    Secretariat's Triple Crown performance was the best feat of athleticism I ever witnessed live on TV, especially his run at the Belmont. Eddie Arcaro, who rode Citation and Whirlaway to Triple Crown victory, was asked if Secretariat was the greatest race horse he ever saw. He answered, "I won't say if he was the greatest, but I will say this: there is no horse, living or dead, who could have beaten Secretariat that day" (at the Belmont). Amen!

    Willie Shoemaker, who rode just about every Champion from the 50's through the 90's, said that Spectacular Bid was the best horse to lay foot on a racetrack and if you start doing the math...it is hard to disagree. For example, if you compare the Bid to Secretariat on any and all levels. He was just a faster, superior horse than Secretariat. His World Record for classic distance is 9 lengths better. And he did that with more weight and eased up..No way would Secretariat ever beat Spectacular Bid.

    I think secretariats performance in the PREAKNESS is his greatest race ever, he was made for the Belmont, big long race on a big track, he was also well built for the derby being a big powerful horse able to bully horses out of his way BUT THE PREAKNESS with the short track and tight turns is another matter entirely which is why turcotte goes thru hell and high-water to get him to the lead on the first turn. I can't ever recall seeing a horse pass so many horses on a turn like he did.. if any other horse would have done what secretariat in that first turn he would have been spent and lost by fifteen lengths...unreal

    I think Preakness is the best, too. The way he just kicks on the afterburner and passes all the other horses like they’re nailed to the ground. When he suddenly appears in the camera range and Chic Anderson said “Secretariat has made a sudden move and is now 6th!…He’s on the outside, looking for the lead, and it’s right now he’s looking for it…Secretariat is in the center of the racetrack and driving…” It gets me every time. What made Secretariat so special? The horse never slowed down, and accelerated at every furlough until the end, evident by this video; so very good jockey too that knew how to race the horse. The second place horse is Sham at the Derby and close at Preakness. A great horse, but Shams folks talked smack after the Preakness- how they knew to beat Secretariat by pacing together the whole race for the Belmont. Everyone thought Secretariat came out too strong but Sham got tired around the 3rd turn and Secretariat won by over 30 lengths 1/16 mile plus hahaha. They turned him loose and let him run and never lost pace but increased without a whip...classic butt kicking.

    Citation had the greatest 3 year old season of all the triple crown winners with 19 wins in 20 starts. At he end of his 3 year old season he had an overall record of 27 wins and 2 second place finishes in 29 starts. Early in his 3 year old season he beat older horse Armed, 1947 Horse of the Year. Citation's overall record is a little muddy since he got hurt late in his 3 year old season, missed his entire 4 year old season, and only came back at 5 only because his owner wanted him to become the first horse to win $1M in purses (which he did). He wasn't quite the same horse after his injury. In 45 career starts, he finished no worse than 3rd in 44 races. I'm not saying he was better than Secretariat but his 3 year old campaign stands above all others.

    I think Secretariat is the best race horse of all time... however, you can never tell just based upon different results the finish time horses would have in a theoretical champions race. Horses like people are motivated and pushed by competition. Every horse is different. You not only have to consider that horses historical highs but the competition that they faced. My own opinion is that Big Red would win a champions race the same way he did the Belmont. If not for Big Red, Sham may have been more successful. And sham was pushing him for about 1/3rd of the race. I would be interested in an analysis of win/place/show statistics for the field that each horse faced.

    Your video shows Turcotte going to the whip on Secretariat. He never would have because he never had to. Big Red knew when it was time to hit the gas and run down the opposition. He didn't have to be told or urged.

    They should’ve just done it with all their actual race times to show just how much faster secretariat was than citation and pharaoh. The reality was much more impressive, and that’s not even considering he wasn’t being pushed that hard. For example, the actual derby times were (ignore the stupid blue links): Secretariat 1:59.4 American pharaoh: 2:03.02 Citation: 2:02.4 (wet) But in the video they’re all within half a second of each other. Secretariat ran the fastest derby of all time. Affirmed had the second fastest derby time for a triple crown winner (12th place overall all-time fastest derby) with a 2:01.2, 1.8s slower than secretariat. To convert that to lengths at around 38mph, Secretariat would be roughly 8.5 lengths ahead of Affirmed, and 18 or so lengths ahead of American Pharaoh. And one more thing: based on actual times, Sham would’ve come in an easy second in this race.

    I saw that horse. He would’ve won by more, even over those horses. The only one I saw that was near his quality was the Bid. He was a monster. By the way, Red wasn’t a middle of the pack horse. He either hammered from behind near the stretch or hammered to the lead and held it.

  • @wmg5852

    Secretariat was the best I've ever seen. Yeah, he basically won by the 2 methods you said. It was amazing how no horse, certainly no 3-year-old, ever raced against the clock like he did. When he raced, he was expected to not just win, but break the track record. I would add Dr. Fager along with the Bid at #2. The Doctor was a monster. Of course neither could have touched Sec. at the longer distances.

  • @pocobull

    @pocobull

    @@wmg5852 not a criticism of Dr. Fager at all, as I agree with your assessment. When DF set his 1 mile world record, he was a 4 year old, which is arguably the best year any horse has. Secretariat only ever ran two races at a mile, and both races were races that Dr. Fager ran in, so it's a useful comparison, because they were run at the same track. The races were the Champagne and the Gotham. Both horses ran a 1:35:00 in the Champagne, but Secretariat went a full 2 seconds faster in the Gotham (1:33:2 to 1:35:2). If Secretariat had have ran as a four year old, and had been entered in a mile race, he almost certainly would have shattered DF's record.

    Whomever wrote this software is not a racing fan. Going 5-8 wide in the turn adds at least 30 feet to your travel distance. Grade 1 horses understand & don't do that, it automatically takes you out of contention. This looks like a stampede not a race. It's great someone thought to do this, but horses don't race like this except in movies.

    If Man o War had bothered to run the Derby he'd be the unquestioned GOAT even with the comparative recency bias of Secretariat. And the other horses would have a chance if Man o War ran with a handicapped weight. If running with equal weight, the other horses wouldn't catch Man O War even if they were somehow were riding in a Lamborghini.

So yall are trying to tell me that Affirmed would have beaten Seattle Slew by 15 lengths since he ran the Belmont 3 seconds faster than Seattle Slew? Apparently the faster horse doesn't mean shit head to head. Slew smashed his ass twice and it wasn't close. The faster horse Easy Goer beat the crap out of Sunday Silence in the Belmont but lost 4 lost of 6 to Sunday Silence. Time time time though right. Long as they good on the stopwatch they unbeatable huh..🙄
