    Interesting! To me, the religious imagery, dressing as the pope, sitting at the last supper, was essentially seeing yourself as someone to be worshipped.

    I think when it comes to Humble, people have to take into account the time it was released and the succession of it after To Pimp a Butterfly. You guys start to get to it when you see that it is the Kendricks and J Coles who are the most successful, who compared to the 'trap' and Soundcloud rappers have, in reality, the most money and fame. This song was to show that on a prominent 'trap' producer's beat, Mike Will Made It, Kendrick can do what these trap rappers can do but with better substance. Consequently, it went number 1, his first solo number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Couple that with criticism that To Pimp a Butterfly wasn't commercially viable enough to the masses, he released this single that not only suited the times, but did it better as a 'conscious rapper', and it is his most successful song to date. It's just a 'fuck you' to his critiques and those within the industry who tried to discredit Kendrick's star power in the music industry. I think that's why Damn is so important, it may not be a classic but he needed to put this album out to show the world he is the best rapper of his generation, with a catalogue to prove he can appeal to the hip-hop community (GKMC), the music critics (TPAB), but also the wider musical community (Damn, with singles such as Loyalty and DNA)

  • @fernandoreyes680

    @fernandoreyes680

    5 жыл бұрын

    I would say TPAB appeals more to the hip hop community than GKMC. Not only because amazing lyricism on TPAB that impresses every hip hop fan, but also because of the production. Most hip hop fans would enjoy jazz samples more than trap samples.

  • @MalakAhmed867

    @MalakAhmed867

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@fernandoreyes680 Don't get me wrong, I love both albums but my personal scope and seeing the reaction of both albums at the time amongst the community and friends as well, GKMC blew up as this staple hip-hop album, with some incredible storytelling and production that appealed to the community. He went from Dr Dre's protege to a formidable force in the rap game after the release of the album. I think with TPAB, the jazz-influence alienated some hip-hop listeners, even though hip-hop has always sampled and been heavily influenced by the genre. And the lack of what people deem as conventional 'bangers' on TPAB averted some of the community as well, in comparison to the amount on GKMC. 'Bangers' in terms of replay value, and also GKMC had that familiarity in terms of flow and beats due to the heavy West Coast sound it had. That's why I think it appeals to the wider hip-hop fan base more. And the experimental outlook that TPAB has appeals to the music critics more, and if you look at hip-hop albums in the past 10 years that are deemed experimental hip-hop, critics tend to rate them higher, thus leading to the idea that he's got an album appealing to the critics, with universal acclaim. But of course, just an opinion

  • @robinvolpi

    @robinvolpi

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@fernandoreyes680 AbsolUuuutely, TPAB was lauded more as a hip.hop classic than was DAMN, which was also met with critical acclaim. There's a segment of The Community who may have felt otherwise.... A younger, more ignorant (forgive me) crowd who most likely have a higher appreciation for mumble and less substantive rap.

    The question you asked around 10:30 is actually the basis of a big topic within hip hop culture/amongst fans and artists alike...its essentially the divide between old and young, new school vs old school. its a relevant and prominent debate in the music at the moment...you guys are slowly becoming hiphop heads lol! You're going past just simply listening and enjoying and are delving into the nuances and narratives and discussions concerning the music. Its a pretty cool process to watch as a life-long rap fan..i love seeing people who werent hip to the music get in tune and understand why and how hip hop is more than what its been (negatively) portrayed to be pretty much since its inception. Its come very far over the past 2 decades and has been far more accepted than ever, but its still an uphill battle. We need more guys like you two to help break that wall down. Keep up the good work guys!!

    One thing you have to remember about Kendrick is that, while alot of his songs work alone, the real magic happens when you listen to a whole album of his at a time. They all have a red thread, and therefore, songs like Humble gets a different meaning, when you out in the context of the entire album :)

    You guys have podcast voices (not sure if that’s a thing haha) but I really think that podcasts are great ways to discuss and have genuine and intellectual conversations to open minds for others. You basically do that from these great reaction videos but even podcasts with random topics and conversations would be amazing plus you already have a decent number of followers to kick it off. Anyway, this is just a thought, stay blessed guys!
