    Hey Josh, Just tried and succeeded in wirelessly connecting my new D75 to an ancient (think Windows 8.1) HP tablet with 2GB running Winlink. It was flawless. Thx for succinct instructions on the menu structure. It is also not lost on my spouse that I'm using an expensive HT to connect to a 2nd hand tablet from 10 years ago! My field runs & POTA will now be wireless thanks to Bluetooth & you.

    I honestly don't understand how they make money on these ridiculously expensive handhelds. Even if you use something like my ft70d, you're only pushing 300, maybe 350 bucks for a full-fat APRS and winlink setup with a digirig and a cheap android phone. Or, just grab a raspberry pi, which plenty of folks have floating around, and you have a complete VHF/UHF packet radio setup, all for less than _half_ the cost of this radio. Like, it's nice that this radio has a tnc built in. It's nice that it has 222MHz. But it's not "spend an extra $400-500" nice.

    @@b4ux1t3-tech do you really need this explained to you? Hobbie is full of retired white dudes, some of which have plenty of money. This radio is also attractive to a young tech buyers who come from the IPhone age where we don’t want a bunch of stuff cobbled together to send a text message. World is full of tons of people that are not like you. First radio that has a small screen with a map and AIS messaging like I can get on my motorcycle with nothing but an antenna, I’ll buy at any price. Something small. Doesn’t need to be 5 watts either for digital. A single cable off unit amp for mobile would be sweet. I can already do it with Mesh/lora and my phone….

    @@Qwiv don't get me wrong, I know that there are folks with plenty of money in the hobby. But regardless of how much money you have, I don't see the value add here. Like you said, if it was literally "does the whole shebang in one package, applications included", I would actually say that's very worth the price of admission here. But... It doesn't. Haha. It takes the place of equipment that is _much_ cheaper. Not a little bit cheaper. _Half the price_ cheaper. That's what I mean.

    For what it's worth, the D75 battery life is slightly better than the 74 but you need to break it in. (charge to full, discharge to empty, rinse repeat) I've found that with my D75, I get 7-9 hours of APRS/Packet/D* a day.

It shows bluetooth has connected on the D75. But no TX. Edit: Finally uninstalled both COM devices, reset the radio, uninstalled/reinstalled Winlink. Basically, I went nuclear and reset EVERYTHING. It finally started working. What a finicky setup. haha

    SSTV over Winlink lol The battery on the D75 is 20mah larger than the D74, which really means that it is essentially the same. And battery life doesn't seem to have improved over the D74, sadly. I beaconed APRS for about an hour yesterday and it ran my battery down pretty quickly. After watching this, I think I will try to setup Winlink at the hotel in Orlando this weekend. It'll be fun to do it over RF with the Ed Fong antenna.

  • @AlGordon

    @AlGordon

    Battery life seems to improve significantly if you condition the battery by letting it drain to the point that the HT shuts itself off due to low battery, then recharging to full, about 5-6 times. After that, turning off all the bells and whistles while they’re not actively in use also helps. Bluetooth, excessive APRS beaconing, backlight timing seem to be the juice-thirsty culprits. Another thing to be aware of is that the battery remaining indicator might not be super accurate, and seems to go into the red quicker than it probably should. I believe that this has already been reported to Kenwood.

  • @HamRadio2

    @@AlGordon turning off bells and whistles is how you kept the battery up longer on the D74 also. The point I was making is that it hasn't improved from the last model. I'll try the draining idea.

  • @AlGordon

    @AlGordon

    @@HamRadio2 yeah, regardless of the model, less power draw leads to longer battery life. :) Don Arnold has had his D75 a week or so longer than most of us, and has been (I believe) keeping track of the battery performance from fresh out of the box, and as he’s been conditioning the battery. He shared on a D75 FB group the information about the battery actually lasting longer after conditioning. I don’t have numbers, but I’m assuming he’ll share some with us at some point soon if he hasn’t already. For what it’s worth, my D75 battery (after conditioning) seems to be doing better than my D74 ever did. I’m testing with one band on D-STAR and the other beaconing every 5 minutes on APRS, but haven’t been keeping track of time before the battery dies. Might be interesting to start keeping track.

  • @AlGordon

    @AlGordon

    5 ай бұрын

    As a quick follow-up to this: I caught Don on 30C this morning and got some numbers from him. He's getting around 8 hours after breaking the battery in, running APRS beaconing every 5 minutes at 5W, and the other VFO doing D-STAR or analog voice. Closer to 10 hours if he configures for less aggressive power draw.
