisation that reaches over 80% of the world's population limiting news and its worthiness.🧐💭📡🛰🤐🔫
