Kentucky basketball loses IN THE FIRST ROUND to Oakland and everyone is sad | Rapid Reactions

Спорт

During the Kentucky Wildcats’ opening round game of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, the 14-seed Oakland Golden Grizzlies officially began its Cinderella run following an 80-76 win over 3-seed Kentucky.
Senior guard Jack Gohlke was unconscious against the ‘Cats, raining down 10 three-pointers (one shy of tying the NCAA Tournament record) en route to 32 points. Antonio Reeves countered with 27 points of his own for UK, but a more confident Oakland team flexed its way to the program’s biggest upset in school history.
The Golden Grizzlies went 15-31 from deep. Reed Sheppard finished with just three points on 1-5 shooting for Kentucky. Oakland’s bench finished with 19 more points than the ‘Cats. Tre Mitchell chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.

If a head coach at Louisville, Tennessee or Indiana said that the NBA draft was the greatest day in their program's history, their goal was to get 8 players drafted not to win the title after a final four loss and that if they won the title in a year where nobody got drafted they would consider that year to be a failure, the UK fanbase would be united in mocking said coach for years. When somebody shows you who they are, believe them. This team was never built for March, they were built for June. Because that's all Cal will ever care about.

Thanks for saying this. As a Louisville fan, I’m so sick of getting constant shit from Kentucky fans. I don’t even fight it anymore because I’m so tired of delusional fans thinking they’ve got it better. I feel bad for the state of BOTH our programs. I miss the days where the trash talk was warranted. Now neither program has any bragging rights and it’s totally sad.

I’ve been a Cats fan for over 40 years and this is heart breaking. As far as I’m concerned the basketball season is over bc I really don’t care bc my cats are home getting ready for the draft. Just because you run a zone doesn't mean it's easier to make adjustments. A zone defense can be just as effective and potent--if you run it right--as a man-to-man defense. Not saying Cal shouldn't have been able to adjust, just saying good zone defenses can be wicked.

The pressure of not only being 18 years old but a Kentucky legacy was clearly too much for him. I don't think anybody could have anticipated it based on how he played all season, but Cal should have seen it and had him on the bench down the stretch. He killed them with the rushed shot and terrible turnover in the last 2 minutes. It's not unprecedented. Brandon Miller was great for Alabama as a freshman last season and then was terrible in the tournament.

Calipari's biggest problems are he refuses to change with the style of play of todays game hes a good 10 years behind with the dribble drive crap. He will not make in game adjustments when things are not working such as playing a zone which always screws our offense when its threw at us. To be able to run a man to man type defense the team has to be good defensively individually in which they clearly was not. His teams cannot run efficiently in a half court set only can run well on fast break type looks. It proves that he has grown complancent and is more concerned about the name on the back instead of the name on the front of the jersey. Its all about recruiting and getting the one and dones to the league instead of really buckling down and being an actual X's and O's coach and teach our guys how to fix the problems that have been apparent all year. Just wish Cal would get the hunger and fire back he once had when things was rolling right for us earlier in his tenure here at Kentucky. Truly hope things can get back on track next season or its time to move on and make a coaching replacement sooner rather than later.

Fact is there was NOTHING special about this team. It was just all hype because of the name on the front of the jersey and what that meant 20 or 30 years ago.

People were so used to Cal's rock fight approach to games that they thought "Hey! Something different!". It led to them neglecting to notice the fact that it was still a lot of business as usual under Cal: losses that shouldn't be happening to teams they absolutely shouldn't be losing to, Cal being inexplicably stubborn about some aspect of the team (i.e. the starting lineup), and ZERO improvement in some area they're lacking in....like defense.

No team, especially a John Calipari team, has ever gone on a run when the point guard and the coach aren’t on the same page. When you buy the "Built for March" snake oil (1) You give the coach a pass losing a lot of games between now and then (i.e., You learn to be "ok" with 10 loss seasons)., (2) You've built nothing to win consistently in the present, and (3) By March, with no proof that you can win 6-in-a-row, you're gonna lose -- unless you're just lucky (i.e., The Emperor hasn''t had clothes from the beginning, but the coach only has to face real heat once a year when fans realize the joke's been on them from Day #1.). Then, when the dust clears, the coach starts selling snake oil all over again. Nice work (8.6mil/year) if you can get it.
