Kenwood NX-800H - 2 Days of Morning School Bus Radio Chatter with FleetSync

Well, I haven't uploaded some school bus chatter in a long time, so I thought I would. These are videos I recorded back in December, but I've waited until now to upload them.
This whole thing was recorded over a span of two days. The first day was recorded over a span of about 30 minutes, but I only pulled about 3 minutes of transmissions from the video, so I recorded for a second day and got a few more. Please note, these clips have been shortened to mostly chatter, so many of the transmissions are happening much faster in this video that they actually did.
As always, I'm monitoring all my good friends over at the Carol Stream yard on 463.2625 MHz. The system you are listening to is a conventional UHF repeater system with Kenwood radios utilizing both a 074 DPL tone and pointless FleetSync PTT ID signalling. The bus radios are Kenwood TK-8150, TK-8180H, and NX-800H units putting out 45 watts of transmit power. I believe the dispatch radios are NX-800H units as well, and the shop uses some kind of Kenwood portables.
The FleetSync radio ID numbers are pointless across the company, as whoever programmed them didn't actually take the time to program all the radios with a different ID, so a good majority of the radios share the same ID, causing selective call alerts all over the place. Still, there are many at this yard that do have their own ID.
For reference, the TK-8150 units have ID numbers beginning in 100. The TK-8180H units begin in 108, and the NX-800H units begin in 109, 110, and 111. All three types of radios on the fleet also have their own "popular ID" that is shared among a good majority of them. 1001225 is the common TK-8150 ID, 1081028 is the common TK-8180H ID, and 1104456 is the shared ID among the NX-800H units. When my radio screen says "Shared ID", it's a 1104456 ID.
This radio, which has been in my collection for almost a year now, is a former company radio that was thrown out last year. The ID on this one is 1112099, and I have kept it that way even after reprogramming.

    Nice video. It amazes me how much "chatter" there is on transit communications. It's almost never ending. I live very close to Philadelphia in New Jersey and the activity on the bus channels is crazy. Thanks for the video!

    You're very welcome, and thank you! Like I said, this video is just all the chatter squished together. Both days of this video were about 30 minutes long. A good majority of those 30 minute videos were silence. In total, that's about an hour of recording, with only 10 minutes of transmissions. Trust me, there's days when this frequency has so much communication, I think my radio is going to explode, and other days, it's silent. And when it's silent, it means everything is going smoothly with the bus company!

    How did you tap into those channels? I'm looking at getting a Kenwood TK8180H-K for my next car but this seems very complex?

    Can you explain to me how the range on these radios is like that of a cell phone, but when it comes to walkie talkies you get about 1-5 miles.

  • @msj191961

    @msj191961

    It really depends on several things. These radios have much more power than your bubble pack walkie talkies. These use an external antenna (which will give you better range the higher up you have it). Atmospheric conditions and objects blocking the signal will also play a role in the range. Everyone's setup will vary, but with my indoor setup, I can usually get a signal down to a repeater about 40 miles away. As far as what you hear in this video, these bus radios are feeding into a repeater, which has a tall tower and can get signals out for miles and miles and miles. So these radios aren't running radio to radio, but radio to repeater to radio. A repeater makes distant signals from all over a given area come out of one tall antenna tower.

    Nice video! I have watched a few of these videos, are you able to do some city/route bus coms? If you do, can I use it for a personal project, for a game called OMSI, which is a bus simulator, I will be using it for the a UHF in a bus (If you know your buses, its the Mercedes Benz O307) Thanks :) and keep the videos up!

    Thanks for the positive feedback! Unfortunately, I don't really have good access to city bus communications. I live about 45 minutes from Chicago, so I can pickup scratchy communications there with a good antenna, but not as good as this. I found the UHF frequencies for the Chicago Transit Authority buses. I'll monitor those frequencies with my scanner over the next few days. If I hear anything that's good enough to record, I'll do that and send it to you.

    This is a radio transceiver, or two-way radio. It can be used as a scanner (that's what I'm using it as in this video), but it also lets you talk to the other person.
