Kenneth Anderson Diaries: The Black Panther of Sivanipalli

In this adventure, am following up on the story which took place in 1934 where kenneth followed and shot a Black Panther, melanistic colour variant of the leopard, near the village of Shivanahalli (sivanipalli in tamil). It was quite an adventure for him in trying to trace this panther amidst dense scrub jungle. I tried to retrace his steps to find out the places the incident took place. One good thing to note is a lot of forests are still there for one to see and enjoy. Sit tight and join the adventure :)

Well done and thanks for showing us the wonderful landscapes from the places mentioned in Mr. Anderson's books. Trophy hunting was big back then, and no doubt Anderson took part in it being very much a product of his times. In his later books though, you can see the change of heart slowly taking place when he realized what was going on and sounded the alarm.

Great work, Shreyas. To add to your narration- in 2007 or so a couple of friends and I went to Sivanipalli. There we met a man who must have been 80 years old or more. This old gentleman said he recollected a white "dorai" and his son would come over to hunt or simply camp long ago- when he was a young boy .. We showed him a photo of Kenneth Anderson and this gentleman recognised him. The son was Donald whom we met when he-Don- was alive. Please keep up the good work... And just a word of caution... There are elephants in these parts and please watch out for anything like dung and also with the locals...And your music that you play is good too..

As always a pleasure to watch your videos and seeing the places that we have imagined from the description in the books! I was wondering if there are other authors or books you could recommend in the genre - beyond Corbett and Anderson. This genre continues to fascinate but apart from "the lonely tiger", I did not find many books to read.

You can check out the "The Last white hunter", which shares some of the adventures by the son of Kenneth Anderson, Donald, and also shows light on how things changed in Bangalore from his childhood to his older days. It's on my to read list as well.

The degradation of forests have taken heavy toll all over the india and increasing human population craving for more cultivated lands and civilization and so western ghats are no exception..as what Kenneth mentioned and other big game hunters authors mentioned in their books of lush vegetation and abundance of wildlife disappointingly at it's end. As they were all small hamlets that time now they are villages and towns.

Yeah well.. I have no idea why they insist on calling it a black panther. At the end of the day it’s a melanistic leopard. But then i get it .. Almost all Cat species are called Panther or are part of the genus Panthera scientifically. So a Leopard is Panthera Pardus, A tiger is Panthera Tigris , Lion is Panthera Leo, Jaguar a Panthera Onca and so on.... So i suppose calling it a black panther is not that far from the reality.. 😅
