Can't blame Kenny for leaving. Imagine the toll of Hillsborough, the funerals, the grief, the absolute horror of knowing so many fans died. The pressure would affect anyone. I cried my eyes out when he resigned as a young 8 year old. Love our Kenny to bits.

Liverpool should have appointed John Toshack. But they had messed him about previously and he said no. Twice in fact. Toshack with his European experience would have been ideal. And I’m sure Liverpool would have won the league at least twice over the following 10 years with him in charge. But Souness seemed like a certainty. Liverpool should refrain in the future from hiring former midfield European Cup winning captains from Glasgow Rangers. The last time they did that it sparked a 30 year tittle drought. Think on John Henry.

The one positive of the decline is moments like Istanbul, the Owen final, the Gerrard final and Madrid felt much more special than if we were winning everything all the time.

I remember it well - he'd looked increasingly stressed over the previous couple of years, and there was a siege mentality by this stage. Defensive vulnerabilities were exposed following Mark Lawrenson's enforced early retirement and two cruel defeats including Michael Thomas's last minute goal to seal Arsenal's championship victory in 1989 and Crystal Palace's 4-3 win in the FA Cup semifinal the following season piled the pressure on his shoulders. By this stage he looked like an isolated figure with the worries of the world on his shoulders which is never sustainable. Little did we know what this meant for the club. Let us pray we don't lose our way again like that. No doubt the board will be planning a replacement for Jurgen when the time comes... YNWA

@@benphilips9918 You make some good points Ben. The loss of Mark Lawrenson was a shattering blow to the club. Remmembered as one of the finest central defenders the club have ever had, and one of the finest in the game, he was also equally at home playing right back, left back and central midfield. He didnt just fill in, in those positions, he was outstanding. Alan Hansen was approaching the end of his career, and having injury problems, so addressing central defence should have been a priority. I remmember reading about a journalist describing how a press conference had been called at Anfield, and everyone assumed that the club were about to announce the signing of Gary Pallister from Middlesborough, who it had been speculated they were after. They were shocked to discover it was Ian Rush. As much as we were delighted to have Rushie back, did we really need strenghtening in attack at that point? We had Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo, Pallister would have sorted those defensive vunerabilities.

@@DavidSmith-fs5qj yep...and when l look at this now....The one mistake kenny made in his first stint as liverpool's manager was not replacing lawrenson when he was forced to retire...We should've signed gary pallister....

I remember Michael Parkinson slagging off Kenny saying pressure was not being a football manager but being unemployed or trying to feed your family. People clearly didn’t appreciate the toll that Hillsborough took on him

It wasnt just being a football manager, in the aftermath of Hillsborough, the players, led by Kenny, attended all of the funerals of those who lost their lives in the tragedy, amny of them attending four funerals a day. I remmember reading about how Kennys wife Marina, was on the phone one night speaking to one of the bereaved for someting like 3 hours. I ahave just finished reading Stevie Nichols autobiography(5 league titles and a packet of crisps), and he reveals how the same pressures affected himself, with mental health issues very much to the fore these days, we can understand the just how much the toll from that tragedy took on Kenny, the players and all those connected with the club.

Hillsborough had alot to do with King Kenny giving it away.

It had everything to do with it. Detailed in his autobiography.

Should have given him a years sabbatical and let Roy Evan's , Moran and backroom staff run the team for a year or two. Would have come back signed petrescu keown s.pearce le saux, ince McAllister overmars cantona and shearer. N.martyn in goal . Plus macca and Fowler. Souness got rid of McMahon Beardsley Staunton way to soon and signed duds at inflated prices.

He signed two of the players you’ve listed for Blackburn and that was a complete rebuild. So history suggests you are wrong. They offered him a break. He said no. Listen to the fucking article.

Those players you mention would have cost too much money. Liverpool could have signed 1 or 2 but that's it. Overmars was only emerging at the Ajax academy so highly doubtful if anybody could have signed him from abroad back then Kam.

@@Smudgeroon74 Daglish was so good with transfers. McMahon, Spackman Aldridge, Stauton, Venison, Aldridge, Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton all signed in his first 3 years. Almost all of them are legends. Souness on the other hand got it mostly wrong.
