Kenwood KA-4010 stereo amplifier repairs

This amplifier survived being thrown into a skip with great force and now needs some mostly mechanical repairs. It also gets a green phono input!

The Kenwood xx10 series of 1989 was one of their best. Almost all of the components were very well-built and lasted a long time. The KX-9010 was the best Cassette Deck in its price range back then and the KX-5010 was probably the best 2-head deck ever made. My KX-3010 lasted for over 20 years without any necessary repairs or maintenance. Too bad people just throw stuff away like that.

Good Job! Another piece of equipment saved from an horrible end. My Aiwa XA-007 has also both tone defeat and source direct buttons. I don't know if in your Kenwood is the same, but in my Aiwa the tone defeat button only bypass the Bass and Treble controls. Instead, the Source Direct button bypass all the control knobs and switches (balance, loudness, etc), having the shortest possible lenght in the signal path. And in this second case the improvment in audio quality is very audible. Keep up the good work.

Only use contact cleaners specifically designed for electronics. I use Kontakt Chemie Tuner 600. Never use "household alternatives" such as WD40. Some may say those work, but in reality they don't work for long. Either they leave a residue on the contacts that even more dirt can stick to, or they corrode the contacts. Either way, they will make the problem even worse.

The later or higher-in-the-range KA 5020 model I have is a different beast inside, as far as controls and switches are concerned. The Input Selector has become very vague through use in the time I've had it, with problems in selecting both channels and also 'extends' past the marked points of choice at either extreme. Instead of a rotary selector inside, it has a strange 'ribbon-like' set-up that drives the switching mechanism to select the channels. Apart from a little jiggling of said input selector, it works well enough and is an excellent piece of stereo hardware.

ive got a ka5020, had it a number of years, its in use every day as the pc is connected to it, so far all that has ever gone wrong with it was a scratchy input selector, easy fix. had a marantz pm44se before that, the kenwood is far better, as the marantz i found bass light in comparison. some of these older kenwood amps are probably better than people think they are.
