Kenworth W990 vs W900 The battle of 2019

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So there's been a ton of talk about these two trucks and comparing these trucks. There's the undisputed champion. The king of the road. The W900. Then there's the new kid in town. Is this the new king of the road? Is this the new champion? We look at these trucks together and compare to see who the winner is....and you might be surprised at the answer.

It's obvious the guys that design and build trucks have never spent any time driving them in the real world. The '05 T6 studio I owned for 4 years would always ice up and the defroster cannot keep the windshield clear. Nonstick wipers would eventually need deiced...it was a lousy system. I'm glad I'm not out there anymore. Other than that...I loved working out of the many KW's I've had over the years. KW & Cat was a great combo....too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore.

It is really a matter of personal preference, as these two trucks are very similar in so many ways. 31 years in trucking, and my personal preference for most of those years has been the peterbilt 379 extended hood... but I'm considering the w990 as a potential candidate for a future purchase (1 to 2 years out)... unless I cave to wheelbase considerations and go with the t800 to fit more sleeper onto the same wheelbase as the w990 with less sleeper. As I age, I find that my "viewpoint" leans more toward practicality than "cool factor". Rough riding trucks have contributed to my spinal troubles... Noisy cabs have stolen some of my hearing... And I notice more these days in little things... like how useful it is to be able to look down at your steer tire when the maneuvering gets truly "tight", or how much more comfortable I am standing up right from my seat rather than walking "hunched over" into the sleeper. I've always considered the w900L a pretty even match to the 379 extended hood (I just always found the seating of the 379 more comfortable to me personally)... But, IF certain deals come together in the next year or two... And, IF I am buying trucks... They will either be the w990 (meaning that I decided to trade some sleeper space for the the forward axle)... or the t800 (meaning that I decided that the sleeper space was worth the setback axle, and a less comfortable transition from the driver's seat to the sleeper). The choice will also depend partly on which options are on the table for the different sleeper configurations (such as windows where I want them, etc.)

I ordered a near duplicate in 1982 (last year for the "A" model and the Buzzin Dozen in KW's and my last truck).... Sure miss the ("real") trucks, and wishing now that I had kept each of them.... especially with what I'm seeing people paying for them!!..... would definitely enhance my retirement funds! : ) I completely agree with you... when I hit the sleeper, it's lights out, but unlike a lot of these "steering wheel holders" of today... when they're sleeping all night, I'm motoring... and on into sometime the next day.... It's a common practice with Kenworth to use the same cab and sleeper with different models. They have different hoods and what not. It's just like how the W900 and T800 are of course the W900 has been around before the T800, but it's still the same thing. Different hood, same cab/sleeper with a different front axle placement. The best line is at the end, when he announces the winner: "The winner is you." Different trucks, and a world of different drivers. Looks like Kenworth respects those who love and have made the W9 what it is - the best of the world's best. They're still building it. You don't "move up" to the 990, you move sideways. More room (except that short studio!), better vis, quieter cab. Might appeal more to younger drivers, maybe not. At least there's a choice. Fenders, headlights, grill - the differences are big and obvious. Damn, I just can't get past the "raw" beauty of the W900.

The 520 may have the "luxury" look with the nex design in the cab as a vocational rig. But I always will choose the 320. I love that truck. I remember seeing them on all the trash trucks and now the 520 is swiping the industry. Every person knows that the newer trucks lack that "classic truck" feeling. As a truck a fanatic, I miss the old days when the doors were made of the metal and not plastic like cars. Bring back the good old days! 😭😭 Miss pete 320 era tbh. Same with those classic Pete 359s or Freightliner century or w900L. Beautiful rigs.

I can understand the classic love. In the same sense, I'm assuming that you also drive a newer car because of some of the creature comforts that it offers also.

I know I'm just a touch late, but I gotta say, as someone about to start classes for my CDL, I'd have to edge towards the W900. There's just something about that classic aesthetic, both inside and out, that just really speaks to me.

I love my W990. Haven't been home since I first got in the saddle. I really like how quiet it is. During any down time what makes this truck comfortable is the desk area. Flip the amazing seat around, swing the table out and you got a work area similar to home and it's just as comfortable as goin down the road.

I AM - "Old School" - never even touched a "single stick" box until I started driving for someone else in 1996, after having been an OO since 1972 and my last two (had three) were Ext. hood "A" model KW's with V12 Detroits (which I built to marine specs) with Dbl Over 6X4 Spicers and 60" flat tops. My first KW I bought new in 1976 and my last one, I bought new in 1982 (last year of the "A" model & last year of the V12 in KW's).... sure wish I had kept either or both of them, now.... and my first one as well, which was a 1969 359 Ext. hood Pete, also with a V12 but NA (Naturally Aspirated) and with Spicer single Over 5X4 which I bought just slightly used (only had 28,300+ miles on it) from a friend of my dads who had a heart attack just 4 months after he bought it, and had to park it and retire. I bought it after I returned from Nam the last time for $10,000. Actually wish I had kept all three, especially knowing what their "getting" for them now.... Yikes!! As for these new trucks... including the modern day KW 900.... you can have them All.... I'll take my old "A" model extended hoods any day, complete with the V12's I built and a good set of "sticks" behind it.... FAR beyond the comprehension of today's "steering wheel holder" wannabe "truckers".... especially those I see climbing out of the cabs of trucks pulling reefers. dry-vans and some flatbeds.... it's Really sad and Embarrassing to see the type of people that "trucking", especially in those types of carriers are attracting these days. There is no more respect and very little to No camaraderie anymore between drivers like we use to have, either.... it's really going down the toilet in many ways.... just as the country as a whole, is. Sad, but very true. Historically, ALL great civilizations have come to an end, one way or another.... and this country's time is just about "up"... Sadly! One thing that this country has in common with all the other great civilizations of the past just before they "disappeared" from power.... Mass & Gross Corruption throughout government!!
