Mel wrote this song about a neighbor that live by him in Florida. He talks about it in an interview. Kenny Rodger started as a Rock Band with a big hit called "Just walked in to see what condition my condition was in".. This song Ruby came out right after I returned from the Vietnam War. It was my 1st tour out of three!!

This song is about a veteran who is paralyzed from combat in Vietnam. His wife leaves him laying in his bed while she got us out and shares her affections with others than him. He knows that his injuries are going to kill him shortly and he just wants her to stay with him until then. That's why the last lyric is for god sakes turn around. She's breaking a broken man's heart.

Actually it was written by Mel Tillis. He says it was written about a veteran of the Second World War.

That song is a masterpiece especially when Kenny Rogers and the first Edition play it, a really catchy tune that you don't get bored of, the singing, the instrumentation, awesome!!!! Your female friend there seems a bit tone deaf, or maybe she's not really a music person, there are people out there that like music, but they're not crazy about music like us 😂

It says in the song that he didn’t start that old crazy Asian war but he was proud to go and do his patriotic sure; he and Ruby were obviously boyfriend and girlfriend before the war but he came back paralyzed and the ones in the needs of a woman her age and he tells her Ruby I realize; but he also tells her that he won’t be long because he’s heard that he won’t be around he’s going to pass away and he just wants Ruby to stay with him until he dies Ruby is going out at night to find other men to fill her wants and needs! This sadly happened to a lot of men who came home disabled from Vietnam!

@@hhhgfcvjk7999 Yes, I know that, but the song was on the radio in the Vietnam War. "Ruby" was first recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1966. Johnny Darrell reached number nine on the country charts with the song in 1967,[1] and Kenny Rogers and The First Edition released it in 1969.

Search for and enjoy the songwriter, Mel Tillis, performing it solo with acoustic guitar on the Porter Wagoner show in 1967. Kenny Rogers did a most famous cover as shown here. But to paraphrase a famous movie saying, "We don't need no stinkin' bandzes!" 🙂

(a Canadian Singer/Songwrite). As fate would have it, I married a Canadian in the mid 70's and lived in Toronto for several years. My husband was very fond of Gordon Lightfoot's music. Being exposed to it on a daily basis, I soon realized that I actually, very much enjoyed his music. To this day he is still one of my favorite musicians. I enjoyed your reaction videos.

Finally...very few reactions to this song... . A line in the song about a "crazy Asian war" and the time of the song's release led to the assumption the song was about a veteran of the Vietnam War-though this was never stated in the lyrics-although Tillis stated that the song was about a veteran of World War II.[3]

The song would ring more true if you lived during the Vietnam war. Back then as you grew up in high school you learned of people a year or two older than you that graduated and got killed or maimed in an unpopular war. Each year there was a lottery based on birthdays that helped decide who would have to go to war. The scale of the war meant everyone knew a least a few people that were drafted and sent to the war. I have gone to the Vietnam War memorial in Washington D.C. and have seen the names of buddies that were killed. Did you know that you can fire a 50 cal from a helicopter and cut a running man in half and the bottom half can keep running for 10 yards? I don't know what memories you have of your senior trip. I wish I could forget mine.

I realize that stopping a song is the nature of the beast of reaction channels, but when you stop it, make sure to have something to say worthy of the stoppage. If one must mansplain, at least have a mansplain where the audience might learn something. You are so enthusiastic to make sure she understands the song, your disruptions make it more difficult for her to understand the song.

Music has ALWAYS been a big part of my life. You stopped it waaaaaay too much.I know you really love the song so do I . i was 13 when it came out ,it played on radio constantly. I understood it at 13, she understood it too, it's just so dark that he has thoughts of killing her cause he feels so abandoned as many disabled vets sadly were.. But he married the wrong girl or maybe just a too young immature girl.. The whole thing is sad & He's dying to boot but ...no one should rely on another for their happiness... That's not right or healthy for anyone.

I detest this song. The character of the song lost all my sympathy as soon as he said he would like to get his gun and murder her. Sorry, we don't dole out the death penalty just because someone is having an affair. It will mostly be men who say "Aw, heck it's just locker room talk." Yeah.
