That concept of merihara is very interesting. I needed someone like Kensuke Sonomura, one of the most innovative fight choreographers in the world, to dissect it properly for me to fully appreciate it. I never realized it was something as subtle as maintaining the final pose at the end of the move rather than chambering up towards the beginning that primarily separates stereotypical American from contemporary Japanese martial movement.

Very interesting interview Eric! I love how you don't let languages stop you from interviewing. I can't wait to watch your interview with Mars!

I was hoping there'll be a bit about One Percenter too, but it was a really awesome interview nevertheless. I recently watched Bad City and apart from martial arts choreography being high level I also enjoyed watching Hitoshi Ozawa, who's still at the top of his game after many years in the business. I'd love to see more interviews about the newer Japanese action cinema actually as I'm mostly focused on older movies (I'm going chronologically through every Japanese film with eng subs [official or otherwise] starting from 1948, and I'm currently at 1957), so I have a serious lack of knowledge about recent history of this country's movies. Maybe talking with Yuji Shimomura would be a good idea if that's possible (idk about Tak Sakaguchi given the unresolved accusations against him).

21:26 i really feel this description of difference between japanese and Chinese language. i already know Japanese and l am currently studying mandarin. while I'm sure there's a large part where I'm very accustomed to the cadence of Japanese sentences and need to get more accustomed to the cadence of mandarin sentences and learn more words, with Japanese i can def feel the "angular" description, at the moment mandarin feels like more of a continuous flow.
