Kephart VS. Nessmuk Knife | SUCCESS with Bow Drill Friction Fire
Join me for part 2 of this mini-series testing out 6 classic bushcraft knife designs. In this episode, I successfully start a fire using bow drill friction fire with my trick introduced in part 1. I use an LT Wright Genesis based heavily on the Kephart style knife and a Nordsmith Canteen knife based heavily on the Nessmuk style knife. Both are iconic names in the bushcraft community, so I thought it fitting to work with them simultaneously.

Any form of friction fire takes practice and building the proper technique. Removing one variable, like sourcing the proper material in the woods, will improve your chances of success exponentially. That's why specifically when you're learning the skill, it can be much easier to purchase a cedar plank, like I did, at your local hardware store. Once you understand what types of wood have a higher success rate and once you know how to locate dry enough material in the wilderness, then begin to transition to a more natural approach. At least, that's my mentality.

Both are L T Wright made and are among the best knives out there.
After playing with knives I've learned it's a skill and having the right tool for the right job. I would choose the nessmuk for versatility and as we saw it handles the feathering for fire making fine. And with skill you shouldn't have a problem getting a divot hole for bow drill..plus with that style we have a slicer also. So a win win..pair IT with with TBS wildcat for whittling and your set

A master can make even a cheap blade perform well vs. a novice making a high-end blade look like garbage. That Canteen Knife is great! The Kephart and the Nessmuk, my two favorite designs! I hold both the Genesis and Canteen in high regard. Not sure if I could pick one or the other either. Great video!

Neither is Nessmuk or Kephart. Nessmuk should be low scandi grind with handle closer to the middle of the knife and Kephart has to be full flat grind (slightly convex maybe) as intended by designer.
I like them both I own a Genesis and love it with the Scandi almost wish I had the full flat grind. What I really want is a Puukko. Nice video thanks.

I was actually surprised by how nice the Nordsmith is! It's so agile and comfortable to work with for its size.
French trade style knife is what i have been using for a few years now and I does everything I need it too.

That’s awesome! Once you find the one that works, stick with it! Did you see the last video in this series? I worked with a French Trade and a Bushtool.
Both knives originally would be flat ground. LT makes awesome knives.
Awesome knives, I canoot choose one over the other. That Nessmuk cleaver looks great. Nice bearing block too. I'll try to make one for myself. :D

My preference is the Kephart style. I own the BK62, a DIY condor kephart made from a blade blank and a BRK Kephart mini. The later is my goto knife for outdoors adventures. I also like Nessmuk style blades, here I own the Brisa Nesmuk and the QSP neckmuk.
I want a canteen soooo bad! I have loved it since I saw it.

I noticed you gave the kephart the advantage in woodcraft of a scandi. The only way to test them is grind for grind. Flat to flat, the original grind for those designs. Flat to me is the best grind for a companion blade as it is the most utilitarian, skinning, food prep, feathering, notching, batoning. Scandi is the best notcher but horrible at prep and tricky for feathering. Also the edge is more delicate for batoning. For my large blade a sabre grind beats all!!
Awesome video👏. I love both kephart and nessmuk style knives, hard to decide between the two. For me at least, the choice go down to handle shape and/or knife overall size or manufacturer.

I wouldn’t choose one over the other either. They’re so different and both so unique. I think it’ll mostly come down to what’s my activity of the day. The canteen seems like a great camp knife especially for cooking. The kephart is what I would grab when I’m doing a lot of carving and such. Thanks for the comment, my friend!
Nice looking bearing block! That's some beautiful wood. Since I'm a big scandi fan, out of those two I'd go with the Genesis. Plus, I'm an LT Wright fan. That being said, you can find Nessmuks with a scandi grind, so not sure which I'd prefer were that the case. I've been eying up a Joker Knives Nessmuk which has a scandi grind and curly birch handles, so maybe I'll be better able to judge in the future. 😁

I think it's bocote wood if I remember right. Scandi is usually my go-to for woods work, but lately, I'm seeing the benefit of sabers and convexes as well. I've never tried a Joker Knife before, but yeah, they do seem really high quality for the price. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@vegardervikolsen8926 not a huge difference, but the Joker is in 14C28N whereas the Brisa is in 12C27. The 14C28N is slightly better steel, but not by a huge amount. Both are perfectly good performers.

@@timbo4374 actually, I own a Brisa Nessmuk, and it is not in 12C27 but in 80CRV2 steel. So I would for sure choose Brisa over Joker
All that dead wood on the ground and you cut the tree?
I’ve really like the look of the Canteen… they just never seem to be in stock.
To me it looks nessmuk is better for chopping small branches and better for food prep while kephart does better when it comes to whittling and self defence. Both are great as you said specially the are both done by lt.
If lt wright made then they will Handel the task
