Larry Tatum is the real deal, all the techniques are meaningful like I learned in the 80s and 90s. I was at a seminar with Jeff Speakman who said that Parker trained four of his top students in, Tatum might have been one of them, before he died to raise concerns that there were too many instructors teaching flashy techniques chasing speed, which are impressive in demonstrations but almost meaningless. Unfortunately the internet is full of that, so having this comprehensive video from an authentic Kenpo instructor is priceless.

I love Mr. Tatum when he strikes or even you feel his weight transfer and moves the opponent. Chuck Sullivan said when Ed parker moved the whole floor moved each block each strike had that power, that connection to ground, checking of height, width and depth and subtle unbalancing due to that which keeps doesn't give opponents any opportunities to attack back

Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu work under pressure because they train under pressure against an unpredictable stimulus. Aikido and Kenpo only use Ukes that's why you won't find any footage of Aikido or Kenpo working against a trained fighter. Rick may as well be a bob dummy.

^^^^ This guy gets it. All the predictions of "this makes him do X" is way off base. A resisting opponent, an untrained opponent or someone who is high (for example) isn't going to react in a predictable manner.

Tatum is the utmost best in Kenpo the speed, power, and precision he shows in the techniques are unbelievable! I wish they had the names and modifications of the rest of the videos in this one, they are pretty cool and would give the student/practitioner a better idea of what and why of the techniques. I think it would be a great idea if Tatum and Speakman 5.0 got together and put their ideas into a better Kenpo system for the world to see.

I love kenpo. Ive done Martial arts for 23 years and one of my favorites as in fun to train was parker kenpo. With that said it is completely dillusional as an actual fighting system. When I started I came from almost 4 years of Soo do thai karate, Machado BJJ and Muay thai. Before that I had done koei kan karate on and off for 13 years, Mcmap( marine corps martial arts program, as a Marine, 4 years of kuk sool won as a teenager and 6 months of Isshinryu. So my statement is fact not opinion. When they spar where actual fighting techniques are needed all this coolness goes out the window and they look like 7 year olds in a tae kwon do school. Thats not to say there are not some in the system that can fight there is always the few but over 90% of any kenpo guy i have yet to witness being anygood. I left and decided to go to Krav maga. Which I love. NOBODY is complacent in a fight and good luck making a neck chop work without getting your teeth knocked out of you head. No disrespect as its a beautiful system but dillusion comes heavy with this one also with some of the others I have trained but this is the worst.

you miss the point you arnt supposed to use the moves exactly, as they teach concepts. its the ideal phase. YOU are supposed to be taught and make your own what if scenarios you can combine parts of moves together or remove bits. Kenpo is all about adaptation. Plus you should probably learn some boxing and muay thai and if you're feeling daring some jiu jitsu to help with striking and ground game

American Kenpo from the Ed Parker School and it's Variants is the Ultimate in terms of the theoretical study of Self-Defense: It's a great addition to other Karate Systems: SHOTOKAN, GOJU-RYU, SHITO-RYU, UECHI-RYU, WADO-RYU, Tae Kwon Do and even Chinese Systems. Engineers become creative engineers for their theoretical study of physics and advanced mathematics, So is this metaphor is applied to the study of theoretical American Kenpo. KARATE is DEADLY: One poke to the eye or a strike to a vital spot can end a fight and it's ONE KILL STRIKE in the OKINAWAN / JAPANESE Philosophy of survival can save your life when you have to use it for survival on the street. On the street - situational awareness is very important when in a deadly confrontation for survival = use anything and every weapon you can find.

There's something about Kenpo that doesn't jive with me. It's difficult to say.. something about the movements. It' as if somebody sprinkled a little "Hollywood" into the moves. Maybe it's something like pro wrestling, where there are moves that are theatrical but would still be powerful if they connected. But I've never taken Kenpo so I can't say I disapprove. I'd have to take some classes to make a real decision. I do like their idea of multiple strikes.

For the guy who made a negative remark without understanding the process that students have to be taught. after years of training and many repititons learning goes from the ideal phase when you start than the what if and then to spontaneous where the student learns to simply move from technique to technique being able to graft movements together while operating on a totally sub conscious level simply reacting and changing as needed. For someone who does not understand this , they do not understand how self defense techniques are taught so that your reactions become spontaneous . for the guy that did not put his name with his criticism, self defense technique is designed for the most part to work against a committed street attack, not for a professional ring fighter attacking you. Sparring teaches you to work against trained opponents. The ultimate self defense is to go from a sparring scenerio to self defense scenerio.

Kenpo just really isn't meant for sport. It is just too savage, especially when Mr. Tatum does it. Kenpo is sort of like if you threw a guy into a spinning airplane propeller. You can't really dumb it down to be less for sportsmanship rules. It wouldn't be even be Kenpo at that point. I never liked Aikido as demo'ed for women at "Take Back the Night" and agree with you. In those demos the victim woman would do some thing to hurl the guy to the ground at run away into the night. Now the guy gets up and knows that she knows some self defense and come back much more brutal. She should have left him blind, deaf, throat punched, balls ripped, solar plexus smashed, etc.

As a matter of fact there's actually more high level MMA fighters with karate/kenpo backgrounds than most people think there are because even if you can't do these specific techniques under stress, the basics of defensive maneuvering, economy of motion, balance disruption, and blitzing and striking from weird angles are all huge advantages that you subconsciously "learn" from these training methods.

Okay, here is the stuff point of this and all Arts is self defense. You are not a UFC fighter you don’t stand toe to toe. You want to get away with your life quick succession of strikes and then evacuate. Kenpo contains Jiu Jitsu Parker was a 3 td dan. He was also a street fighter as were almost all practicing MA guys from the Kempo Lineage Parker Emperado Bro’s. And the list goes on. As far as a Jiu Jitsu System and rolling. That’s all good until Shimabakuru stabs you in the kidney and you die. Like the Emperados learned. As far as Kibap or Krav Maga - IT IS KEMPO EVEN THE NAME IN HEBREW MEANS “FIST FIGHT. “ It started as Boxing combined with Judo in WW2, but the technical aspects are Kenpo America. How do I know? The modern operator was a guy from ISRAEL IN MY CLASS.

Its amazing that he is fast enough to do umpteen hundred techniques to his opponents one. How ridiculous. So much unnecessary movement. I mean, if this stuff was for real all the mma fighters would be training it. There is no way this guys interpretation of defending against holds and shoots would work against aggressive, athletic fighters. Anybody who has spent time on the mat knows this.

This is a waste of all the achievement by the late GM Ed Parker and impart his technique to this guy Mr Larry Tatum and he is not even famaos lke Chuck Norris ? None of his current students hve bring up American kenpo in the Martial arts world today and to the movies. Some things need to be done ! Guys please response to mr Parker's techniques.

This is nothing like JKD. This is all predetermined moves performed on compliant training partners. There is absolutely nothing in this video that remotely resembles a resisting, aggressive attacker. This is as laughable as tai chi.

Absolutely unrealistic defence training method, real opponent does not stand like a doll after the first blocked/ parryed attack. Even if suppose , that first counter was succesfull, opponent will not always be struck down and can resist in the most cases.

@@user-uq1fw2eb8p so ignorant. In my very first lesson in this art, the teacher said "you'll see online people say stupid things like, your opponent won't just stand there and let you run through 6 strikes." Well, duh. That's like saying to a boxer "the punching bag won't just stand there and let you hit it." It's like telling a basketball player, "your opponent won't just let you stand there and shoot a three." These strikes are all designed as natural movements of the body that you could use in various settings. The techniques teach the body how to move through numerous strikes as required. If the opponent reacts unexpectedly, you have other techniques that you naturally transition to.

@@trevanhatch8717 the problem I see that sensei in this video clearly positions these techniques as ready real working things. Ok , if suppose, that that this is nothing more than a preparatory exercise, even in this case mindless waste of time do it on unresistable opponent. If i see how training in judo , traditional jiu jitsu , I have no questions about how realistic in real self defense they are. This is what I can’t say looking at kenpo karate. Perhaps i dont know, in some dojos training more realistic , considering those things that i said about.
