🇰🇪 Kenya's first Cannes-nominated film banned at home | Al Jazeera English

For the first time in the 71 years of the Cannes Film Festival, Kenya has an entry.
The film Rafiki, which means "friend" in Swahili, is a love story set in Nairobi.
It offers a different perspective on Africa, but the film has already been banned in Kenya and the director threatened with arrest.
Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela went to meet her.

As a Kenyan I fully support this woman and all the actresses of this film, Kenya is saying they dont want western idealogies yet we are ruled by a western democratic system, they worship their religion and white Jesus, almost everything in Kenya is influenced by the west so a lot of hypocrites just nit pick what they are uncomfortable with and say its western idealogies, its either they refuse all western idealogies or accept them whichever way they come as.. Africa is really backwards and with this kind of mentality where one thing makes people uncomfortable because it goes against a religion that was imposed to them just a century ago is lazy ignorance

We can't jump in this like technology, Africa is not ready for this. Build the continent, educate and do away with poverty first.

it's neither the talent nor quality of film-making causing Cannes to recognise these beautiful kenyan film-makers, there have been far better films from all across Africa over the years that Cannes could not give a godam about; but the interest in this flim is because it is about lesbians in Afrika and lgbt rights in Afrika; the subject matter of the hundreds other far better films ignored by Cannes over the years was issues that actually matter to Afrikans but don't mean a godam to Cannes.

The homosexual movement is very well financed. I'm sure the movie didn't get that far because it's good but because it's a lesbian movie made and banned in Africa

Killermonger and you need to go see a psychiatrist How does school teach that homosexuality is bad? You think religion is good? epecially christianity this same religion that murdered over 100 million people in history and was used to enslave africans and backed up by god?? You think that religion is good? Like Einstein said, Religion was created when the first conman met the first fool.
